View Full Version : Anyone watch "pro wrestling"?
andi Tue, March 16th, 2004, 04:10 PM I figured since it's "sports entertainment", it doesn't really belong in the "sports and fitness" forum. Though you gotta admit, some of those bodies are amazing!!
I admit, I love watching the WWE. We watched Wrestlemania XX this past weekend and I noticed I paid much more attention to body shapes, musculature, etc, than I ever did before. You can definitely tell the natural vs. the unnatural, and those that are doing it without the "juice" are just damn incredible to look at in my mind. The younger guys like Randy Orton and John Cena.....
So, anyone else wanna fess up??
bloggins02 Tue, March 16th, 2004, 04:17 PM I used to, back when I had cable. I can't say I didn't enjoy it, although it was corny at times.
Then again, my favorite show is Star Trek: The Next Generation, so I don't know if you should be putting too much weight on my opinion :D
BusyChild Tue, March 16th, 2004, 04:28 PM John Cena's from my home town although I don't know him.
I usually have it on but am at my computer working and not really watching.
Its interesting to see the development these guys have. I used to think Goldbergs traps were insane until I saw Lesnar.
You can usually tell the roids users by the acne on their backs.
AndrewJones Tue, March 16th, 2004, 05:17 PM I used to watch it when WCW was in action. When WWF (now WWE) bought out WCW i stopped because i dont care for the so much story line.
WCW was way more about actually "wrestling" than is WWE. Also Bischoff (the CEO of WCW when it was in existance) was way better at making new and intriguing story lines than is McMahon, and his WWE cronies.
In any event, i find the lightweight division to be much more impressive than the Stone Cold Steve Austin/ Hulk Hogan, big guys who run around the ring and punch each other, as the cruiser weights actually display a bit of athleticism.
I will say though that Man Kind/Cactus Jack/Dude Love, is really crazy with all those "dangerous stunts" that he did back in the day, and if he fought like that again i would watch. I remember when he got a pile driver off the 2 level of the arena that he was at, onto a table and he had to be hospitalized for like 2 weeks.
Mahdimael Tue, March 16th, 2004, 05:59 PM I stopped watching wrestling when I was 13, I think. As we all know, boys have three distinct stages of life. They are categorized into obsessions:
0-11: Candy
11-13: Ninjas, Wrestling
13+: Girls
So it was then that I stopped watching wrestling

That's so true!! I'm surprised that more girls aren't interested in wrestling, just because of all the eye candy. Through granted, a lot of times when one of them opens their mouth you wish they hadn't ;)
And I like everything on your list. Candy, ninjas, wrestling, and girls. And I'm a girl. And I'm 30. Does that make me weird? :D

Then again, my favorite show is Star Trek: The Next Generation, so I don't know if you should be putting too much weight on my opinion :D
That show is great too and I like Enterprise although I heard its not going to make it past this season.

