Using bananas as a quick digesting carbohydrate source in a PWO Shake is acceptable? I heard they are 'nature's energy bar' and despite having fructose release energy quickly... is this true?

If not what is a better substitute? Currently I have something along these lines:

4 bananas (about 10 ounces)
300ml Soya Milk (is this the same as superfood 'soy'?)
20G Banana Whey (80% conc.)
Bit of Splenda.

Can I add strawberries aswell?

Cheers for the help. :D:tucool:

I say bananas are fine, but I know a lot of others disagree. I do not think soy milk is a good choice PWO, or in general though.

Even though i've heard bad things about bananas PWO, Anthony Ellis, in his fatloss program, does recommend 2 bananas + whey after lifting.

Why not recommend soya milk in PWO, or in general? I thought it was a super food?

this has been covered here numerous time. Search it and you'll see why it is recommened to use dextrose instead of a banana in your PWO shake.

Some disagree, but I've read many sources claim soy protein raises estrogen levels (and maybe lowers testosterone?), which is not something you want. It can lead to hindered gains and "man boobs".

I can't swear by that, but I've seen enough bodybuilders/pros mention it that I stay away as much as possible.

Aaaaarg, oh well, I'll just stick to Skimmed in future then. :)

I'll order some dextrose then.

Milk does funny things to certain body types. I'm off of it except perhaps once a week.

a little too many bananas....

Why not:

1/2 banana (14g carbs)
1/2 cup of quick oats (raw)
1 cup of skim milk
1 scoop of whey
1 TB dex

works out to
417 cals
72g Carbs
39g Pro
5 g Fat

Or something like that....

Best of both world....simple and complex carbs, taste, fibre, vitamins....not as "empty" as a pure malto/dex (sugar/sugar ...giving you just sugar) combination , if you are taking in cals....why not make them count?

BTW a handful of berries is an excellent idea (highly antioxidative)

You're easily persuaded. :p

Look, soy won't kill you, I just prefer to minimize it since nothing containing soy is particularly appealing to me anyway, why risk minimizing gains for no reason? If you don't mind switching to regular milk, I would. However, if you truly adore soy, then stick with it and see how it works out.

As for the dextrose, I've rarely, if ever used it PWO and done just fine. If you don't have a problem ordering it, then go ahead, just don't think it's necessary by any stretch.

I've used bananas PWO many times and found it to be just fine. It wouldn't be all I had PWO, but it sure wouldn't hurt to have it be part of your PWO meal.

Also, what are your current goals?

Spiking your insulin with dextrose is not for you if:

--You are overweight and trying to lose
--You have high blood sugar, are diabetic, or prediabetic
--You have high triglycerides

Remember, that when you spike your insulin from dex, anything not used immediately as glycogen replacement, or energy, will be stored as fat. Use it responsibly as you would any supplement.

I definitely have to second (and third) this post. I never had any issues with my blood sugar in my entire life and then this past winter I started using dex in my PWO. At my annual check-up several months later for the first time in my life my blood levels were pre-diabetic and my trigkycerudes were up. I am about 25-30 lbs still over weight. Now I use oats and a banana with whey for my PWO. In a few months I will check my blood levels again...But all the bad things I felt after my PWO with Dex just disappeared....

Weight loss is my goal at the moment. I started at 12 stone and am now 10'9 five months later (I'm crap at losing weight :p).

At the moment I'm really struggling at the gym to make gains and so losing enthusiasm for it. :(

Target is 10% BF and to run 15kilometres sub 1hr 10 mins by March. At the moment I'm at 8km in 40mins. Loooong way to go.

Just remember that you didn't become overweight overnight, so it's not going to come off overnight. Hang in there and enjoy the ride!

Do you have any threads going that spell out your whole diet and routine? If not, create one and myself and others will see what you might do to improve your fat loss.

As a compromise, there's also figs. They bring the benefits of eating fruits... while having a higher glucose (="dextrose") content than most other fruits.
