View Full Version : Question on Carbs
Saydene Thu, December 29th, 2005, 03:54 AM I've heard from serveral sources debating on the topic of not eatting after a certain time or not eatting carbs past a certain time. They say you put on more weight. My question is, is this true? Will not eatting after a certain time or not consuming carbs after a certain time add on less weight.
CASD Thu, December 29th, 2005, 08:23 AM Lots a variables... depends on age...health issues ..etc..,
I'm 48 and do not have a thyroid so I fight to keep my metabolic rate high but on top of that my body processes food more slowly..I'm insulin resistant ..etc.,,
So I don't eat after 6pm and I eat my largest Low-GI food meal at breakfast.. so when I hit 6pm it's a low volume low-GI meal with high protein(prefer a semi to slow bruning protein like Nitrean from ALN)
Someone in good health...young...probably could fudge on this alot...:)

this is not true, with the exception of people like CASD that have extenuating circumstances… think about this, the reason we try to eat every three hours or so is to keep our metabolism running the whole day… but then you will be sleeping for 8 hours… 8 hours that your body will be working… it does a lot while we’re sleeping, a lot of your muscle recovery happens overnight, so you need to feed it so that it can do that… my last meal is around 10 p.m., right before I go to bed and I make absolutely sure that I have a good, clean, carb in my system along with a good protein and usually a veggie too… a good carb for before bedtime would be oatmeal, cottage cheese (which also has good protein), or a whole wheat tortilla, good protein would be egg whites, tuna, chicken, etc… and I usually throw in some broccoli or spinach too because we really can’t have too many veggies… bottom line, YES you can most certainly have carbs before bed… just make sure it’s not junk food and you’ll be fine :tu:
Gordo Thu, December 29th, 2005, 08:37 AM There's not a lot of truth to it as really weightloss and weightgain depends mostly on your energy balance at the end of the day. Cals in versus cals out.
Especially when you are hypercaloric (calorie deficit) carbs at night may actually help preserve muscle because carbs are protein sparring.
Yes your metabolism winds down at the end of the evening....but in a deficit, there's little literature to suggest that your body would store those cals as fat. The key point here is in a deficit....as in cutting.
Important note....eat junk gain junk ;)
Hope that helps,
Gord

Your making me hungry :) better make a Flax Protein shake...:)
txitalian Thu, December 29th, 2005, 11:15 AM I ate carbs up until right before bedtime and got to single digit bf, so for ME, it's not a problem at all. While I do believe that in the end, it comes down to calories in vs. calories out, I have heard of some people having better luck cutting carbs out early in the evening. Try both methods for yourself for a while and see what works best for YOU.

Hey! Part of the no-thyroid club here (cancer when I was 8), and I believed the no carbs before bed idea for a long time. However, in order to get in six balanced meals in the day, I started including carbs in my latest meal, and I've lost close to 40 lbs. since late September. So from my personal experience, I don't think that eating anything (except maybe a whole pie...that would be kind of bad) before bed will significantly hurt your progress.
As with anything, it's a matter of personal experience. If you find yourself having a hard time with avoiding carbs before bedtime, try out some good-quality carbs in small amounts before sleeping, and see how it affects your progress within the next week. Everybody's different, and every body is different.
BTW, do you take Synthroid? I know that when I was at my heaviest (many moons ago), part of the reason was because my dosage was way out of whack. Trying to figure out hormone levels for a teenager is apparently about as difficult a science as turning lead into gold!
CASD Thu, December 29th, 2005, 05:23 PM Yes Snythroid.. and I just found out I'm in Hyperland..but Insulin resistant..so i gain while being hyper.. I'm getting the med's into shape as we speak..
Also I'm taking so herbal stuff for Spiking.. trying to get the insulin to even out... and Started the GI diet.. Lost 2.5lbs since mon. :)
