Has anyone else been having problems with the stability of Large SATA drives?
A few months ago (july 2005) I had to replace my new SATA 250GB harddrive. Seems I have to replace my replacement harddrive after only 3 months of use.
This is just insane! I dont know if Maxtor just sucks when it comes to large drives or I just have shitty luck, either way, I'm really not impressed.
I think instead of just filling up an RMA and getting another replacement drive, I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what else can be done for this. I dont want to be changing my drive every 3 months.
But has anyone else had the same type of problem? Or maybe purchased a different brand and hasn't had any of these problems with their large drive? Or maybe someone has a suggestion about which company I should purchase next time?

I have a 180g seagate that I have had no problems with.
It seems a bit unusual because I have always had good luck with Maxtor. WD on the other hand I have had problems with.

I second that, I put in a 120g Seagate from BestBuy and have had no problems so far. I could have gotten a 200g Western Digital for about the same price but I saw it had some negative reviews on the net.

I put a WD Raptor 74 gig SATA into my custom rig as part of the original build and just about pulled my hair out over the damn thing. Windows did not recognise the drive and I was forced to go through every conceivable reason why my rig wasn't working. I was rewiring every thing for days and messing with bios... I even got rid of Windows Media Edition for XP Pro... nothing worked... Finally, I popped a seagate non sata in there and noooo problem. I really wanted that 10k rpm's though.

I have 3 300gb seagate drives (I am an editor) in no raid configuration - and they have been nothing but great....but now you all have me worried!
I used to have 2 500gb firewire2 ext drives, but those sucked, so now those back up my server.

I've had a 300Gb Maxtor SATA drive that's been working fine since January.
Mind you I had one of the infamous IBM 'Deathstar' drives for over 3 years and never once had a problem with it - maybe I'm just lucky with HDs :d_smile:

Not trying to HiJack the thread but I have three servers with about 150GB to back up on a nightly basis. What does everyone think is the best way these days?
