I'm sitting here wanting to hop on my exercise bike and get a good workout in, but Ben Folds is playing on iTunes and it isn't getting me pumped exactly:p

What are some songs that get you pumped to do a workout or that you listen to while lifting/running, etc.? I need to set up a work out playlist that'll sort of keep me motivated :)

This may sound silly, but I just put some more songs on my mp3 player and my new favorite to listen to during cardio is "the distance" by Cake. Such a great song......

When I'm running, I listen to the soundtrack from Run, Lola, Run. Cheesy German pop music, but it has a good beat.

Lifting, I listen to Green Day, Fatboy Slim, Danielle Dax, The Prodigy... a bunch of fast stuff (I don't listen to a lot of metal, myself).

The only music I've been able to listen to while doing cardio is Progressive House / trance.

In particular a DJ from Germany Paul Van Dyk is my favorite because he keeps the beat of the music at quite a fast pace. There are others including:
John Digweed
Sasha
Paul Oakenfold
Tiesto
Chris Fortier
Satoshi Tomeii
Danny Howells

For weight training I can listen to just about anything.

The music I listen to working out differs a great deal from what I would listen to otherwise.

This may not be to everyone's taste, but I like to lift to loud and aggressive music.

Want to add 15 pounds to your bench/squats/deads?

1) Download this (http://www.twowiresthin.com/mp3/Dry Kill Logic - The Dead And Dreaming - 01 - Lost.mp3) (Dry Kill Logic - "Lost") or this (http://www.twowiresthin.com/mp3/CMR - Sample CD - 03 - Medieval - DIECAST.mp3) (Diecast - "Medieval")**
2) Play it LOUD.
3) Lift.

The first time I heard "Lost" I felt like I could lift a car. It's not like I sit around listening to this stuff, but when I lift weights it's perfect.

Listen to the whole thing. It may take some getting used to if you're generaly working out with Van Halen. ;)

A few more sample songs I have available for download** can be found here: http://www.johnstonefitness.com/news/jul_2005_news_archive.php#07302005

John,

I'm pretty sure I can reccomend you a slew of stuff you'll love lifting to if you're into Diecast.

Basically, my music is full of crunchy chug-riff breakdowns, insanely harsh/barked vocals, and a lot of time-changes. Anyone into the heavier stuff, check out these songs...

The Acacia Strain - 3750 (available at www.acaciastrain.net, I believe - I always forget their website) warning - this is the heaviest band I've ever heard. 3 guitars + full stack + low as hell tuning = brings the chug
Dead To Fall - Bastard Set of Dreams (available at www.deadtofall.com)
Killswitch Engage - To The Sons of Man (from their album Alive or Just Breathing)
Throwdown - Forever, Declare Your War, Unite
Bury Your Dead - Magnolia, The Color of Money, Top Gun (they have an odd fixation with Tom Cruise)
On Broken Wings - I Do My Crosswords In Pen, Six Hundred Cubic Centimeters, Frozen Over, Suffer
It Dies Today - My Promise, The Depravity Waltz, Blood Stained Bed Sheet Burden
Caliban - Forsaken Horizon, Bad Dream, The Beloved and The Hatred, The Revenge
As I Lay Dying - 94 Hours, Forever, The Beginning

John, I know you like Killswitch and God Forbid - Caliban's album "The Opposite From Within" is directly up your alley, they've toured extensively with Killswitch, very similar sound nowadays. Band from Germany.

If anyone wants to chat about the heavier stuff, just drop me a PM, I'm full of reccomendations... I can't wait to lift tonight to the newest Black My Heart record... so so harsh. Perfect for deads. :tucool:

Edit: On the rap side of things, any and everything Jedi Mind Tricks. It's like the rap equivalent of metal - raw, gutteral, violent, with awesome production.

Have you ever attempted lifting to any grindcore? If you're going for pure intensity then this would probably be the genre of choice. Also, most of the songs clock in at under a minute which may be better for individual sets.

I listen to Trance mostly (Tieso-type music, Paul Van Dyke, etc), with some metal thrown in for fun.

FYI, I've been using an application called StationRipper (http://www.stationripper.com) to download songs for a while now. Can get a thousand+ a day, it's like recording off the radio. Cut them up into song with band/song names (just MP3's) From what I've read, it's actually legal (same as TiVo is). And I give away a free iPod nano each month, which never hurts

I thought I'd share this with all of you. It's a bunch of electronic dance mixes that I've done over the past two years. Feel free to download any of them, if they help motivate ya! All of the mixes teeter around 140 BPMs which is slightly faster than the typical Tiesto/Digweed stuff. Enjoy!

Heavy. Breakdowns. Screaming. Oh yeah.

John Stone, I'd check out some of my reccomendations based on the fact that you lift to KSE/Unearth/Shadows Fall/other Massachussets bands...

