I plan on losing 20 pounds this quarter. Anyone else with me?

Post your starting weight and a pic (if you want.) We can try to keep each other on track.

Starting weight 210 on 1/4. Goal: 190 by 4/1.

Oh what the hell :). Only hours after I posted that I want to avoid dated goals, I'll join this challenge! It seems reasonable, and it will bring me to my big mid-term goals of 200 lbs. Sometimes dated goals and challenges are just to fun to pass up :).

This morning the new scale said 220 lbs so I'll use that as my starting weight. The goal is to reach 200 lbs by April. Here is my starting pic:

http://arker.homelinux.org/~dcraven/trans/front_Jan_01_2006.jpg

Ignore the curvy spine. It's from a back injury that I'm getting over and will be gone by April :).

Cheers and good luck,
Heavy

Awesome! Thanks for joining me HG. We have 13 weeks counting this one, so that's about 1.5 pounds per week. We can do it!:D

Given that we have a defined time limit, how about we make it a bit more interesting:

We all check-in once a week with stats/pictures, winner for the week (say, biggest decrease in bodyfat % or fat pounds) gets bragging rights for that week. The winner must defend his title and others try to take the title away the following week.

Aside from weight, I'll not be taking any other measurements or pictures more often than the beginning of each month. The reason for this, is I find that weekly is too short of a time span to show any real progress. When I look at a picture of myself today compared to a picture of myself a week ago I find the lack of change psychologically demotivating, and get frustrated. Measurement changes are too small as well. The changes in waistline for example that occur over a week's time are small and can just as easily be attributed to inconsistant measurements. I think you'll also find the same problem with weekly body fat measurments. A month is a perfect time frame to be able to judge progress though in my experience. Several months is even better!

This may be different for others, but it is not a good idea for me for these reasons. I do weigh myself every morning though, so I could happily report weekly changes in that aspect if we decide to do so.

Cheers,
Heavy

Welcome Dusho!

All right, so far we've got:

Travis at 210, going for 190.
Dusho at 218, going for 198.
HGuy at 220, going for 200.

Cool.

I'll post weekly weigh in #'s, but I'll probably wait until the end for a pic.:tu:

Nice summary Travis. Ok so we'll make it just based on weight, a weekly measurement of what the scale says (given this challenge is "lose 20 lbs in 1st quarter.") What day/time of the week should we make our weigh-in? I'm open to any day.

And we've got three people in the challenge. Anyone else wanna partake in a friendly rivalry? Cmonnnn, chickens!! :bb:

Welcome senimoni! We're rooting for you pic or not.

As for the weigh ins, I think I'll probably usually go with my Sunday morning weight, but I think you can do it whenever is convenient. The main thing is to lose 1.5 lbs per week to reach 20 lbs by April 1st. Weighing in and posting the number will help us to keep on track, and give us something to cheer for each other about.

This is so unnatural for me to not procrastinate until the last minute about something... you simply cannot do that with weight loss.

Dusho

Awesome, welcome aboard senimoni. No pics required, just consistent weigh-ins, on Sundays? We can then keep track of everyone's progress.

Not in my case because I got so much stronger during the loss of the first 20, I'm like a fat burning furnace right about now. I'm gonna lose these 20 in 13 weeks vs. 20 weeks for the 1st 20.

This challenge has a pretty reasonable goal unless you are already quite lean I'd say. We should all be able to pull this off without problems, that's what I like about it. Especially when it's immediately following the holidays where we all like to eat a little more than we should :). I've already lost ~3lbs!

It's kind of a drag that I can't do my lifting due to a back injury though and I hope that doesn't hinder my progress. I can already feel my muscles shrivelling up... Maybe that would account for my loss so far :(

Cheers,
Heavy

Same. I must go through a ton of beans per week between chili and chicken soup etc that I make here. Everything has mucho beans. Good source of fiber and protien both. And very good tasting too! I think my supermarket started purchasing twice as many units of beans and cottage cheese per week just to keep up with the increase in demand since I started my transformation :).

I've dropped another pound already making 4 in total now. I'm starting to get a little concerned. It feels weird to say this, but I hope it tapers off soon :).

