View Full Version : Knee/shin injury
cam Sun, October 30th, 2005, 09:02 PM I ve recently played 5 asise football and afterwards i get a pain in my left knee - but its more at the top of my shin, and theres a small bump but not very noticable.
It hurts most when i stand on one leg and squat - but i dont know if ive just been kicked or if its from repeated shock from running alot. My brother had Osgood Schlatters i really hope its not that.
Anyone else ever had this feeling??
tahnks in advance

Are you a little old to get Osgood Schlatters? One of my brothers had that but none of the rest of us got it. And he went on to be quite active and fit.
Have you considered that you might have shin splints?

I thought of shin splints too, but i checked that out

but the pain is more lateral than medial

im sad to say but u do have osgood shlautter. i have it also, and it hurts after i squat, it hurts so much i have ice my knee down. i just recently bought these knee wraps especially for osgood shlatter, they look like rings that go around that part of the leg.
bklyns ant Sat, November 5th, 2005, 09:41 AM i hurt my right knee about 1 year ago on an incline leg press machine. i have just been diagnosed with "patellar chondromalacia". "patellar chondromalacia" is when the cartlidge under the patellar (knee cap) rips or is worn down and then rips. due to the rip in the cartlidge when u extend ur leg the bone in ur leg rubs aginst ur knee cap and makes a scratching sound, like scratching the cement with a rock. THE INCLINE LEG PRESS MACHINE IS VERY DANGEROUS, IF U HAVE TO USE IT DO NOT BEND UR KNEES TOO FAR BACK BEND THE ONLY AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. this is a warning, do what u want but a bad knee is the absolute last thing u want. by the way im only 15 years old
Dew Sat, November 5th, 2005, 10:52 AM Cam. what is your age? OSD is common in middle school aged children because it occurs when your femur is growing too rapidly for your quad. As a result, the muscles of your quad get stretched and pull on the attachment site. Since they attach on your tibial tuberosity (just below your knee) they begin to pull away, and your body's reaction to prevernt that is to make more bone there (calcify). Thus, you are left with a large, odd looking bony prominence. However, if you have stopped growing, then this process is very unlikely to happen.
If it was OSD, you could still continue to be active as much as you can tolerate the pain. No surgury or anything is necessary.
It's hard to say what you may have without getting into further questioning, and perhaps by now (almost a week later) it has cleared up? It could be patellar tendonitis, a brusing, ect. Give me an update of your current condition and I can help you out further.

Hey Dew - Im 22 so OSD is probably ruled out, i didnt know what age it usually stopped occuring and was just fearful as my younger bro had it and he had to stop alot of exercise.
Its not cleared up but the pain doesnt usually happen till after exercise or maybe when i run up the stairs with big strides for example i can feel it. Theres no bruise but can feel a slight lump underneath the skin but its not visible.
Its usually after 5 a side football so i dont know whether its from the regular kicks i get, or whether it was from playing on a very hard surface 2-3 times a week.
The sore bit is the top 1/5th or so of the tibia, towards the outside.
Dew Sun, November 6th, 2005, 10:57 AM Just based on the fact that it bothers you after physical activity makes me believe it may be some tendonitis of some sorts. As far as of what I'm not sure. The point sounds too inferior and lateral for your patellar tendon, and too inferior for IT Band, but IT band is my best guess at this point.
Tendonitis tends to bother people after they are done working out, playing, ect once the tendon has become inflammed. You may try stretching your IT band before and after playing and see if that helps.
The easiest way to stretch it (its rather a hard spot to get to) is just to stand, cross your legs, and lean away from the painful side. This will stretch the IT at the hip. Also, lay on the ground, cross your leg so your ankle is on your opposite knee and pull your straight leg to your chest (thus bringing the crossed leg with it). This can sometimes get the IT band at the knee.
cam Sun, November 6th, 2005, 06:19 PM cheers dew............it sounds complicated but il try what you described!
Dew Sun, November 6th, 2005, 07:39 PM Best of luck, let me know how you do.
cam Thu, November 10th, 2005, 06:56 PM Just had 5aside and its still hurting as did before, even though i did those stretches you recommended......Im beginning to think its some sort of bruise? I remember taking a big kick about 2-3 weeks ago, but can this bruising last so long? The lumps seems more prominent after exercise, but is definetley feeling painful to press, rather than if it was a pulled tendon or something.
If it is just a bad bruise, am i right in thinking it will heal.....its just a matter of time??!!
Dew Fri, November 11th, 2005, 01:38 PM Well your situation is getting a little interesting. Based on where you say it hurts, it sounds very near where the IT band attaches, but that doesn't explain much about why there is a lump/bump there.
Does it hurt to move your leg? Or just to press on it? What do you do that causes it to hurt?
There are some other muscles in that region such as your ant. tib, and peroneals. Does it hurt to roll your foot laterally/outward (eversion)? does it hurt to bring your foot up to the sky, as if to stand on your heels?
It sounds like this is not going to be related to your knee because of the locatoin. Lateral, proximal shin area correct?
A bruise could last this long, but it should be feeling a little better by now. It's been 2 weeks since the original injury?

Yes the area you ve said is right......Im more and more thinking its just a bad bruise as it hurts the most when pressed, but can feel a bit of pain when i press off it when the knee is bent 90 degrees or so. Ive eliminated squats all together, but the pain seems to reoccur after running?? Im assuming it will fad with rest and less exercise
Dew Sun, November 13th, 2005, 07:18 PM Yeah I am thinking it's probably just a bruise. Whether bone or muscle I am not sure. Could easily be on the bone, beneath the muscle and whenever you push off you are rubbing that muscle over the bruise. Give it some rest, and ice it for 15 minutes on and off whenever you can.
