View Full Version : Do Vitamins make you sick
mwarren19 Wed, March 10th, 2004, 11:40 PM I take a GNC multi vitamin (Mega Men) and I have never had problems with them. I bought my wife the Mega Women ones and she has been sick to her stomach. I thought it would be something else making her sick but she was on the message board at work and posted this topic and people said they have gotten sick from them ( vitamins in general). So I am going to post it here and see what you guys think. She said she takes them with food like it says. Has anyone has problems with multi-vitamins???
FionaMaeve Thu, March 11th, 2004, 12:03 AM I feel sick if I don't take them with food. But you said that she is taking them with food. . .
Has she tried just taking one half with one meal and the other half with another meal?
chops Thu, March 11th, 2004, 12:38 AM i've never had a problem. i don't know exacts, but some high levels of vitamins can be toxic if it's non water soluable (or something like that).
you can try switching her to another brand and see what happens. probably additional stuff in the gnc brand, hence the "mega" in the name and maybe it's the extra stuff that disagrees with her.

Be careful with the GNC Vitamins. They tend to be a little too potent. Generally you can handle large doses of water soluble vitamins, (most of your antioxidents), but your fat soluble ones (A, D )and and some minerals (iron) can be really toxic in the doses I have seen in some multis. Plus GNC is expensive.
LiveWire Thu, March 11th, 2004, 10:13 AM I usually take take my vitamins halfway through breakfast, otherwise that make me sick to my stomach.
TheHamburgler Thu, March 11th, 2004, 03:52 PM Most multi vitamins have WAY over the RDA amount....and yes taking to much vitamins can make you sick and even make your hair fall out. You can get all the vitmains you need from food, or just take a Flinstones kids chewable vitamin that usually has enough vitmains in it. :tu:
Ken In Canada Thu, March 11th, 2004, 03:58 PM I've seen most people swear by the "MEGA MEN'S" at GNC. I know that things like "Centrum" are just plain hanged in the fitness/nutrition world. I'm trying to finish off a bottle of Jamieson's POWER Vitamins For Men (which the wife got for me). I've never liked Jamieson's stuff. I'm off after work to check out the Canadian prices on the MM's.
I just need a decent multi-vitamin!
Recommendations?

GM Enthusiast Thu, March 11th, 2004, 05:46 PM I do have a problem if I take vitamins on a completely empty stomach. Over time I determined the problem was with Zinc. Seems my stomach doesn't like the stuff much. My solution now is to always take vitamins after a meal. I almost never feel sick when I do that.
:: kna :: Thu, March 11th, 2004, 06:09 PM I do wonder what the difference is in peoples requirements from Vits.. I take a pretty basic one-a-day which gives me 100% RDA of the essentials, just to keep me at, well my RDA!. Are these power Vits massively over the RDA then, which differentiates them from other standard brands? If so, I can see why people may get sick on them.
The only Vit I go over the RDA on is C, which is generally accepted anyway.