Travis don't worry bro, the weight could just be due to food, that, well, hasn't made it's exit yet.

On a bad note, I succumbed today to a minibun brought in by a co-worker. :( Now *that* will make your weight loss go the wrong way.

HeavyGuy
Fri, January 6th, 2006, 07:50 PM
No worries. Neither the chili or the minibun put you over your daily intake all that much probably. This stuff is more of a psychological setback then anything else. Put it behind you and move on. If any weight is gained then it's likely just water. Whee!

All in all, I'm pretty happy with how I did this week. Didn't eat perfectly clean, but I ate fairly well....probably an 8 out of 10 in terms of cleanness. I've been trying to get up early in the morning to take my dog out for a nice long walk. Only succeeded once, due to staying up too late. That needs to get fixed. Got in some decent cardio sessions, which improved the way I felt and positively affected my week :)

My first week went suprisingly well for not being able to train. I weigh 216lbs which is a loss of 4 lbs as of this morning. It seems the loss spurt has ended as I get rid of the last lingering water from the holiday binges. I've levelled off at 216lbs for the last 3 days, so I think that's it. Back to the more slow, painful loss rate :).

Great to see others also had a good week! Let's make it two in a row!

:nope: I have decided that I am too much of a cheapskate to buy a new wardrobe going in the wrong direction, so....

Count me in too! I have been going for the last week, (250-->242!!!) but I had so much salt the day before the 250 that I'm sure 3 lbs of that was water weight!

So I am going to use today's mark of 242lbs as my start for this challenge, rather than my Jan 1 weight.

I am at 23% (ish) bodyfat, but I am not very good at measuring this yet, so this is a very "ish" number.

Going to hit freeweights :bb: for the first time in 3 years tomorrow, hopefully I don't overdo it, or underdo it for that matter.

This challenge should be a good middle range goal for me, on my way to my long range goal of 199 lbs and 12% BF June 1st. Although I just did the math and figured out that I will actually have to be -30lbs on April 1 to be on track for 199 on June 1, so I think I will be going for -20on my way to -30 on April Fools Day.

(BTW, total noob on JSF, so hello to everyone!;) )

Welcome to the board and to this challenge Jay! Are you measuring your BF% with calipers or a scale? And how tall are you? I'm assuming you must be pretty tall to be at 12% when you reach 199lbs.

Good luck to you, and hopefully you can achieve similar progress over the next week as you did the last. Stick with these forums for information, and motivation and you'll reach you're golden :).

Welcome to the board and to this challenge Jay! Are you measuring your BF% with calipers or a scale? And how tall are you? I'm assuming you must be pretty tall to be at 12% when you reach 199lbs.

I'm 6' 1" and the BF% is with a calipers.

I have a strange feeling. Most of today, even though it's been time to eat (every 3 hours), I haven't really been hungry. I've almost had to remind myself to eat. Could this be, being full? This is great. :tu:

I just had some chopped up lean steak burger in lentil soup over some brown rice, with a whole wheat pita bread on the side and a large bottle of water. Mmmm, mmmm,, goooooood!! (mouth watering)

You know, it's funny. I had that exact same "problem" on Sunday. I was just NOT hungry all day long. It was the strangest feeling. It was like damn, do I really have to eat again.. I'm not even hungry. But if that's a sign of burning fat. I'll take forcing myself to eat any day

ROTFLMAO about the designer soap, to think that you could probably find a buyer for it.

I'll try this :D. Don't think I can do this though because I'm losing weight at a relativley slow rate at the moment. But hopefully i lose 20 pounds of fat and gain like 10 -15 pounds of lean muscle mass in place of that so making it 5-10 pound different which is still good to me :D. as long as fat goes away :P

I had some venison snack sticks (kinda like jerky) Sunday evening so I though that might have been holding some water back.

I don't anticipate or want to lose 1.5 lbs per day!!!!:nono:

We are all doing incredibly well! Holy... 24+lbs already, nice!

