View Full Version : Fasted Cardio Challenge
LoneStarChick Fri, November 4th, 2005, 09:52 AM Okay, does anyone else need a little motivation to do cardio first thing in the morning? I know that this is supposed to get your metabolism elevated for the rest of the day, and that sounds great to me! I say we see how many consecutive days we can go doing fasted cardio. I will start tomorrow. :gl:
LoneStarChick Sat, November 5th, 2005, 10:59 AM Yeah! The turn-out was awesome for this challenge...hehehe:lol:
I did cardio on the treadmill this morning, so...looks like I am in the lead!:D
Justitia Mon, November 14th, 2005, 09:40 PM I'll join you but for the moment, because of schedule, I can't do fasted cardio every day. But I can 5 days out of 7. Around Thanksgiving, I will be able to do fasted cardio 7 days for about 6 weeks. Then my schedule will start interfering again.
So I did fasted cardio today...So we are neck and neck.....:D (Don't worry though, I iwll get tripped up either tomorrow AM or by next Sunday....;) )
LoneStarChick Tue, November 15th, 2005, 09:02 PM Ha! I didn't know anyone responded to this thread!! Okay, I did it today, but I didn't do it for a few days before that. I was thinking about added some HIIT to my routine, so I wouldn't do fasted cardio every day either. Probably only 4 times per week.
:gl:
Justitia Tue, November 15th, 2005, 10:23 PM Well, that's great! We will have fun together!
I'll be curious as to your reaction to HIIT vs. LISS (Low Intensity Steady State, which is usually done in a fasted state at 75% MHR -max heart rate.)
You are a new member, so I don't know if you know that htere is a raging debate over the two approaches, whether one is better than the other or combo's, etc. I think people have pretty much concluded that each person should do what feels best to them. :tu:
Fasted cardio works great for me for a whole host of reasons -- but that's just me...
LoneStarChick Wed, November 16th, 2005, 09:07 AM I have no idea! I have done searches and read as much as I could find, even on other websites. Yup. Raging debate. Personally, I am pretty fat, and I don't mind if I lose a LITTLE muscle along the way if the fat melts off. I just figured I would do both and keep a close eye on my lean body mass vs. fat mass. I am using MyBodyComp. I hope this is pretty accurate. Anyway, until I see a loss in my lean body mass, I think I will do whatever it takes to lose this fat.
I am struggling to eat enough calories. I have been in a crash diet mentality for so many years that it's hard to say, "Okay, let's lose weight! I am going to eat twice as much as on any other diet that I have tried!" Of course, look where all of those diets got me! ;) I'm just going to keep coming to these forums. They are very encouraging!
...I guess none of that second part had to do with exercise, did it?...
LoneStarChick Wed, November 16th, 2005, 01:16 PM BTW: I did fasted cardio today. Didn't want to...almost didn't...but I did!
TarSeal Wed, November 16th, 2005, 01:23 PM I'm going to join up if you guys don't mind. I plan to do fasted cardio M-F. I do a 30 minute jog at 6 am. I take the beach when the tide is low, the road when it's high, and the treadmill when I sleep to late and the tide's high because of traffic. So far, so good 3/3 this week! I may add a weekend fasted swim on Sat or Sun.
Justitia Wed, November 16th, 2005, 08:06 PM Good going guys, welcome Travis. Well, I had such a good day yesterday, I had to screw it up. I oculd not get to sleep last night so I woke up late, still could not drag myself to the gym...so no cardio today..so I broke my 3 day streak....But my goal is 5 cardios a week, so I have saturday to make it up.
So 2/5 cardios this week still.
LoneStarChick Wed, November 16th, 2005, 08:28 PM Welcome, Travis! You live near a beach? Man, nice! 3/3 is nice, too. :tucool:
Justitia, I did the same thing yesterday and screwed up nutritionally. It happens.
Well, today makes 2/2 for me.
