View Full Version : Best alternative to Flax?
A-Pac Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 11:05 AM Just recently the taste of Flax Oil has really began to turn my stomach. So I was wondering what the best alternative to it would be.
I still incorperate nuts and natty p-butter through out the day as other EFA's, but would like a little more variety.
Oh yeah, fish oil is out of the question too.

Grind flax seed and mix it with Cottage Cheese. It's a little gritty, but pretty benign.
Have you tried fish oil capsules?
sc7389 Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 12:02 PM I would say fish oil. You can get some from ATW.
Happy Monster Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 12:07 PM I take special fish oil capsules (very high EPA to DHA) daily. There is no fishy taste and they swallow very easily. I highly recommend capsules. :)
lostmind Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 04:42 PM I eat a lot of whole flax seed. They have a very nutty taste, I actually enjoy it. I was getting an upset stomach from flax oil... I used to take it before bed and then have troubles sleeping... the flax seed doesnt bother me at all though.

Flax isn't that great anyway -- especially if you are male. I'd ditch the flax and take fish oil.
doordude42 Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 05:20 PM This is amazing. You all (except Lostmind) suggested fish oil AFTER he said fish oil is out of the question. Did you not read the post?
sc7389 Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 05:26 PM He probably edited it to say that after we posted. I didn't see that sentence there when I submitted my reply.
Having said that, you can look to get your daily required fats from something like olive oil and peanut butter or other nuts (pecans, almonds, peanuts, walnuts, pine nuts).
Happy Monster Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 05:33 PM Doordude, there's a difference between drinking fish oil and taking it in capsules that you can't taste! ;)

I'm aware of that. He never said why fish oil was out of the question though. It could very well be an allergy or something to that effect.
Happy Monster Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 05:41 PM Good point.
Still, I'd hate to dismiss it on taste grounds if that is his reasoning. :)

I wanted to clarify that it was the taste that turns my stomach...hoping to not get any suggestions that tasted similar or worse than Flax.
As far as fish oil, I would like to stay away from it for personal reasons. Besides it just seems really gross...ingesting oil that comes from a fish. Fish taste bad enough as it is, much less oil.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will continue to eat my p-butter, and nuts. Ill give the flax a break for a week or so and try to come back to it.

If you don't like the taste of flax oil, you can always take it in capsule form -- But, I might suggest trying ground flax seeds themselves. They are actually healthier than the oil because the seeds contain lignans that are generally stripped from the oil preparations. Many people sprinkle the ground seeds on salads etc.
1FastGTX Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 06:29 PM I don't know anyone who LIKES the taste of flax oil. A friend of mine takes it straight up from a tablespoon like it's cough syrup, nasty. You can always just use less and mix it into several meals (cottage cheese, shakes, etc.). Capsules can come in handy, but you'll be taking a boat load of them to get the same amount of fish oil for 1-2 tablespoons.
You can also try fish oil. :spank:

I tried it and CAN do it but I really prefer not to!
Do you chase it with some Kool Aid or something? That's how I've had to do it. It still leaves a pretty nasty taste in your mouth.

Oh yeah, fish oil is out of the question too.I assume you take the flax w/ the shake.. why not just mix it in? I do it and that's the only way I can stand flax, in fact I can't even taste it

Yep. 1-2 tbsp. flax + nitrean + water and I don't even taste the flax.

Nope. Straight down usually followed by anything i'm eating that meal.

Maybe he needs to man up and just take the fish oil? Who is this "High Pitch Eric?"
I recommend the fish oil!

Or fish oil.
In my first post, I made the assumption that it was taste that was the barrier. Apologies for that assumption.
A-Pac Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 10:13 PM I read on another forum something about fish oil...perhaps that could be an option. :P
I think my distaste for flax came from when I tried to do a shot of it. Ever since then thats all I tatse when I mix it with my protein shakes.
#91 Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 10:30 PM are you shaking it or stirring your shakes?
i'm really surprised to hear that!! have you tried adding a sweetner to your shake? i would assume the taste of it is not so strong if that is the case, 1 tbsp of flax should not be enough taste
OH wait, are you sure your flax isn't rancid? the only time i have EVER tasted it and it was a terrible taste that i couldn't even finish my shake, was when it went bad on me
Skoorb Fri, December 2nd, 2005, 11:48 PM Pursuant to an earlier thread, I was under the impression that flax oil was a near-useless fat source for males seeking bumps in omega 3s, and not even that great for females.

It isn't totally useless, but it isn't that great. While ALA has some benefits on its own, the majority of the benefit one gets from flax is from its conversion to more biologically useful EPA and DHA -- The problem is that the level of conversion is very poor. Secondly, several studies have shown a positive correlation between ALA consumption and prostate cancer. You can get enough ALA anyway through a halfway decent diet -- no need to take mega-doses of it in the form of flax oil and also up your risks for other health problems.
Fish oil is a MUCH better alternative. It is much more effective and loaded with DHA/EPA (the little fishy has made all the DHA and EPA for you), and doesn't carry the risks that flax does. Tests generally show that fish oil is mercury free. I quit taking flax a long time ago and am glad that I did. Now I pretty much stick to fish oil.
Edit: Oh yeah, there is also a positive correlation between ALA intake and macular degeneration in both men and women. On the other hand, fish oil both reduces macular degeneration AND the risk prostate cancer. It is your call, but see no reason whatsoever to take flax when fish oil is so much better....and doesn't carry the health risks that flax oil does.
Skoorb Sat, December 3rd, 2005, 07:51 AM Tests generally show that fish oil is mercury free. This is my only concern of the stuff. I take a cheap walmart brand (well, it's a brand that walmart often carries for their herbs and all that, and it's inexpensive)--spring valley, I think. It says "purified to remove mercury and pcbs", but purifying something doesn't mean it's pure, just as washing my car doesn't necessarily mean I did a good job with it!
Are there some brands that are proven to be mercury free and some that suck?

How about "real" food like salmon. I eat wild or sockeye several times a week.

Im shaking it in my shakes. The flax isnt expired, but it is pretty gross tasting. Im not sure if thats all flax to me now. Maybe Ill buy a new little bottle and try that out. Hmm, my distaste for it happened pretty all of a sudden.

Isnt flax good for omega 6s though? I dont have my bottle in front of me but I think its omega 6.
I heard that too about omega 3, so I avoided the flax with 3 & 6, and just got the one with omega 6.
So I may be putting my prostate at risk by sup'ing with Flax?

i didn't even realize there was an expiration date on it but my flax went bad, and went fast and this is about 2 months after opening the bottle
flax isn't too expensive right? i would buy another bottle and compare, it goes bad pretty easily
do you keep it in the fridge at all times? also away from lighting?
i'm that surprised that you can taste it in the shake, which is why i ask, even in my less tastefull shakes i have never tasted it

Its not 'break my bank' expensive, but its a lot more expensive then you'd think. Ill try picking up a new bottle. I think Im about half way through the old one...so oh well.
I keep it in the fridge all the time. On the middle shelf, so I guess its not really near light.

Yeah, actually, consumerlabs tests supplements for their claims regarding purity and active ingredient content. They tested 41 brands of fish oil supplements and found that all brands were free of mercury, but they did find that some brands were better than others (some brands had spoiled product). You can check it out on their website...they provide some info, including some brands which passed the test -- but you gotta subscribe to get all the details.
check it out here: http://www.consumerlabs.com/results/omega3.asp
