Gamma Linolenic Acid or GLA is an interesting fatty acid. It has been shown to encourage weight loss in studies, lower blood pressure, and decrease cardio vascular risk factors among other effects. People normally produce GLA on their own, by the action of an enzyme (D6D) which occurs naturally in healthy humans, through a transformation of linolenic acid- which many of us get alot of in flax seeds or oil.

The problem is some people don't have much D6D because of a condition they may have like diabetes, thyroid or pituitary problems, or possibly just don't make the enzyme because their genetics are just that way. Also trans fats have been implicated in disrupting the D6D enzyme.

GLA is found in small amounts in organ meats and in certain seed oils such as evening primrose oil, borage oil, and black currant oil. Hemp oil also contains GLA but this oil has no history of consumption by humans. The percentages of GLA in these specialty oils are as follows:

Evening Primrose Oil 10%
Black Currant Oil 17%
Borage Oil 23%

Anyway I thought I'd throw this out there if anyone is interested. Nutrition and supplements is a little slow today. I thought the folks with a suppressed thyroid may be especially interested

I'm thinking of putting together a comprehensive guide to fatty acids, including all the omega 3's and omega 6's, short, medium, and long chain. Also what the best natural sources of those are and their uses and effects... stay tuned! Actually that sounds like alot of work, but I'll put up a fatty acid something or other here and there.

So many fatty acids perform very small but key roles in our bodies, it is really fascinating and I believe a major key to health.