Justitia Sat, November 19th, 2005, 03:54 PM so I made cardio Thurday, Friday and to day Saturday. I just forgot to post.
SO I made my goals for the week on cardio:
Cardio: 5/5. (I missed 1 weight workout this week, out of 3 -- oh well.)
TarSeal Mon, November 21st, 2005, 07:39 AM Allright guys, I hit 4/5 fasted cardio's last week, along with 2 long LISS sessions, and 5/5 weight training sessions. I'll take it.
This week so far- 1/1 fasted cardio, 1 long LISS, and 1/1 weight training.
Honestly guys I'm just using this challenge to do well in the 12 week belly off challenge. I already used the quit smoking with me challenge to get ready for this challenge... I guess I'm a big user!
Justitia Mon, November 21st, 2005, 02:22 PM Travis: whatever works, works...that's all that matters. Congratulations on such a successful week.
I did the first of my AM cardio for this week today:
Cardio: 1/5
Justitia Wed, November 23rd, 2005, 01:09 PM Yesterday was a travel day so no exercise. But I went and did fasted cardio this morning.
TarSeal Fri, November 25th, 2005, 08:44 PM I am ashamed to say I only did 1 fasted cardio this week... When I do my walk tomorrow though, that will make 6 cardios and 5 weight training sessions. Still a good week, but I did not live up to the fasted cardio challenge... maybe next week I'll do better.:tucool:
Justitia Fri, November 25th, 2005, 11:58 PM No workout on Thanksgiving Day. More due to insomnia the night before than lack of opportunity. Did fasted cardio today but no weights. Gym closed early and I did not feel like going mid-day.
LoneStarChick Mon, November 28th, 2005, 11:42 AM Okay, I have been baaaad lately. I am back on track, and I have done 1/2 weight training sessions. Today I will do 1/2 HIIT, and that leaves 3/3 LISS for the week. I really need to get on the ball!!
TarSeal Tue, December 6th, 2005, 09:24 PM I did a fasted run this morning.:D
I'm failing miserably for the most part though on this challenge!
I've made a pact with myself to do the next 3 days in a row... plus cardio at night. 2-a-days!
Genetix Sat, December 10th, 2005, 12:51 AM I'm in. Fashionably laate.
Getting a head start before Christmas kicks me down like every year
*trudges off to fix treadmill unused for 6 months* :)

i'm late as well doh!!
anyway i'm trying to keep myself accountable, only tuesday and thursday i won't be able to do fasted next week as i have finals early in the morning and need the time to study
i've been doing fasted ever since starting SGX in august but occassionally my streak breaks, specially w/ school but no more excuses
Genetix Sat, December 10th, 2005, 01:37 AM no more excuses
Mine has been the treadmill thing for months  Should be a blast getting back in to it daily. Goodluck :tucool:
Justitia Sun, December 11th, 2005, 12:09 AM I would like to re-join this challenge, if it's OK with everyone. I am still working on my article but I am on the conclusion, my semester is over and now I have a month of grading ahead of me. But no more faculty meetings or stuff for a month now. So I can get back on a more regular schedule of working out.
My aim for the next month is to go 6 days a week and 7 if I can do it.
I went this morning and i am about to hit the sheets so I can get there at 8 Am when the gym opens tomorrow morning.
Good to see this thread keep going.
Genetix Sun, December 11th, 2005, 03:44 AM Best of luck Justitia! Let's see how far we can go, I'm a lot more inclined to do this every day if more people are fighting off the holidays along with me. Let's not give in this year!
LoneStarChick Sun, December 11th, 2005, 10:42 AM I'm a lot more inclined to do this every day if more people are fighting off the holidays along with me. Let's not give in this year!
I am all for that! I didn't fight off Thanksgiving too well, so I have to do this for Christmas. I did 40 mins of fasted cardio this morning on the treadmill. I think I will also do two-a-days this week on the days I am not doing weights. I definitely need a jump-start!
