Okay...so I have a confession to make. I didn't lift very much during football season, and I especially avoided leg workouts.

Now that football is over, I've started lifting again. I did my first legs workout on friday. I had a good workout, and my lifts have increased. I had the typical difficulty of walking and walking on stairs that comes with leg day. But, something new happened. I think it is because of the fact that I haven't been lifting a lot, and I did a heavy workout all of a sudden, which I guess I wasn't used to. Anyway, my legs stayed sore.

It's sunday morning now, and my legs are the sorest that they have been. I iced yesterday, but it didn't help. I can move around, but It's awkward and not easy. mostly my quads that are sore, probably from all the squats and lunges.

I wouldn't be complaining about this, I would just wait for it to go away. I have a question though...is there anything I can do to temporarily alleviate this? The reason I'm asking this is because I have a game that I have to play in today which will involve a lot of running. Obviously, this could be a problem. I might not be able to run very well if I can't even walk well..

I'm guessing there's not a good answer, and I'm just going to try to have to deal with it, but I thought I'd check. And I know a couple of you might say I have to wait it out...but I'm playing today, so that's not really an option.

P.S. - I hope the duration of soreness decreases with future workouts. I think it will because I don't remember it from the past. This is because track is starting and it will be hard to run every day with DOMS in my legs!!

If it's just DOMS, get moving. If you have to walk tiny steps, do that. Circulating the blood through the legs is helpful. Get hydrated and stay hydrated.

That's all it is. Nothing serious.
You were right, I didn't really have any problems during the game. I played most of the game, and the soreness didn't really impede my running.
I drank a lot of water, iced last night, took a cold/hot shower, and took some aleve. Lol.
I don't think any of that really helped, but I'm glad it didn't really bother me. It might've helped a little that I walked for half a mile on a treadmill and stretched out beforehand...

I expect that this will probably happen less and less as I get back into lifting....

Be good to check out the local health/bodybuilding store for any supplements to reduce soreness and increase recovery. Also make sure you get a lot of protein in your diet.

Work it so that you do the majority of your running before leg day.

Stretch and heat. Cold compresses are only supposed to be applied for the first 24-48 hours. If I were you i'd stretch real good and apply some topical heat like Bengay or something of that nature.
