Butterflyer Wed, November 9th, 2005, 11:39 AM You should check with your doctor, but I think additional protein is BAD for gout. Copycat Wed, November 9th, 2005, 12:21 PM To avoid gout, stay away from alcohol, beer especially, and avoid the catabolic state. In my experience I can do one or the other, but if I try both, I'll be hopping around on one foot for a week. So, if you plan to go out drinking heavily, don't do a hard leg-day for hypertrophy first. Training for speed-strength (sets of 1,2 or 3 reps) doesn't seem to be a problem. Added protein is also a factor, so if all else fails, cut back on that. Also I agree, see a doctor. If for no other reason than to rule out kidney-failiure and such. My doctor calls it the "Rich Man's Diet". I think it's because everything on that list is rich in oils. That's where the problem is. That uric(SP?) acid builds up in your joints and starts to crystallize. So, check your protein list (including shakes) and weed out the problematic elements. Start chugging that cranberry juice and schedule an appointment with your doctor immediately. I was prescribed with indocine which is an anti-inflamitory medicine. I think it also helps break down the uric acid build-up. It'll save you a lot of pain. Works great! The only problem is it tends to make me sleepy after about 4 hours... Hope that helps! Bambam07 Wed, November 9th, 2005, 03:04 PM Thanks everyone. I will make an appointment immediatly. This stinks!! A Better Drug For Gout A new drug, febuxostat, works better for gout than the standard treatments, according to a new study from the University of Oklahoma. Gout is a painful arthritic condition affecting the joints. It is caused by a build-up of uric acid in the blood and affects more than 5 million Americans, usually men. Febuxostat appeared to be more effective at lowering levels of serum uric acid in people with gout than the drug allopurinol, according the study presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Rheumatology in San Diego. This study compared different doses of febuxostat and allopurinol. Some patients received daily doses of 80mg, 120mg or 240 mg of febuxostat over 28 weeks. Their results were compared to patients receiving either 100mg or 300 mg of allopurinol. By their last three monthly visits, 69 percent of patients taking 240 mg/day of febuxostat had uric acid levels less than 6 mg/dL, compared with 65 percent of those taking 120 mg/day, 48 percent of those taking 80 mg/day, and 22 percent of patients taking either does of allopurinol. "The study is very encouraging because it shows that febuxostat was superior at lowering serum uric acid levels compared to allopurinol, the current standard of treatment," said lead researcher Dr. Robert Wortmann, professor of medicine at the University of Oklahoma. |