Justitia Sun, December 11th, 2005, 04:34 PM So I got my 45 minutes of fasted cardio in today....:tucool:
I'll count this as the start of the week:
Cardio: 1/6
TarSeal Sun, December 11th, 2005, 04:55 PM I did better last week and went 3/4 fasted cardio and got in 6 other cardio sessions after work.
I hope to hit 4 fasted cardio sessions this week and 5 cardio sessions after work.
RaqAttak Sun, December 11th, 2005, 06:54 PM Hey guys I'm a little late but any chance I could join up with you? I looooove doing cardio in the morning, makes me feel great for the rest of the day. I just sometimes have problems getting myself out of bed :P. BTW, I'm new here but does fasted mean you don't eat before, and is that really healthy? Just wondering because I'm not sure if I'll do fasted cardio every morning but I can for sure do cardio.
Genetix Sun, December 11th, 2005, 07:06 PM Fasted cardio is generally doing cardio on a completely empty stomach when you wake up, so that you don't just burn off your last meal, you get to that body fat this way. Mornings are optimal because With 7+ hours of no food, you can really hit that fat. 15+ minutes of HIIT or LISS is basically the minimum before your metabolism really kicks in. I've been starting out with 15-30 minutes myself, hopefully up to 45 like everyone else within a couple weeks.
RaqAttak Sun, December 11th, 2005, 08:03 PM My only fear is that it will burn off muscle. Does that happen at all?
Genetix Sun, December 11th, 2005, 08:44 PM Personally, It's been minimal muscle loss for me. Intake enough protein and it shouldn't be a problem unless you are competing in the strongman competition :p You can put on muscle and lose fat, if you compliment the cardio with strength training.
This is my understanding on it, if anyone can elaborate more, feel free to correct me.
#91 Sun, December 11th, 2005, 09:35 PM Mine has been the treadmill thing for months  Should be a blast getting back in to it daily. Goodluck :tucool:
here are mine
1) elliptical broke - didn't have any form of cardio other then bike riding for a month and it wasn't even fasted!! ironically, that time period had been the start of my best SGX progress (diet really kicked in high gear)
2) recumbant bike could not get my HR up for nothing and I didn't like it at all, this was in that month's time
3) finally bought a upright, took a couple days to get used to it but thats how I got back on and then the console breaks so I missed half a week since all I had left was the treadmill and I hate it!!
well now I'm waiting to get the replacement console for the bike in the meantime have been doing fasted cardio for a little over a week straight (even on my school day which calls for a 5 am wake up  ) and I don't intend on stopping anytime soon. I really want to get my cut over with as I'm getting tired of it and want to see muscle gains - I will say ever since doing it again, specially on the treadmill I have noticed a lot of visual progress for one week so I hope it can continue, I just want to keep myself from NOT finding ways around it and this thread is helping!!
good luck to you as well!! and everyone else
#91 Sun, December 11th, 2005, 09:38 PM My only fear is that it will burn off muscle. Does that happen at all?
I've been doing fasted cardio since August except for the time period I stated above and have made slight gains
#91 Sun, December 11th, 2005, 09:40 PM here's where I'm at so far
10 days
45 min/65-75% HR/average around 43 min inside my target zone
I also do cardio in the evening on my off days
Genetix Tue, December 13th, 2005, 04:11 AM 3/4 days, 15-20 minutes at 6-7 mph so far. Good start.
Genetix Wed, December 14th, 2005, 11:37 PM 5 out of 6 days, stepping it up to 20 minutes and 7 mph now
Hope you all are doing well too :claplow:
LoneStarChick Thu, December 15th, 2005, 07:55 AM Wow!! You guys are doing great!! Welcome, RaqAttak! I agree with Genetix. There should be little to no muscle loss as long as you continue to eat enough and have a good protein intake. From what I understand, it is when you do HIIT that you are more prone to muscle loss.