I'm not sure what's been going on with me this past week, but the weight just seems to be coming off faster than normal. Maybe the bad Christmas holidays did me more good than bad. I've been losing as though I just started making changes again (6lbs now since challenge began). I'm not really complaining, but it seems unusual. I'm sure it will level off any time though, and will be offset with a nice plateau. Those are always fun :).

Nice work everyone, and welcome aboard Farm!

I did the same thing on Tuesday when my doc told me that I need to get surgery....went out and got a burger and fries (though I skipped the soda and got water, yay for small victories) from a local joint. Got back on track yesterday and today. Small setbacks aren't what keep you from succeeding, it's LOTS of small setbacks. Don't give up! :)

Don't let cheats get you down! They will only derail you if you let them! Resist the urge to think that you have failed at your goals, as you haven't. Put it behind you and move on. Aside from a possibly a little water weight, a bad meal won't set you back if you put it out of your mind. The problem comes when you let yourself get into the mindset of "Well I just had a burger and fries, so the day is blown. I might as well have a pail of ice cream tonight.". It's too easy to convince yourself of that even though I know you know better.

Forget about it and focus on your goals! :tu:

rapp, it's a great feeling when your pants start to get loose and bunch up under the belt! Of late, I've noticed my rear end start to lose size more quickly than before. I'm either soon gonna have to buy new jeans or sew more belt loops on the ones I have so that they don't bunch up and fall from behind the belt so much :)

The week's not over yet folks, let's get back at it!

Oh well, movin on!

Re: pants loosening up, yeah it's cool but you have to buy new pants! I was a tight 38, 23 weeks ago. Now my 36's are bunching up, but they're kinda tight in the thighs. Changing the shape of your body requires way too much shopping!

Does having a handful of cashews (outside my planned meals) constitute falling off the wagon?

My diet has been going great and I'm very focussed at the moment. Like HeavyGuy said, it's best not to dwell on the "mistakes" - as long as we keep the longterm goals in mind we don't need to give up after a simple bit of over-indulgance. So you might put a bit of water weight on, so what?

Keep up the great work!

Hey guys and gals...everyone falls off the wagon, or even CHOOSE to deviate from clean eating.

My first transformation I vowed NOT to EVER cheat....and it drove me MAD at times. I'd be out with friends at dinner and they'd be having a drink or eating something "Not BFL approved" and I was sitting there with my brown rice, chicken, and water. At times I felt like I was in prison. When I was finished the 15 weeks, it was almost like,"Whew...I'm done, I made it, now I can eat some of the other crap again." And before I knew it....I had replaced all the hard earned habits I learned on clean eating.

This time around, I'm approaching it differently. And in my opinion this is a PRIME example. I weighed 183.5 on Monday.....Tuesday morning was 182 (woohoo).....played basketball with some friends Tuesday night and then went to wings....I had probably 8 wings and two beers...you know what???!!! It tasted GREAT!!!!! Woke up the next morning for cardio jumped on the scale....182.5. Only 1/2 pound! I was psyched, but still hit cardio and lifted in the evening. Feeling great...turned in Wednesday night. Woke up Thursday morning, hop on the scale hoping for 182 or 181.5. But to my dismay, 183.5!!!!!

I was LIVID....I worked my butt off Wednesday, ate clean and still put 1pound back on. But rather than feel guilty about that cheat meal, I got mad about it! Would I do it again....perhaps...but more than likely not because now I KNOW how I'll be affected. And I DON'T like seeing the scale go up!

Thanks for letting me rant. I'll get down now....push my box aside, and go get my protein shake!

Keep your chins up, and crank up the cardio....today's a new day and a few pounds lighter.

Oh, by the way....everytime I thought about slowing down or stopping in cardio last night. I envisioned those wings and the 1.5 lbs it essentially added. Needless to say it was one of my best cardio's ever.

182 this morning.
Jon

This why weighing yourself daily is a bad, bad thing :nono:

Speaking of weighing yourself, my wife and I decided to only weigh ourselves on Friday morning since Saturday can easily involve cheats.

