-I figured this was the best place for this-

So.. at my gym there is a side specifically for females.
I havent had much of a look at the opposing co-ed side- but the females side has some televisions for our keen treadmill, elliptical, etc folk.
Here's my question :

WHAT is the need for watching Oprah, the News, or Dr. Phil at the gym?
Seriously.. i find those to be the most unmotivational, depressing things to be looking at during a work out of any degree.
"Yes, that great episode of dr. phil on babyshaking just captivated me So Much that i had to work out in a more determined way" ... o.O
"Seeing a hurricane's effects on certain areas really gets me all revved for a workout!"
.... I'd rather see Blue's Clues. Blue's Clues gets Me pumped like crazy! :cough:

Please- i know "to each his(more so her) own"- but tell me im not alone in my lack of understanding. Or please- try and explain this mesmerizing 30min-1 hour event to me.

... babyshaking .. of all things.

Ask them to change the channel. When I used to go to Gold's they would do it. Of course they had 8 different channels on at once, so there were all kinds of things on to choose from (usually they'd always have a news channel on, ESPN, MTV, VH1, and then whatever else).

I guess its all about what your into.

The tv shows arent meant to motivate you to work out...they are meant to pass time while working out. If its an all female section of the gym, naturally they will have the tv stations that have shows geared tward women.

If you keep your mind off of working out and into something you can enjoy like Oprah ;) then your cardio time seems to pass by a bit quicker.

I happened to work out at a gym a couple of times when I went on vacation and no one there watched shows like that. It was either soccer, or women's volleyball (yes it was a "co-ed" gym). :D

It's seemingly insane to ask them to change the channel for that exact reason- too many different things at once. I think the only way that would work properly is with subtitles.

A-Pac
Hmm.. It just weirds me out a lot- surely it passes the time, but they are the kind of shows people watch and obsessively snack to out of some hypnotizing enthrallment with things that are morbid o.O ..
"girls are weird" lol

sc7389
See.. see that.. I'd understand watching the female equivilant to that.. i dont see why females want so much substance in their shows.

Well the ladies were watching guys play soccer and the men were watching women's volleyball. It all works out. ;]

Oops. They are not playing the volume out loud on all 8 screens at Gold's. :)

They have these devices on EVERY piece of cardio equipment. There's a headphone jack. You plug in headphones (gotta bring your own), then there's am up/down arrow for the channel and an up/down arrow for the volume. Pretty neat.

Now that you mention it! .. i think they were talking about getting treadmills with that sort of setup- and a little monitor in them.

I Really despise treadmills.. but, since youve reminded me of this wonderful advancement in gym technology- i think ill make it a point to treadmill-mosey along to a lack of dr. phil

Heck I take off my shirt and pose.

In the bathroom when nobody is looking. :)

I've seen guys literally going through posing routines though. Doesn't bother me as long as they're not in anyone's way.

I think id draw the line at someone feeling up their firm man breasts in the gym. That's something i wouldnt be able to handle.
Hence- i learned to stay where the girls lurk.. especially after one biker-esque, tattoo-covered muscley muscle man was doing Something when i walked in and all i saw was red and buldgy veins. I got scared away from the co-ed side :p

Just goes to prove us men love feeling on breast...even our own.

How ironic that I'm reading this right after I got back from working my chest...I had a feel or ten....while posing. When I got back home of course.

By the way, this thread got really funny!

Hmmm.....I can honestly say that I've never had the urge to feel up my own breast regions. And, although I've seen myriad examples of gym nuttiness, I have never seen a guy feeling up his moobs in the gym. That is pretty weird.

Okay, this thread took an interesting turn.

And that's why I love this forum so much. We all are so narcissistically inclined. I don't often feel myself up, but it's a good thing that mirrors don't wear out.;)

On the original topic, I think you're right, to a certain degree. I think if we took a survey we'd find that people who consitently work out to Metallica are more fit than people who consistently work out to Oprah. I wouldn't mind working out to Oprah, and if I ever buy that huge DVD set she just released, I probably will, and often, but I'm pretty sure they won't be my best workouts.