Well, I did 4/4 fasted cardio last week, but I forgot to post. My new week started yesterday, and I did fasted cardio and another cardio session in the evening. Today I will not do any cardio since I am doing legs. So, 1/4 fasted so far this week.
Justitia Thu, December 15th, 2005, 11:35 PM 45 minutes of fasted cardio today
2/6
(my $#@& article is done..but for a few edit clean-ups:jumping: )
Justitia Fri, December 16th, 2005, 12:12 PM Did 35 minutes today. My range is 35-45 minutes of fasted cardio so technically I am within my bounds. But even though I went to bed last night relatively early (for me anyway) I just could not get up this morning and I had an appointment.
So that is 3/6 for the week so far. Not too bad, given that my work was really interfering with my workouts this week.
#91 Fri, December 16th, 2005, 01:21 PM well I surprised myself and was able to get up on tuesday and thursday morning to do fasted cardio before finals!!
5 am wake up so I am proud of that as I absolutely hate waking up early :D
so far I'm up to 15 days in a row 45 minutes, 65-75% HR for about 42/45 minutes
PhillyGirl Sun, December 18th, 2005, 02:50 AM Hey Everybody,
I would like to join in on this challenge. I'm having a terrible time since it has gotten cold, I just want to sleep in. Gotta fight it!
Justitia-I was in a challenge with you many moons ago.
Justitia Sun, December 18th, 2005, 10:02 AM Hey Everybody,
I would like to join in on this challenge. I'm having a terrible time since it has gotten cold, I just want to sleep in. Gotta fight it!
Justitia-I was in a challenge with you many moons ago.
Yeah, I remember Philly Girl... Great to have you back.
I assume if you call yourself Philly Girl that you live in the Philly area. If you are feeling like sleeping a lot since it has gotten cold...you may be exhibiting signs of SAD's ... Seasonal Affective Disorder. I have it and it only comes out in the winter, because it is caused by less exposure to sunlight due to the the shorter days and a more cloudy days. And your particular body needs longer exposure to daylight each day. If it is the case, the only way to treat it (which I in fact do) is to get a special light box and sit before it for a certain length of time each day first thing in the AM. I do it while I am checking my e-mail and JSF. Then I keep it on after I come back from fasted cardio, while I fix and eat breakfast.
What happens to me as the days start to get shorter, if I don't do the light box is that, in addition to sleeping more or feeling tired and lethargic all the time, I start shifting my sleep schedule (my job allows me to control my time and place where I do most of my work--which is often at home). I start going to bed later and later and get up later and later. That's also common SAD's symptom. But the most important one is feeling sleepy all the time, sleeping a lot, feeling lethargic, not like doing anything. Also one might start feeling bits of depression, general blues, getting grumpy....a whole host of possibilities.
The thing is that it is really easy to diagnose and make go away. If it is SAD's and you use a light for about 2 weeks...all your symptoms will disappear. So the company I buy mine from makes a special deal. You buy it from them and you can use it for like 2-3 weeks and if your symptoms don't improve --- you can send the box back for a full refund, sometimes with a re-stocking fee of 10%.
If you decide to go that route, you have to be careful because there are a lot of disreputable or unknowledgable companies who sell light boxes but they don't emit the full broad band of light you need (it is to give the same broad band that the sun gives you -- which takes special lighting tubes.) The company I buy from is here in Maryland (Gaitersburg) and they will ship it to you for a small shipping charge, though sometimes they even waive that. But their boxes were design in concert with NIH (National Institute of Health --government agency). The person who helped them design it was the Dr. researcher at NIH who conducted the studies that confirmed that SAD's was a real disorder and not just some "new age" fantasy disease. Very well-known medical researcher, Dr. Charles Olsen.