Not at all...only the best girls like what boys like. My fiance, for example, loves Monty Python. :tu:
superdave Wed, March 17th, 2004, 02:11 AM Andi,
I am a huge wrestling fan  . I watch Raw and Smackdown any chance I get. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch Wrestlemania because I had to work that night :( . But that is what the internet was made for. I knew all the results in real time, but I do wish I could have seen the show.
My wife thinks I'm a little strange to still watch wrestling, she claims they are nothing more than a male soap opera, but what can I say I like it. That being said I have to admit the storylines have been lacking a little bit since WWE became the only game in town.
If your really into wrestling and want to check out something funny, visit wrestlecrap.com
Anyway if you want to chat about wrestling sometime, e-mail me.
Now I'm off to check the wrestling websites
Jingo Wed, March 17th, 2004, 05:57 AM gotta admit to this too, i like to turn my brain off for a couple of hours and watch it :)
Watched wrestlemainia too, as it was on free over here in england (started at midnight tho, finished at 5am).
I started watching back when wcw was on a free cable channel over here (wwe is on a subscribe one) so i still have a thing for goldberg, but i gotta admit i loved the brock/goldberg fight, the crowd was all over their back, neither of them knew what to do, scsa was just smiling and enjoying watching those two stand there lost.
I like the cruserweights too, really is a shame they don't get more time, fights like rey vs tajiri and the old filthy animals vs Any other cruiser tag team were great. They shoulda given the cruisers atleast 20-25 mins at wm20.
Not a big benoit fan but good to see him get the tittle. I like HHH on raw and his char i just think his fights suck.
Wonder what will happen next week with this lottery, it's clearly going to be worked, becuase there's no way they'll split up Evolution, Bashams, wgtt and a few others, unless it's for a specific storyline, they also have to keep world/www, intercontinental/us and tag titles on the seperate shows. Some good potential tho, maybe singles push for wgtt, split rico from jackie and give him something decent to do, make a couple of new tag teams etc. They could split either rvd/booker or scottie/rakishi and have a tag team tourny for the next ppv
Reno_1ted Wed, March 17th, 2004, 06:17 AM I love wrestling to. I look forward to the shows every week, and am curently 1/2 way through WMXX on video (had to get up for work monday, no way i could stay up that late !!!)
Many of the superstars must be on roids i think. I cant see lesar having a back like that just from whey protien shakes twice a day ! ;) I prefer the look of angle, not over cut or over big, but athletic and natural looking (not to sound gay or nothing. ;) ).
My god, the Evening gown match at WMXX, now they are some bodies !!!!
I will be recomencing a column i write at wwfe.com and total-wrestling.co.uk after having had 3 months off. Check them out in early April.
Jingo Wed, March 17th, 2004, 11:39 AM lesnar is almost certainly natural, he was NCAA champ and that means drug testing, he's been that size for ages.
Compare to someone like scott steiner (big pappa pump AKA big poppin pills) who looked athletic but big for years then suddenly turned into a total muscular freak.
HobbesAB Wed, March 17th, 2004, 11:48 AM Wrerstling today is OK. I enjoyed it more with the NWA/WCW: The Four Horsemen, Dusty Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, etc.
Enough said.

I started with old school too when I was real young just by accident channel flipping on our 12 inch black and white tv.
The Von Erichs were awesome, wrestling barefoot and the CLAW. Horsemen were cool, Rick Flair Space Mountain, Rock n Roll express fueds with ... I forget the other teams name.
Then one day this guy who I thought acted very strange showed up his name was Cactus Jack. I thought he was a mental case with the BANG BANG shooting and the messed up things he did.
Who would think he'd go on to be one of the best.
AndrewJones Wed, March 17th, 2004, 01:29 PM Who was that really old hardcore guy, that was allied with Mick Folley (dude love/cactus jack/mankind) and then he turned on him and they had the most hardcore matches concievable?
AJ

AJ
Terry Funk?
Another hardcore legend
AndrewJones Wed, March 17th, 2004, 01:36 PM Yah Terry Funk.
Simply amazing the abuse these guys would do to themselves. I mean alot of wrestling is choreographed, planned, and designed for safety. However, some of the really insane things that these guys would do inflict serious injury because even though its preplanned and what not, its still incredibly dangerous (like the pile driver from the second story of a building onto the parking lot. With a live audience you cant fake that stuff.
I salute people that go to that length to entertain others.
HobbesAB Wed, March 17th, 2004, 06:01 PM You should have seen ECW when they were still "underground" Pretty amazing stuff there. OK, stupid also applies.

The Midnight Express with Jimmy Cornette. Beautiful Bobby and Sweet Stan. There was somebody prior to Stan but I can't remember his name. Midnight Express were ahead of their time with the moves they were doing.
One of my favorite old school fueds: Midnight Rider vs The 4 Horsemen
Anyone remember that one?

