View Full Version : cardio while sore?
neptuneL38 Wed, November 9th, 2005, 05:34 PM i did legs 2 days ago,for the firsttime in about 6 months. Suffice to say, i was super sore and could barely walk! Would it not be a good idea to go jogging today? i reaalllly want to, but i dont want to cause any damage to my muscles. would it be better to wait? or would it not matter that much?
advice would be great, thank!
xingcat Wed, November 9th, 2005, 05:41 PM Warm up your leg muscles with a brisk walk for about 10 minutes, then do a very light stretch routine (not the kind you'd do "hot"). You'll find your legs feeling better, and you should be able to jog at a moderate pace.

If I were you i'd stretch real good and take a walk.
Gordo Wed, November 9th, 2005, 06:47 PM Yeah, a wa;lk would be better and serve as active recovery for your legs. You won't damage much walking. It's just that walking cardio takes longer to get done, that's all.
If you have access to an elliptical trainer that'd be good too. zero impact on the joints....but you have to be careful about targeting the quads with that.
jonnycashman Wed, November 9th, 2005, 07:45 PM I see nothing wrong with jogging. But it's been two days since you lifted? Get back into the gym. DOMS are normal when you haven;t lifted in awhile. Work through the soreness, it won't damage anything.

naw, 2 days since i did legs. i did back and shoulders yesterday, and im about to go do bis and tris today... actually im goin to start going to the gym 5days a week, to work a different muscle group each day, and im also gong to employ the doordude method of 2 fasted walks a day. i really dont like cardio all that much, because i dont like losing precious muscle.
i think lifting 5 days a week and walking a total of a hour a day fasted (split up in two walks) will get me where i want to be.
my goal is in 4 months be down to about 10% bf... iam probably at like 17% right now. is that a realistic goal with the plan i have ?

Works for me!!:tucool:
nazardo Wed, November 9th, 2005, 09:41 PM I used to jog for my fasted morning cardio the day after leg day. My legs killed so bad I had trouble getting down the stairs and out the door. Once I started jogging however the pain pretty much went away. Jogging doesn't impact your muscles the same way lifting does so I don't think you'll do any damage to them, though it may feel like it when you start out!
With that in mind I agree with the idea of walking as an alternative. I've cut out jogging and just walk for 45 minutes (or two 30 minute walks morning/night) 4-5 times a week. A nice comfortable walk, not too brisk. The fat is coming off faster than when I was jogging and I don't have to worry about watching my heartrate monitor and trying to stay in some stupid zone.
My leg day was today. If I can manage to get out the bed tomorrow morning I will definitely be walking ;-)

Don't you take a break from weights? Training 3 days in a row is pretty intense on the CNS. Two in a row is okay, but 3 or more usually is not.
I'd also warm up, stretch, and WALK. Don't go running off the muscle mass you are trying to obtain by working the legs.

neptuneL38 Wed, November 9th, 2005, 10:47 PM the cat has spoken.... i was thinking of cutting out all running and just focusing on one muscle group a day for a week..
chest, abs
back, mid and upper back
arms
legs, low back, abs
shoulders, traps
that with the fasted walking two times a day... but too much training ??
edit: plus the weekends off... perhaps a 3on1off,2on1off cycle would be better ?

If your diet is correct, that routine is by no means overtraining.