Do you feel up any of your other muscles...such as biceps / triceps (get your mind out of the gutter). Its just another way of checking your progress, feeling how hard your muscles are...or feeling on a good pump. Chest just happens to be one of my favorites to feel on. :D

My gym is in a predominately spanish neighborhood so they have a lot of soccer and spanish channels playing. I listen to my MP3 Player so I could care less whats on TV.

I'll stir the hornets nest a bit with my next comment. I really don't understand the concept of a womens only gym or having a womens half of the gym and a mens half. If they had a mens only gym women would be having hissy fits.

Of course I would prefer it if they had a womens side and a mens side because the women at my gym are usually the ones sitting talking / flirting for 10-15 mins between each set so I have to wait forever to use the machine (generally it always happens to be the last exercise I need to do before I go home.)

Oh well flame away.

 oh i love when i get people talking about man-breasts. : mission complete :
But if you havent seen it yet- you Really have to have a picture in your head of some- not so ripped- just very largely muscular male- in red spandex shorts with a reddish bandana.. standing in front of a mirror with his chest huffed out. just feeling lightly up and down with his hands. I dont know if that gets it across but its Really awesome if you can picture it.

Okay, this thread took an interesting turn.
- im good at changing my subject matter mid-thread. It's a habit- but i never expected breasticles to be mentioned. :p
Hm- i suppose the oprah, dr. phil, news deal is just a common ground- a pretty bad one though. Oprah seems far more motivating than the others though in comparison lol. Oprah is alright common ground :tu: - as i watched a first episode in.. my whole life..where she was helping people get proper fitting for bras. oh yes. it was enjoyable. Women need better common ground shows- maybe lifetime would be good. :ponder:

Well there will be no flaming from me. It's simply tailored to women more so due to media and complaints- and knowing that so many women will not be motivated to get-up-and-go to a gym if it is filled with testosterone. One thing i have yet to see if Grandma go to my local gym and chill in the co-ed side. Or any overweight woman that has a lack of self-confidence. Surely- it should be on a level of "i dont care. i'm just going to do this because im not here to impress" but that doesnt get through a number of women's heads. It still wont get through mine.
Then again- the same can be said for males. I dont truly think men would want to go to the gym to workout if it was filled to the brim with eyecandy- and the ones who can ignore it would be bombarded by the males not really interested in working out anymore.
But youre right- the males should have the same option. I like when the females are catered to- and kept separate from the males. Simply because it gets females going to a gym- but it doesnt bombard the men with them, their perfume, or their flirty ways. It wouldnt fully work without just about the same equipment on each side though. It's probably a good reason why they have female side and co-ed side, if even. So they dont have to buy more of the same equipment.

And i think women wouldnt have a hissy fit over a men only gym. Only if it had a better payment/sign up plan ;)

Hey Joe! Hopefully no offense was taken, I am sure you do your time in the gym man!

The way it usually goes down is a guy is in between sets and tends to look at himself in the mirror alot during this time, he also will take 2-4 of his fingers and kind of massage his chest as if he is sore and working out a knot, however he is really checking to see if his chest is harder after his last set than it was before...perhaps now that you are aware that it happens you will be more prone to witnessing it. Like whenever you learn a new word and it seems like everyone is all the sudden using it....

I feel blessed to be able to work out at the YMCA here in town, where we have no segregation of any kind, no music, no TV... oh wait, there may be TV in the cardio machine room. I don't use those. I'm also incredibly thankful that I'm so oblivious I don't notice other people's quirks, and so completely inattentive that I've never seen anyone fondling themselves in any gym I've ever worked out in.

I hope to continue in blissful ignorance of all of this. Where *did* I put those rose colored glasses???

Ha ha...no offense taken at all -- I was actually laughing the whole time at what we were discussing :) I usually don't feel my arms in the gym (I do afterward though)....or I guess sometimes I'll pretend to adjust my sleeve or something while feeling my arm. I guess even if I felt the urge to man-handle the breasticles in gym settings, the obvious spectacle it would create would ultimately prevent me from doing so. Now that you all have mentioned it, I'm going to be hypervigilant in the gym to any and all moob abuse.

Wow, he actually has a guy in his gym who screams at his db's and challenges them to a fight? Or is he challenging his reflection? I really have to start finding better gyms....mine is positively dull. The most excitement I see in my gym is when a guy puts the 35's where the 45's go.