Oh yeah, I remember Cornette always carrying the tennis racket and occassionally bashing someone with it.
I don't remember the Midnight Rider.
I thought Double A the Enforcer was cool too, he just took care of business.
superdave Thu, March 18th, 2004, 01:42 AM I remember Midnight Rider/ Dusty Rhodes under a mask.
A couple of my favorites JYD Junk Yard Dog, and Bruiser Brody.
I can also remember when Stone Cold was just Steve Williams wrestling for World Class Wrestling.
Oh Yeah I loved the Freebirds Micheal Hayes, Terry Gordy, and Buddy Roberts. Those guys were ahead of their time.
Reno_1ted Thu, March 18th, 2004, 09:13 AM I cant see lesnar getting that big simply through training. He's an awsome talent and his deptarture a big loss to the WWE, but im sure he wasnt that big in his amateur days. Ive seen footage and he didnt look that big. Big yes, but not THAT big. Hes a beast !!!!! Maybe im just sceptical. If its natural then he truely is a genetic freak. And Steiner... No question !!!
My favourite era was the corporation Rock/Austin/Mankind days, u never knew what would happen next in those days (1998/99/00).
Have you guys seen Angle v Shane street fight at King of the Ring 2001?
HobbesAB Thu, March 18th, 2004, 09:17 AM I remember Midnight Rider/ Dusty Rhodes under a mask.
A couple of my favorites JYD Junk Yard Dog, and Bruiser Brody.
I actually met JYD. It was during the county fair - the main feature that night was Pro Wrestling. A friend of mine was the DJ for a classic rock station and did MC gigs on the side. Well, he had a date and didn't want to miss it so he offered me $50 to do it for him. I was in college at the time, home on break, broke, and bored - so of course I did it. I did the ring introductions for each wrestler. Awesome night! I had so much fun.
JYD vs Ivan Koloff. JYD won with the big Head Butt.
I can also remember when Stone Cold was just Steve Williams wrestling for World Class Wrestling.
He was still Steve Austin. Steve Williams was "Dr. Death" Steve Williams. I love remembering Steve Austin (with hair) wrestling with Brian Pillman as the "Hollywood Blondes" Classic stuff
Oh Yeah I loved the Freebirds Micheal Hayes, Terry Gordy, and Buddy Roberts. Those guys were ahead of their time.
Another all-time favorite: Michael "PS" Hayes.
andi Thu, March 18th, 2004, 09:26 AM Have you guys seen Angle v Shane street fight at King of the Ring 2001?
Yes, my God was that brutal. This is the one where Angle tried to put Shane through the glass panels on the entry ramp and it didn't break, causing Shane to land on his head.... so then Angle bashed him into it again? Shane O'Mac is definitely underrated when it comes to willingness to take bumps. He amazes me every time he's in the ring. We've seen him leap off tall scaffolding onto his opponent waaaay below, do something like a Vandaminator across the ring, kicking a trashcan into his opponent, and then that match with Angle. I love Shane. I suppose now that he's got a kid he'll probably be in the ring even less, but I wish they'd use him more.
I've only been watching for about 4 years, and pretty intermittently lately, but it's always fiun.
Jingo Thu, March 18th, 2004, 09:35 AM shane was just back recently feuding with kane for tombstoning his mum (aaaaah :) ) He does do pretty crazy stuff, tho i didn't like him stealing RVD's vanterminator, especially as RVD isn't allowed to do it. His drop from the ligthing tower at um... forget which ppv, recent one vs kane, not the ambulance match, was pretty sick, even tho he had boxes for landing on.
Oh and yes, steve austins real name is williams, but he never wrestled using it becuase of Dr Death.
Jingo Thu, March 18th, 2004, 09:39 AM oh and big show must be laughing. He got signed near the end of the wcw/wwe wars so is on a super high paying 10 year contract, and becuase of his size it doesn't matter that he's about 40% body fat, he prolly eats what he wants while the rest are tucking into their 10 chicken breasts and water hehe
Chim-Chim Thu, March 18th, 2004, 10:07 AM I used to be addicted to WWF and my girlfriends and I would watch it ALL the time! :D The funny part is that my boyfriend doesn't like it so I never get to watch it anymore! I tried to tell him it was just a male version of a soap opera but he didn't take the bait. He can't get into the cheesy storylines. I started watching during the times of Ravishing Rick Flair and stopped shortly after they had The Rock and Stone Cold join forces. HHH is so hot, but he is one of the worst fighters I have ever seen! Can anybody tell me if Chyna is wrestling again?
Reno_1ted Thu, March 18th, 2004, 10:20 AM I think shane is under-rated to, to take a beating like he did against angle deserves more respect then he gets. Next to Foley taking those chair shots from the Rock in the I quit match (1999 PPV i think), its the hardest beating the WWE has produced IMO.
HHH was crap for a good few years because of various injuries. Watch Judgement Day 2000 Iron Man Match, HHH can fight, and fight well ! He is the greatest heel of all time, because everyone hates him, and thats what a good heel does, make people hate them and want to see them loose. You dont meet many gals who like wrestling. :tucool:
Jingo Thu, March 18th, 2004, 10:59 AM yeah HHH used to be good in the ring, but he got injured and went away and bulked up with his time off, now he's just another power wrestler.
Still he's a good charactor and heal, i do like evolution in a love to hate kinda way. Flair and the rock at wm20 were hilarious :)
andi Thu, March 18th, 2004, 11:06 AM HHH is weird. I have always hated his character- his attitude sucked when he was in DX, it sucked when he was "married" to Steph, and it sucks now as part of Evolution. He's arrogant and almost annoying on the mic. But you know what? I LOVE him. I don't think I could stand it if he was a face.
The fact that he tore his quad during a match.... AND THEN COMPLETED THE MATCH.... astounds me. The guy is either completely out of his mind or is really dedicated to entertaining the fans. Or both. I love knowing that the real guy, Paul Levesque, is that determined. And cool! HHH will always be my favorite guy. To hate, of course.

