View Full Version : I'm really getting sick...
wh0rume Mon, November 28th, 2005, 11:21 AM I'm really getting sick... seriously.
I think it's a cold coming on.
My throat started feeling weird last night before bed, and it's a little soar today.
I think this is going to turn into a cold or flu.
so - since it's the beginning, would it help if i started taking VitaminC (3000mg a day) and VitaminE(400iu a day)?
or would it really not have any effect?
(plus alot of water)
SOMEBODY HEAL ME!
karatetricker Mon, November 28th, 2005, 11:24 AM I got that almost 2 weeks ago. Sore throat crept up and I was worried it'd turn into something worse as usual.
As usual, I rested, drank tons of water, took my multi and vitamin C at night and it was gone in about 5 days.
dodus Mon, November 28th, 2005, 11:51 AM In my biology class last year, we looked at a couple studies about vitamin C and illness...I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure that the people taking vitamin C didn't recover from their illness any faster than the ones taking the placebo. Then again, my professor was an idiot.
Hort Mon, November 28th, 2005, 12:01 PM The only thing I've found that significantly shorterns the duration of a cold or lessens its severity is the nasal inhaler "Zicam".

They make chewable Zicam that works good too. I used it when I had a rotten headcold last winter and it helped immensely. It helped most with the head congestion and brain fog you get with a bad head cold. I was surprised at how well an OTC cold remedy like that worked... previously, I thought they were all like Nyquil - just enough alcohol to knock you out after you took it.
Try it.

wh0rume Mon, November 28th, 2005, 12:27 PM does this "Zicam" make you feel tired at all?
TheRyanator Mon, November 28th, 2005, 12:33 PM Hey Wh0,
I just beat a similar cold. I usually get a cold and it lasts for a couple weeks from start to finish. This time around the first sign of sore throat I started taking Vit. C, Zinc and Garlic every 4 hours. I drank constantly Green Tea with fresh lemon and I think the thing that really helped knock my cold out in 3 days instead of 2 weeks was the Echinacea that I took right away when I started feeling sick. As long as you take it when you START feeling sick it boosts your immune system to get rid of whatever is ailing you. I would recommend getting some Echinacea, it is worth the investment and it will last you a good amount of time and help you drastically reduce the length and severity of colds/flus. I also know that Golden Seal works really well when combined with Echinacea in the first day or so of feeling sick.
Hope some of this helps.

Not me. It made me feel much better, and I was using it while I was at work.

Hort Mon, November 28th, 2005, 01:10 PM No side effects to Zicam... it's not an antihistamine, etc. The nasal spray can burn just a tiny bit if your sinuses are a bit raw.
Dew Mon, November 28th, 2005, 02:42 PM welcome to the club. I'm sick too, but more of a flu like illness then a cold. To be honest, I'm not big on drugs (I think its because my dad is a doc, so I don't get jack shi... in the world of drugs) so I usually let me body fight it. I find running, working out, and rest are the best things for me.
guava Mon, November 28th, 2005, 04:26 PM I like your new avatar. It's not as perky as the sock puppet, but it's a big improvement on the grouchy face you've been using.
wh0rume Mon, November 28th, 2005, 04:38 PM my larry david face avators change with my mood.
chrisb Mon, November 28th, 2005, 04:57 PM It seems like everyone is getting sick lately... I just got it the second time in a month. I need more sleep :(
jim331656 Mon, November 28th, 2005, 11:22 PM I like cold ease zinc loz and vitamin c. 3000 mg might be a little much and upset your stomach. I was taking my multi and 500mg of c 3x's a day.
Reeze Tue, November 29th, 2005, 01:38 PM I always develop a cold this time of year - often more than one. This year it threatened twice. Both times I just ate lots and lots of vegetables and fruit and it it never developed. In my experience, if you can recognise it early enough you should be able to stop it coming on. If it develops you're obviously going to have more difficulty.
wh0rume Tue, November 29th, 2005, 02:44 PM well, today my soar throat is 3 times worse than yesterday, and i'm feeling pretty drowsey.
i got a full night of sleep the last two nights, too.
I went to the grocery store last night to look for Zicam, but only found the nasal spray/swabs.
it's not really in my nose at all... well, i guess it is a little...
it feels like a head cold so far.
i bought this "Theraflu" crap, but it only seemed to make me drowzey.
I'm going to stop at walgreens right now to look for the pillform of Zicam.
Dew Tue, November 29th, 2005, 06:59 PM Keep in mind it doesnt have to be in your nose to use a nasal spray. The nose is just a quick way to get the medicine in you because of how easily it can reach the olfactory epithelium which is very vascular (blood stream...bingo!)
Naturegirl Sat, December 3rd, 2005, 01:40 AM Yeah another vote here for Zicam. Works like a charm:tu:
wh0rume Sat, December 3rd, 2005, 01:43 AM apparently so does a healthy diet, rest, and vitamins.
i was over it in 3 days.
Day 1 - Soar throat
Day 2 - Crazy Soar throat
Day 3 - Coughing up crazy shit
Day 4 - Healthy
JoeSchmo Sat, December 3rd, 2005, 01:50 AM High dosages of vitamin C haven't been shown to prevent colds, but it has been shown to reduce the severity and duration slightly. Also, zinc has been shown in some studies to reduce the duration of the common cold. So I agree with the other posters -- give 'em a shot.
moltar Tue, December 13th, 2005, 01:07 PM You need to sweat a lot. Drink lots of liquids and dress really warm.
- Black tea with lemon
- Black tea with honey
- Black tea with homemade jams
- Water
If you can - rest as much as you can. Just lay in your bed and watch movies all day.
Make sure you get LOTS of fresh air. Go outside for a bit and ventilate your house as often as you can.
Take showers to wash off all the sweat.
I personally never noticed any benefit from pill vitamins. I prefer real fruit. Eat apples and other fruits.

I think he has got that one down!
airforcePTL Tue, December 13th, 2005, 02:27 PM Cold Eeze works like a charm! Remember to wash ya hands or use hand sanitizer frequently so you don't spread the virus. Also a good prevention method  You would not believe how many times you touch your face w/out noticing.
