View Full Version : I've been buying "Pro-Rated" Whey Protein at COSTCO, how do I know if its any good??
Noah Fri, March 12th, 2004, 08:29 PM COSTCO has PRO-RATED High Quality - 100% Whey Protein shake mix, 6 lbs for $20. Its convenient for me since I shop there anyway, but how do I tell if the stuff is garbage? Anyone know if this brand is ok to keep using? Thanks.

i bought chocolate and it tasted fine although i didn't think it had good mixability. i didn't have any other problems with it but like you, i doubted it because of price. it's sold on a lot of reputable supplement sites , although that's no testament to the quality of it. i switched to Optimum nutrition and pay more for it, just to be sure i'm getting a quality product and have confidence with what i put into my body.
SCHTEEVIE Fri, March 12th, 2004, 10:09 PM to determine quality, check the amount of protein per serving, and check the total serving size to see how much isn't protein.
you also want to check the "type" of protein.
My brand is 30 grams of whey protein isolate in a 35 gram scoop - so that is 86% protein; I only use isloate as it is the highest quality.
Optimim Nutrition protein is a blend with concentrate, so it is not the highest quality.
if you guys are in the states - I suggest you order from "all the whey" it is a great price and you can get pure isolate and a good ratio per serving.
The only reason I am hesitating is because I have a lot left from my previous local purchase, and I haven't determined what it will cost to ship "all the whey" to canada.
Specialbear Fri, March 12th, 2004, 11:13 PM THis should be in other forum, but i use the same thing, and the price is unbeatable. Use a blender for maximum taste. If using straigt, use VERY COLD WATER AND SHAKE
fluke Fri, March 12th, 2004, 11:59 PM I use Pro-Rated as well. I do like the favor (Vanilla). I think it has something like 23grams of protien in each 30gram scoop. It might not be the best, highest quality stuff, but it cant be that far off, and it certainly does the job. You really cant beat the price. I'm stickin with it.
I was suprised at the amount of healthy food available at Costco. I bought a big box of Quaker Oats, some healthy cereal called 'Optimum Power', and a huge bag of relativly healthy pretzles (not to mention lots fish, chicken, and vegetables). Its a good place to shop for this lifestyle.
Mahdimael Sat, March 13th, 2004, 12:15 AM Yep, it's good. I like the chocolate taste, though I suspect at some point I'd like to try flavors beyond the two they offer
zamboni Sat, March 13th, 2004, 05:47 AM I use pro rated. Mixability isn't an issue if you use a blender, I've yet to see a protein powder that has chunks after 10 seconds in one

I'm going broke saving so much money at Costco
I love to buy their huge pork tenderloin logs. Almost 99% fat free and takes so freaking juicy after being grilled!
I recently heaped Curses on Costco when they stopped selling Maranatha natural peanut butter!! Bastards! That is one of the best natty pb brands and it costs an arm and a leg everywhere else!!

You sure? I bought some there a month ago when I went shopping,. Costco has been known to just run out of stuff for awhile.. I'd check again next time.
zamboni Mon, March 15th, 2004, 02:24 PM has weird product cycles. Every one is different, mine stopped selling pro-rated protein awhile ago. ick

yeah, my Costco (St. Louis Park MN) didn't have any whey stuff for awhile, then they got this no-name kind in for $25/6lb. that's only 19gm per scoop, but it tastes a lot better than Pro-Rated and makes a very creamy drink w/milk, so I use two scoops. double-dosing isn't especially cost-effective but it was there and I needed some. Pro-Rated choc. flavor just tastes nasty to me and doesn't mix up very well without a blender. it gets all lumpy in a shaker.
BRobinson Wed, March 17th, 2004, 12:10 AM I use the pro-rated stuff. The protein content seems fine, I'm not a protein nazi so I don't worry about it too much, it's just something to have for breakfast that will start my metabolism and will get protein in my system for my workout later each day. Personally, I think the chocolate tastes like utter crap, but it's what I have till I use it up so I've gotten used to mixing it with water every day and just pluggin' and chuggin'. I usually have to wash out the aftertaste, but eh, oh well. It does what I need it to do.
Specialbear Thu, March 18th, 2004, 11:00 PM dang, i was gonna go w/ choclate next. Any ohter opinions on Pro-Rated Choc. ?
zamboni Fri, March 19th, 2004, 04:34 AM I like chocolate. Then again, I can chug just about any protein shake. Its all the same to me.
StanDinero Fri, March 26th, 2004, 05:14 AM HA! I just bought some today, I got the vanilla kind! it taste very very good! yay! kudos :tu:
Abbershay Sat, March 27th, 2004, 01:18 PM does sams club have anything good?
I have to lose all my weight before i start with these things dont i?
moeamaya Sat, March 27th, 2004, 02:25 PM For the original poster: I know its been tested and it passed by meeting all label claims...but I just cant find the site. I promise though that it is a good protein.
Sam's club: they sell a bunch of vitamins, CLA, and stuff like that but at the one near me in AZ they dont sell any protein besides soy :( Ive tried the Pro_rated Chocolate but I just prefer ON for taste, but PR does have a really appetizing price.

daveo Sat, March 27th, 2004, 09:23 PM I have to lose all my weight before i start with these things dont i? Not at all! It's a protein supplement. You wouldn't wait until you were healthy to take a vitamin would you?
Go get a jug and make some shakes, it can be a good sanity saver if you're having issues with your diet.