Love him or hate him he is everything about the bizness. I used to hate him too and I remember him being Hunter Hearst Hemsley and thinking this guy is going no where. But he really stepped up when he needed to and took over.
He'll never leave for months at a time because he's sick of the business and I doubt he'll run off to Hollywood and forget wrestling. He's a champion who wrestles alot which is more than I can say about Goldberg.
He bulked way up when he tore his quad and thankfully he came down some now.
I remember the Rock making fun of HHH's mic skills (back when he was bad on the mic) imitating him with tons of "ahhh"'s
He's almost the only one left since Stone Cold doesn't wrestle, Lesnar and Goldberg are gone, Angle is about to have neck surgery and rumors are his career is over.

I loved it when the Rock gave Farooq a portrait of himself. The Rock is the most electricfying (sp) man in wrestling by far. His mic skills are just awesome, then with the rock and sock connection was over the top. When Mankind said "with the dozens and dozens of fans" I almost lost it.
Farooq just got fired today oddly enough after working an onscreen angle (which view tonight) where he gets fired.
andi Thu, March 18th, 2004, 07:45 PM Farooq just got fired today oddly enough after working an onscreen angle (which view tonight) where he gets fired.
No kidding?!! That's gonna be bad for the APA.... what a bummer. Where'd you read this? (About the real life firing, I mean...)
Jingo Thu, March 18th, 2004, 07:55 PM APA are past it and going no-where, dump bradshaw too, or give him something new to do charactor wise, but he's prolly too old for that.
Oh and HHH is off to Holywood :p he's about to take time off for filming comitments, part of why he dropped the belt to benoit, also when goldberg first won the title and they ran the bounty angle, HHH was filming for blade 3.
Only reason HHH isn't big in films is he's not good enough and doesn't have the right look. He's a better actor than steph tho lol
I'm looking forward to seeing trish as a heel, i think she's one of the better actors there (tho the standard isn't too high)

I read it one a crappy website called wrestlezone but I don't reccommend going there because the popups will kill you even if you have a pop up killer they still have tons of pop ups asking to install every piece of spyware known.