At least I didn't gain weight yet. I haven't quite hit my training stride yet this month, but I've been holding my ground and improving my strength and conditioning. My main problem re: weight loss has been diet so far. My problem was eating/drinking too much... I guess we all had that weakness at one point or another to end up in this challenge. I'll shoot for a clean week this week, with a big cheat day Friday (my buddy is coming to town and lots of beer will be involved.) I've been MIA. Didn't work out last week save playing tennis and my eating ranged from semi starvation (not purposely) to binge eating on girl scout cookies and the like. Strange though I'm down to 161.....Honestly I don't get it. When I eat clean my weight barely moves, then I cheat and I drop 2-3 lbs...this has been happening since Thanksgiving.

Anyhoo I'm back. Today I did Back and got in my 45 mins of cardio ...almost got kicked out of the gym but I had to hit my target :-) People are finally noticing the weight loss...and some pants that were tiggggght I can pull down with out unzipping.

Welcome Irishlad, of course you can join! It looks like you're doing well so far!

Yeah, I'm not doing so good this week... I've been planning this week for a long time though. So I knew I might stay the same or gain a pound or 2. It is just a big excuse to have a cheat week I guess, but an old drinking buddy of mine will be in town this afternoon and wants to hit some bars.
(He said "Take me to bars where I can get stabbed," we've got plenty of those...:D ) So I've been drinking alot of beer all week so I'll be in "top form," and not black out or something after a few beers, like I did a few weeks back at Senor Frogs. That was in the middle of a long stretch of clean eating etc... and I really couldn't hold my liquor. I don't want that pain again so I've ramped it (the drinking) up all week. Next week I promise the pounds will start to come off again when I clean it up.

Friday morning weighin: 289. Down one pound for the week. Didn't really have a very good week at all with the clean eating. Probably only 3 out of 4 meals were "clean", though none of the non-clean meals were all the particularly dirty.

Welcome aboard newcomers!

I'm only down one pound so far this week, which is more in line with what I expected. The previous two weeks were, as I said, flukes. It's okay though because I'm back lifting! One or two pounds a week for the rest of the challenge will get me to the goal, so I'm cool with that :).

Hey ladies and gents,

I didn't quite get started the way I wanted to the first week I signed up (had a friend in town), but last week was awesome. Ate very clean and had some great workouts. I'm down a pound, weighing in at 176.

Like many of you, this particular challenge is part of a longer journey--one that originally had me weighing in at about 208 in Oct. 04. I'm determined to get over this last weight battle to really be fit for spring and beyond.

Good job everyone!

My Friday morning weigh in: 288.

To be honest, this week I wasn't good. But I wasn't bad, either. I was totally dreading this morning, since I was feeling down about not eating as clean as I should. Also, yesterday was one of those days that I felt fat, which didn't help.

I still dropped a little bit, so that was heartening. At my weight, my maintenance cals are so high that I can still eat lots of food. Plus, after my week where I lost the water weight, I'm going to need to get used to slower progress anyway.

Good luck to all you Sunday weighing in guys and gals :tu:

It has been a really bad week for me . I woke up Monday not feeling well , by Mon. night i had a fever of 102 and had not eaten anything all day. Tuesday morning had a fever of 104.6 , so off to the hospital i went .......... turns out I have strep throat and double ear infections. So I did not do any cardio or workout this week , had nothing to eat Monday , only 3 bowls of chicken soup Tuesday , and maby 4 bowls chicken noodle soup Wed. Got some good foods into me yeaterday and today , but my head is killing me to much to do and cardio or any workouts........So it looks like next week im going to hae to step it up a notch to get back on track
Hope everyone else is oing good this week

Are any of you guys using protein powders in your efforts to lose weight? If so, what kind and how much??

I've been using Webber Natural's whey powder to keep my daily protein levels up to around 40%. I buy it at Costco. I typically have a shake before lifting at breakfast time, and a shake immediatley after lifting. I don't look at whey powder as a weight loss supplement or any kind of "supplement" at all, rather just food. I find it more difficult (and expensive) to get as much protein as my plan requires without it while not going over my target calorie or fat levels.