It changed my life overnight. Within 3-4 days I noticed a difference, started having energy and optimism right away ...and everyone I referred to the company over the years, almost all of them had SAD's...and literally, their lives changed overnight. And they refer friends too. My former trainer, when she has clients and she sees the symptoms -- she also suggests the same because she sees tremendous improvement with their consistency and work-outs. I have been doing it for 10 years, and in the last couple of years I have gotten lackadasical...and my winters go really badly until I'm more consistent with keeping it on in the AM. I also find that as I get older I need a longer time, so over time, I have bought a couple of additional ones to make it easy for me to keep it on in different places of the house. I keep one right by my bed (where I also have my laptop and I check my morning mail... it is on right now.) I keep one in my kitchen and one where I usually do my work. But you need only one...they are a little cumbersome but pretty easy to move around,
Send me a PM and I can give you more details, if you are interested.
So I will be off to AM fasted cardio shortly for day 1/6...:D
Genetix Sun, December 18th, 2005, 10:13 AM Wow that's interesting Justitia... I might need one of those things, I've been sleeping 10+ hours daily (sometimes 12!) until lately I've been dragging myself to get up with 7-8. Always tired no matter what... And my schedules a wreck because 10 hours of sleeping + 16 hours awake doesn't equal 24 hours lol. So I go to bed a little later every time.
Glad you're joining PhillyGirl!
Anyway; so far I'm on day 7 or 8 in a row of morning cardio, it's nothing big - I just make sure I get my 20-30 minutes / 2+ miles every morning. Becoming a daily ritual.
You guys are really dedicated to this, very happy that I joined this challenge
Justitia Sun, December 18th, 2005, 10:21 AM Wow that's interesting Justitia...
What you are describing is exactly what causes th time shift in sleep..and if you fight against on your own, you just end up tired or sleepy or lethargic all the time..Send me a PM if you're interested. I refer so many people to this company, I can usually get them to cut a deal for people I refer if I call first and ask them to... but there is no obligation to follow through if you do... I just tell them your name and that you will call.
Disclosure...I DO NOT make one cent on referrals...I just do it b/c it's info I have and I like to share  , just like everyone else here on JSF...
Justitia Sun, December 18th, 2005, 06:26 PM Just posting to say I got my 40 minutes of fasted cardio in today.
SO for this week's start,
That is
Cardio: 1/6 :tu:
TarSeal Sun, December 18th, 2005, 08:24 PM I hope to hit 4 fasted cardio sessions this week and 5 cardio sessions after work.
All right lets see... I ended up 3/4 fasted cardio last week, and 5/5 regular cardio. I'll take it.
This week... I'm traveling starting Wednesday. I plan on fasted cardio Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at least. I should still be able to get in 5 regular cardios.
So far 1 regular cardio done.
PhillyGirl Mon, December 19th, 2005, 09:31 AM Yeah, I remember Philly Girl... Great to have you back.
I assume if you call yourself Philly Girl that you live in the Philly area.
Yes, I do live in Philadelphia. I'm not a girl though. I was trying to think of something catchy that I'd remember. My name is Christine, way too common and probably already taken.
Thanks for the info on the lamps. I did see it advertised somewhere and it sounded like a good idea. Thanks for volunteering, if I ever purchase one I'll be sure to pick your brain.
Genetix, I also get lots of sleep. I don't work on the weekend, so I literally sleep until my body seems to get tired of lying down.
Fasted cardio completed for today for almost an hour. Yay me!
This week 1/5. If I do 6 days, it will be icing on the cake.
Chris
PhillyGirl Tue, December 20th, 2005, 06:52 AM Something is wrong with the world if I was the only one that worked out yesterday.
I got my am workout in today.:claplow: See ya tomorrow
2/5
#91 Sat, December 24th, 2005, 05:57 PM my streak ended at 15 days, my new streak is at 4 days, undecided if I will do fasted or not tomorrow depends on sleep tonight I guess
also using the upright bike now - 45 min staying a bit out of my range as I'm still getting used to it about 40/45 in target zone of 65-75% HR