Well I've read that HHH has a real busy schedule between wrestling and movies where as the Rock just stopped wrestling altogether (other than recently just for WM). I think he knows he's not good enough for movies so I think he's just milking it for what its worth but he'll always be wrestling.
As a guy I don't mind the women of womens wrestling but I don't watch it because I really don't like any of the characters. When they say that the Ultimate Warrior was one dimensional I cannot help but think that Lita and everyone else is as one dimensional as they can get.

Looks like a lightweight night on Smackdown tonight. I can tell you who wins if you want.
Super Fink Mon, March 22nd, 2004, 02:00 PM I used to be a huge fan - but then kinda grew out of it until I became good friends with "Billy Kidman's" brother (his real name is Pete and his brothers name is Bill...kinda funny). Since then I have gotten back into it...I had lunch with Kidman and Torrie not too long ago (I crank called Trish Stratus from Torries cell phone...oh man is she hot)and had some drinks with Flair, Helms, Diesal (can't think of his real name right now lol) and Scott steiner (when they were all in WCW). Torrie is real nice in person...actually they were all pretty cool - I also have acted (if you'll call it that) in a few WWE commercials - the royal rumble one with the amish people taking on the little people (don't call them midgets!), the other PPV with the homeless street preacher and one in a similar style to fight club featuring Batista....My entire body is still smaller than his leg - but hes the most polite guy! In one of the takes Batista was taking a kick to the chest from this karate street fighter guy and I was supposed to catch him falling back - yeah that didnt work out too well since I was 5'8 and all of 170 pounds...
Anyway - I like wrestling again for its entertainment - but its nothing like it was when I was a kid!
Vitek Sat, July 30th, 2005, 06:07 PM The Midnight Express with Jimmy Cornette. Beautiful Bobby and Sweet Stan. There was somebody prior to Stan but I can't remember his name.
Dennis Condrey was the member before Stan Lane.
Sorry to bump such an old thread...I was bored tonight and figured I'd trawl the depths of off-topic.
I have been a huge wrestling fan for about 14/15 years now. Although my interest in the current product has waned since Vince has ZERO motivation to improve the product as he's raking in his millions regardless, I still cherish my childhood memories of early 90s WWF, as well as discovering late 80s NWA, WCCW, early WCW and nWo-era WCW that I never knew existed as a kid.
I got into the indy scene in 2001 and loved it - promotions like CZW had mouth dropping spotfests and ultraviolence - I read comments about Shane O Mac and Foley.....yes, while Foley is a hardcore legend, the current deathmatch scene is crazier - light tubes, flaming tables, weedwhackers. The first picture is VERY GRAPHIC and shows what I mean. Seriously, don't view unless you can stand the sight of alot of blood.
CZW - Nick Mondo following a weedwhacker shot (http://www.czw1.bizland.com/whacks/DSC03976a.jpg)
Same guy a year later (http://www.whacks.bizland.com/CZW/TOD2/DSC00948.JPG)
ROH had great technical matches, IWA Mid South had the garbage wrestling and solid wrestling too. I also got into Japanese promotions like Toryumon and NOAH also. Toryumon (now called Dragon Gate) offer great high flying moves and innovative sequences, while NOAH provides the traditional, very stiff (http://quebrada.net/multimedia/Kawada2.jpg) Puroresu.
A couple years ago I got burned out with the indy scene when everything became one big pretentious trend. The tiny guys did the big guy's power moves. The huge guys did the moonsaults and 450s. Everyone did contrived submission sequences when the British style caught on. The violence got to the point where the only way to top yourself was to die. While there was plenty of innovation, realism and kayfabe were kicked in the ass and out of the door, wrestlers got attitudes like they were awesome, rivals in one promotion were a tag team in another....I just couldn't believe in any matches any more.
I practically stopped watching WWE as well at that point and turned to old school classics, guys who could tell stories and have credible matches where I actually gave a damn who won. I guess you could say I take wrestling pretty seriously - while I don't overanalyse things or fail to see the entertainment side of it, I still view wrestlers with huge respect and admiration and am not a subscriber to the 'hey it's just cheesy fun' philosophy.
Long post....as I said I have nothing better to do tonight.
