maat Sun, December 4th, 2005, 07:25 AM I'm a bit embarassed to post this but I need to know the truth.:o
The thing is I came home from college for a few days. Two days ago I tried to performe a simple test on myself. We have internal stairs for 3 floors (?) and I wanted to do the following: climbing and coming back X 10 times.
This is the thing: at the 4th time I was hardly breathing and at the 6 th I had to stop, can't breath right, muscle ache in all my legs. It felt like I had run for miles.
I'm pretty scared as I'm only 21 and I weight 15 kilos extra from my "ideal" weight. Should I be really stressed out or is this normal for someone not athletic?
I feel like If I want to begin a program it has to be something very light, at least at the beginning, some recommendations?
thanks!
UnkindLoving Sun, December 4th, 2005, 12:03 PM this is going to be a dorky 'n00b' relation :
But i was pretty much the same way prior to the past year and a half- ive done nothing athletic in my life aside from play frisbee over the summer as ive always refused school sports and things- and they made me think that "working out sucks!" which is completely wrong.
So what gets unathletic me to gain tons more stamina and take the time? Dance Dance Revolution. I swear.. it has to be "Dummys Guide To Gaining Some Stamina." <- hence 'dorky'. But hey.. it got me somewhere.
I'd say just do a lot of walking and/or running and start off simple.. but thats me.
I'm sure people on here will have much better things to say. ;p. Especially discluding ddr.
-dur. i also forgot to include some things.. really.. Drink Tons Of Water No Matter What. It will make you feel so much more energized and refreshed with whatever you end up doing. How i didnt drink water for most of my life is beyond me.
chicanerous Sun, December 4th, 2005, 12:28 PM Stairs are hard work and intense exercise! Did you warm-up and do some dynamic stretching (knee and leg lifts to loosen up) first?
maat Sun, December 4th, 2005, 05:59 PM thank you for the replies
no I didn't warm up but I climbed normally like, no speed up or stuff.
and I just wasn't able to do it after the 6th time :(

OK you're out of shape. This may or may not be a cause for concern. Since you are young, odds are your just out of shape and no underlying problems is there.
If there is no disease causing this, then it's one of the easiest fixes in physical fitness. You just need a sensible cardio regime.
What is your current cardio work like?

We completely believe you.
The whole deal of upping your endurance is to spend some time with your heart rate above your lactate tolerance. Dance, aerobics, kickboxing, jump rope, shuttle runs, treadmill, elliptical, stairmaster, rowing machine, mostly it doesn't matter. There are slight differences but the main effect is the same: forcing your body to produce high power (lots of energy in a short time) results in an adaptation that increases endurance.
Now you can also increase endurance by very long workouts at lower intensity, but that takes a lot of time. This is one reason why interval training, which takes less time, has become popular.

honestly, this isn't all that bad... you weren't working out before... you've only just started... work up to doing those stairs ten times... right now you know you can do it six times... do that three or four times a week and within a week or two I'm betting you'll be able to add a seventh time... then another, and another.. just take it slow... once you're spent (can't breath) STOP and cool down take a slow walk around the building to cool down and then stretch... make sure you stretch before you do the climbing too... it really will help... stairs really are hard, but they are GREAT for your legs and butt :tucool:
