View Full Version : Protein Shakes....ack!
Liam19 Wed, March 10th, 2004, 11:07 AM My order of whey protein came today.
I'd read that when bulking I should use milk for mixing.
So I did this. I was quite surprised by the volume increase.
So I tried some and it tasted okay, a bit bland tho.
But I only got to about 3 or 4 sips and I couldn't take any more.
I feel like I'm going to throw up. I have real bad hiccups.
Please tell me this isn't normal.
I think maybe it's 'cos I used milk. Milk is gross. I hate it.
I normally have trouble keeping it down, it makes me feel ill.
But it's never this bad!!! :(
--D-- Wed, March 10th, 2004, 11:15 AM What flavor did you get?
MYBAD? Wed, March 10th, 2004, 11:16 AM If you're bulking put some peanut butter in there before you blend. I always whack a whole banana in mine with some peanut butter and it tastes lovely.
I had to experiment with some different flavours/companies of whey protein before I found one that suited my taste.
Also bear in mind that some taste better with water, some with milk.
Liam19 Wed, March 10th, 2004, 12:25 PM NutriSport Whey Protein Isolate Chocolate
1000g :/
I'll try the banana thing.
Not so sure about peanut butter tho.
I just tried a sip with water.
Not much better.
Specialbear Wed, March 10th, 2004, 12:31 PM did u blend it? Use 1 banana, some sugar-substitute, and a bit of Gatorade and ice to make it real good.
karatetricker Wed, March 10th, 2004, 12:37 PM My Optimum Nutrition shakes taste like they are from Baskin Robins.
I make the Chocolate Mint with skim milk and ice in a blender
I make the Chocolate with skim milk, ice and 1 tbsp peanut butter or 1/2 frozen banane in a blender.
Never had NutriSport, but ON is amazing!
goldenegg Wed, March 10th, 2004, 01:22 PM Another recommendation for ON shakes! They taste great in both milk and water.
Liam19 Wed, March 10th, 2004, 01:34 PM So it's okay to put lots of other stuff in with it?
Liam19 Wed, March 10th, 2004, 03:31 PM Hey actually, I'd like to try these OH shakes.
I'll be in NYC for a month from the 31st of March.
Where can I get them while I'm there?
Should I buy online? Chocolate mint sounds good <g>
Thx.
zamboni Wed, March 10th, 2004, 03:43 PM I hate thick shakes, I can chug 40 grams of whey in water in about 2 seconds. Maybe not the best way to do it, but it works for me.
Josh137 Wed, March 10th, 2004, 03:59 PM Another recommendation for ON shakes! They taste great in both milk and water.
Yep, the ON [Optimum Nutrition] is good. I haven't tried the other flavors because I like the Vanilla so much. I do a scoop or more in a cup of skim, love it, shaken not stirred. :tu:
SCHTEEVIE Wed, March 10th, 2004, 04:01 PM different brands will taste different - there are some great tasting ones - and if you don't like milk (which is arguably not good for mixing whey as it slows it down anyway) then use water.
bottom line - experiment until you find what you like.
I personally hate sweetners, so I get non flavored whey isolate and flavor it myself.
but to be honest - lately I have gotten pretty hardcore with my PWO shake.
I just put the not flavored whey in a cup of water, stir with with a spoon and chug it lumps and all. (no shaker cup or blender to wash, and my PWO whey is in my stomach 10 mintues after my workout.)
I just don't care about enjoying the PWO shake when I am in a hurry.
my post work out food routine is:
get home from gym - preheat oven - chug tasteless water shake, throw chicken or fish in oven, take shower while it cooks, and then eat "real food" meal after my shower (20-30 minutes after PWO whey shake).
Liam19 Wed, March 10th, 2004, 04:41 PM How much shake should I make.
The label says to take 40g of powder and make a paste with water, then dilute. I guess I could just make a small galss to swallow all at once. Then I could drink a few glasses of water after.
My stomach is still unsettled. I've had hiccups all day :(
nc Wed, March 10th, 2004, 04:52 PM I agree with the others who say Optimum Nutrition powder is good.
I've tried the Pro Complex in strawberry and the 100% whey in chocolate. Both are the best I've ever tasted and the Pro Complex has 27.5g of protein in a scoop.
It is more expensive than, say, Designer, but I hate that stuff.
I'd like to try AST's protein powder some time (anybody know why it's so freaking expensive?) and AllTheWhey... but ON is more than good enough for me.
Revlis Wed, March 10th, 2004, 05:21 PM The best protein powder is Biotests Low Carb Grow! Chocolate flavour!
Pure heaven in a glass (w/water). It costs a little more than most but if you're lactose intolerant then it's perfect.
J-Man Wed, March 10th, 2004, 06:26 PM another way to get that shake mix down is to put it into oatmeal and eat it with a little cinnamon, or just add verylittle liquid so you can finish it with one gulp, you can always drink plain water to wash it down with.

I gotta disagree with you on the strawberry opinion. I started out with a 5lb tub of chocolate mint after somebody recommended it here and it is fantastic. Then, lat week, I ordered 2 pd tubs of double chocolate and strawberry just to experiment. The double chocolate is incredible, highly recommended...but the strawberry is horrible in my opinion. Tastes very 'chemically" if that makes any sense. It's drinkable, I'm not going to throw it away or anything, but I won't buy strawberry again.
LiveWire Thu, March 11th, 2004, 09:18 AM I don't like the way the protein shake foams up in the blender. I mix mine in a shaker with water, ice and a packet worth of splenda. Then while i work out, I let it sit in the refrigerator to lose the bubbles and fully disolve and it is great.
Jingo Thu, March 11th, 2004, 09:31 AM i drink mine fully bubbleified! 300ml becomes about 800ml (and that's in mainly water!, i do 100ml milk/200ml water mix) so i pour half, down, half again, down
then the huge burp! :D
TheRyanator Thu, March 11th, 2004, 02:03 PM When it comes to protein powders there are so many different options as we can all see from this posting. Lots of different ways (not wheys) to make it, mix it etc...
The most important thing is that you take time to try several different ways of ingestion. Find one or two that you like and stick to it. The reason it is important to find one that you like is so that you dont CHUG the whole drink in two seconds. The body digests protein best and most efficiently when it is introduced into the digestion system gradually. The recommended consumption time for a typical sized protein shake would be 15-30 minutes. So have fun, find something that you like and that satisfies a craving and make your protein consumption as efficient and productive as possible. I have tasted Protein shakes that taste like chalk and have also had ones that taste like they are from an ice cream shop  (as referenced earlier by KarateTricker)
I prefer the banana, vanilla whey and pnt btr. Its the best, and great for muscle recovery! :tu:
Liam19 Fri, March 12th, 2004, 08:37 AM Yatta ze!
I bought some peppermint essence, some splenda and some unsweetened cocoa to mix with my protein drink. I only used a little water too, and made sure it wasn't bubbly. Had no problems this time ^_^. Tasted quite nice actually!!