It's more of a convenience/money saver than anything I'd say. Not necessary if you get enough protein in your normal diet in my opinion.

Heavy

No change for me this week. 259 again. I'm really surprised I didn't go up at all. I had a really bad week with not keeping to my exercise routine and wasn't eating very well. I got back on track yesterday though. Congrats to Chambers for being the first one past the 20 off mark.

I am up a pound to 193 this week but that is not that bad coming off of my sickness last week. Got a new home gym on Friday so hopefully I can get really serious about my workouts now. Congrats to Chambers for losing 20, hopefully the rest of us will be there soon.

I guess we all pretty much chowed down last night... I know I did!

crackers w/peanut sauce dip
foccacia bread w/olive oil dip
roasted beets w/ goat cheese
chicken satays
Beef Tenderloin
potatoes, fried
sauteed spinach
creme brulee
cafe latte
3 Heinekens
3 Jello shooters
1 Rum and coke

Four slives of cheese bread from Wegmans.
Sauteed sliced potato w/ onion.
Seared NY Strip with red wine sauce.
Chocalate raspberry ganach cake.
1 glass red wine.

As far as a cheat meal goes, I don't think it's all THAT bad. But man was it delicious.....and wifey was appreciative of me for fixing it for her :madpimp:

Luckily, tonight is ping pong night for me, which is more cardio than most people would think :)

Hello to all,

Been very busy with school, it's almost the end of the quarter, so I haven't posted in a while. I have been keeping up pretty well though, 229 this past Sunday.

I have also decided to run a half Marathon at the end of April, so hopefully by April 1 I will be able to finish 10 miles w/o stopping or walking. Shooting for 1:45:00 to finish, right at 8 minute mile pace for the race, so we'll see how that goes.

Good progress everybody, and keep it up. (Especially you Chambers!!:claplow: )

This week's weigh-in sees me at 206.8 :)

Consistent good eating is the key for me. The last 21 days have been absolutely clean as far as my nutrition is concerned and I haven't missed a workout all year... I have one of those bodies that doesn't take kindly to even the slightest variation in diet and this has now been proven over the past three weeks with consistent losses each week.

Everyone else seems to be doing okay. We've still go a few weeks left and I am certainly making a concerted effort to reach this mini-goal by april 1.

Cheers

I'm in big trouble this week. The Valentines dinner, then the power went out last night so we had to go out- so another restaurant meal, now a big catered party tonite! (At which I am expected to at least drink and eat my bodyweight by the hosts) I'm a little nervous about my numbers. I'll be lucky if I'm no higher than my starting weight!

I had a better week than the last one, that's for sure. I ended up dropping another three pounds down to a solid 204 lbs.

I hope some others had good weeks as well! And I hope Travis behaved himself last night .

Guh... I made it down as far as 201 lbs last week, then I shot back up to 204 lbs for some odd reason. No change in diet except I have been slacking a bit in the water departement. Most of the water I've been drinking has been strained through a tea bag first, so there may be caffiene/retention issues. I'll ease off and we'll see what happens this week :)

279!

Under 280 for the first time in a year and a half!!!! Sweet! I know I have a LONG way to go yet, but getting below 280 is a HUGE milestone for me on a personal level. I have been around 280 or higher for the last 7 years, which I'm sure has taken a huge toll on my heart. There were two stints where I got below (255 in 2002; 212 in 2003), but for the most part, 280 has been a benchmark for my weight. I'm so happy to be below it and can't wait to get to the next benchmark of 250!

I'll be back down to under 200lbs for next week's update, but for now I'm sitting at 202 lbs. I'm going to need to come up with some new goals as now that the big one is over, the rest seem uninteresting :)

Off to put in some road miles on the bike. It's near 75 and clear right now, gotta love the south in March....

:tucool: Can't argue with that, although I'll still take fall in the upper Midwest over any other season anywhere else in the world.:D But that's just because I'm a sucker for a cool, crisp fall morning with a little frost on the leaves, walking through the beautiful colors, preferably with a shotgun so I can get some dinner of ruffed grouse. Tastes 10x better than chicken, especially with some yellow corn grits and wild rice...