The Acacia Strain - Carbomb, Smoke Ya Later, Sunpoison and Skin Cancer - This band is unrelentingly heavy. Three guitars tuned insanely low (I think down to C with the bottom string at A# or something) and just rhythm-mosh driven stuff. Vince Bennett has an inhumanly deep growl. Energy doesn't even begin to cover it. The album "3750" is almost all I lift to, and it's only 25 minutes long.

Bury Your Dead - Sunday's Best, Eyes Wide Shut, Risky Business, 33RPMS - Massachussets toughguy hardcore, right up the Acacia Strain alley, but with more two-step and singalong. Fun stuff in the gym.

It Dies Today - My Promise, The Depravity Waltz - harsh, so much energy, I start jumping around when Depravity Waltz comes on.

Through The Eyes of The Dead - Two Inches From A Main Artery, Beneath Dying Skies - this is what happens when ALL OUT THRASH meets death metal and hardcore kids. I can't even begin to tell you how good this is to lift to.

All of these bands have profiles on www.myspace.com, with sample tracks.

Alternately, I often lift to Wu-Tang Clan - Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt, The Blueprint, The Black Album, and a bunch of Jedi Mind Tricks albums. Hip-hop (old school, anyway) and hardcore seem to go well together.

Edit: Holy shit, haha, I didn't know I already replied to this old-ass thread. Anyway, also, ONYX - All we Got Iz Us is great too.

Now I am pissed off that I left my iPod at home and will be going straight to the gym from work without it!

Many of mine come down to songs you can't understand the lyrics to wether it be foreign or just to much yelling, but my workouts are mainly this:

Rammstein
Godsmack
Slipknot
System of a Down (<--how'd that get in there?)
Mudvayne
Acid Bath

Don't give me shit on Rammstein, I can understand up to three words on that disk now.

**All these songs were on free sample CDs, so I think it's cool for me to share. I purchased all the full CDs after hearing the samples. Parental advisory - Explicit Lyrics.

As good as those two songs (and that CD) are, they're definitely not hardcore. I think they count as "screamo", as much as I hate the name of that genre (and most of the other bands in it.)

While I'm at it:

Dead to Fall - Bastard Set of Dreams, Eternal Gates of Hell

So, so good. At The Gates-influenced brutal metalcore. I'm seeing them on February 18th with the Acacia Strain and A Life Once Lost.

What?! No Armin? shame on you! :nono: just kidding

I am a liitle (lot) older than most of you so my taste in music is a little different. I have burned a number of cardio cds for myself, but always have some of the same songs on all of them.
Sultans of Swing-by Dire Straights
Fire Inside----------Bob Seger
and songs by Donna Sommer , Gloria Estefan, Elton John, Billy Joel, and some old fifties rock and roll hits.

When lifting I like to listen to some heavier music like Tool, A Perfect Circle, Alice in Chains, G n' R, Metallica (old metallica), 311, and S.O.A.D. Sometimes I lift to Rush to because those guys shread and I feel like the way they play their instruments is like a form of weight lifting.

Cardio is a whole different beast. I listen to a variety of music in general. Some things I listen to during cardio are Talib Kweli, Mark Knopfler, Herbie Hancock, The Funky Meters, Beck, A tribe called quest, The Beatles, Mos Def, Bela Fleck, Radiohead, Taj Mahal, The Who, John Scofield, and others. I'll stop now because it will eventually just turn into a list of all the music that I own/like.

They did well and they deserved the world series victory last year. No doubt about it. That being said, I find the White Sox team very boring. I don't know why, perhaps no real big name hitters. Konerko's very good, but that line up puts me to sleep. Thome could be good there next year though.

Shouldn't you be addressing that same question to the cubbies fans? :tu:

Good point. But all the cub fans I know seem to be talking about the White Sox now. Heh. Good luck in the East. Looks like the Yankees are beefing up their pitching and outfield. And Baltimore is always competitive.

Then they aren't Cubs fans!
I'm a *south-side* Cubs fan, and I'm not fair weather. I could have cared less if the Sox won or lost, my team didn't make it to the playoffs so I was emotionless throughout...

Meanwhile, I don't really need music to get me pumped up..but I think a good pump-up song is MOP's Ante Up! It's cliche, no doubt..but c'mon..that gets the blood flowing!

We won't hijack the thread here, but TheLemonSong you are right on man. If you are a cubbies fan then stick to being a cubbies fan. Maybe cause I am a red sox fan I would rather root for the cubbies any day of the week than the white sox. Regardless, your team is YOUR team for a reason. I would think that should ring true especially in towns like Chicago and New York where there are two teams to root for. But, its obvious people just like to jump on the bandwagon for teams when they win. I can't tell you how many "supposed" red sox fans popped up when they won the world series. :nope:

Now back to the thread. I forgot I also LOVE to lift to rage against the machine. Man do I get fired up listening to that stuff! :guitar: :bb:
