I have always done around the belly button as you mentioned.

I've seen two different spots where two different websites measure the "waist". The first and most common is, as you suggest, with the tape level across the belly button. This typically wraps itself around the largest circumference of the love handles too.

The second place I've seen called the "waist" is in the smaller area just below the bottom rib, but above the love handles. In these cases, the measurement across the belly button is referred to as the "abdomen" measurement from what I've seen.

I think the former location is far more common than the latter. It seems as though it is typically used for calculations such as body fat percentage and such. It's an important one if you are overweight.

Cheers, and HTH,
Heavy

Another way that wouldn't produce your best bragging measure, but would be good to fllow progress.

No sucking it up - a relaxed un-flexed measurement taken at three points and averaged:

1" above navel
At navel
1" below navel

I've always been confused about it too, but I just take both measurements (at the navel and around the abdomen at the smallest part) to have an idea of where I'm at. Of course, I know the measurement at the navel is more important for me because I have a little belly, whereas my abdomen area is flat.

If you want to use the waist to hip ratio, get two results by using both measurements, again, to have an idea of where your body fat level is at in the abdomen.

Hope this is of some help!
