View Full Version : Omron BF Unit Question...

There are two settings on my new Omron... one is an "average" mode, and one is for "athletes." There's a formula in the instructions which tells you how to figure which you should use... if I recall, it's intensity of exercise X frequency of exercise (in days per week) X time of exercise (in hours per day).

So I'm confused as to which I should use. Up until about six weeks ago, I would definitely have been in the "athlete" range, as I was working out for 30-45 minutes a day, 6 days a week, in the upper intensity range (training for a marathon). But in the past six weeks, I haven't done ANYTHING (and needless to say, have put on a bit of fat with all the holiday eating).

I'd like to pick ONE setting and use it consistantly so I can track my progress accurately. I'm leaning towards using the athlete setting, since I will be back onto the old schedule moving forward. But if I was to rate myself right now, I'd definitely be "average". Any input/advice/ suggestions from anyone who is more familiar with this piece of equipment that I am?

I believe that the different modes have more to do with heart rate if I remember correctly. I've been known to be wrong many times though. :D

Ask them. Mine doesn't mention heart rate at all.

I would say athlete for you for about a month, maybe two, after working out. Athlete is about activity level.

I'm still skeptical of the numbers mine gives me.

Mine doesn't give reasonable numbers for me either. It used to tell me 17% but as I lost weight it went all the way down to a reading of 10%. Based on comparisons to other people's pictures here, and caliper readings, I believe I am closer to 14%. I've heard other people mention similar issues with the Tanita scales, but at least for me at this point my Tanita scale is giving me a more reasonable number (~14%) than the Omron unit.
