it depends what your tastes are.

since i have many many tastes, when i want to relax, i'll listen to:
+ nora jones
+ 2pac
+ dave matthews
+ redman
+ john mayer

pretty much any song by these artists will be good quality.

This might sound kinda weird, but:

Isis
Leviathon
Behemoth
RJD2
lots of others

Although most of these are metal, I find that they are very relaxing to me. Isis is in my opinion perfect to chill to.

When it comes to chilling music, my go-to guy is Stevie Wonder.

Not 80s "That's What Friends Are For" or "I Just Called to Say I Love You" Stevie Wonder - top-of-his-game Stevie Wonder from back in the day. Innervisions. Songs in the Key of Life. That Stevie Wonder.

Generally, I find Stevie Wonder better when I'm hanging out with other people (singular or plural) than when I'm hanging out by myself, but when I'm by myself, I don't tend to "chill."

Yes, depends on what you define as 'chillin' music. But hands down, my vote goes for Diana Krall. She is my favorite artist. Vocal jazz singer/pianist. GREAT stuff. If you need recommendations on which Cd's just let me know. :D

Air, Ane Brun, Atjazz, Coldplay, Damien Rice, De-Pazz, Fila Brazilla, Four Tet, Goldfrapp, Koop, Lamb, Lemon Jelly, Morcheeba, Nick Drake, Norah Jones, Portishead, Teitur, Thievery Corporation, Zero 7.

The two swedes: Jens Lekman and José Gonzáles are two personal singer songwriter favorites.

I like slow music, lo-fi, chill. There are alot of good collections to, look for chillout, lounge.

I agree. IMHO, the best chillout ever created:

www.naked-music.com

particularly, the solo albums by Miguel Migs, and the Carte Blanche series.

Yeah! Stevie! Songs like "I Wish" and "Superstition"... Classic.
Marvin Gaye too. You'll find some good chill tracks there.

Newer artists:
Try D'Angelo (his first album/CD)
Adriana Evans (VERY overlooked neo-classic soul artist)
and Rahsaan Patterson.

There's more, but then I'd have to start diggin' in the crates.

These 3 are all aussies so I'm not sure how hard they would be to find. Also check out Donavon Frankenreiter. :tu:

You have not "chilled" until you have listened to DJ Shadow - Endtroducing.

Trust me on this. Don't think "oh lol techno" based on the "DJ" in his name - it's far from it. Drum and bassy, sample-driven instrumental hip-hop is the closest I can come to classifying it, but that still doesn't really do a good job. It needs to be heard to be understood. It is one of my favorite releases of the 90's (and ever, for that matter).

A new band I have enjoyed listening to is Avenged Sevenfold.

They are along the lines of a Rock Ballad band and though it is more like Dream Theater than Coldplay if you like listening to music when you are chilling to appreciate musical ability I would recommend checking them out. They go from rockin out into slower melo-dramatic pieces very well, it is really a very diverse and pleasurable listening experience.

Interesting thread. I was chillin' last night and here was my playlist:

Chris De Burgh - Borderline
Billy Klippert - Levon
Bruce Hornsby - Mandolin Rain
Diana Krall & The Chieftains - Danny Boy
Dixie Chicks & James Taylor - Carolina In My Mind
The Eagles - Dirty Laundry
Genesis - Thowing It All Away
Greatful Dead - Touch Of Grey
Jewel - Sweet Home Alabama
Michael Buble - Home
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Robert Palmer - Mercy Mercy Me
Sarah McLachlan - Building a Mystery
Sarah Harmer - Basement Apartment

I get into certain musical 'fits' every now and then. For some reason, I will spend countless hours researching the artist(s) to learn more about "why" a particular song was written -- what were the circumstances that warranted the artist to sit down and write the song? Did the artist personally experience some event during his/her life that caused such an impact or moved them so much (or fundamentally changed them forever) that they went off and wrote a song about it. I know, I'm weird...

There was a while there a few years back where I was really into Phil Collins. Then I got into Robert Palmer (RP RIP (http://www.robertpalmer.com/)). Then I got into Chris De Burgh. Then I got really into Blue Rodeo (http://www.bluerodeo.com/). Then Sarah Harmer, Van Halen (or Van Hagar as I like to call them), Genesis, and a whole host more.

Looking through my collection of tunes on my PC, I think I have more live acoustic recordings that anything else. I love the live ambience and the ad hoc style of live acoustic music.

Juno Reactor -- Beyond the Infinite
Juno Reactor -- Bible of Dreams
Quicksilver Messenger Service -- Happy Trails
Sphongle -- Tales of the Inexpressible

I've been chilling to these albums lately.

Check out the song "Cavalry" on QMS -- the guitar is absolutely amazing and the song is incredibly emotional in an atmospheric way. It gives me major mind pictures. Off of the JR albums, pay particular attention to the tracks: Guardian Angel, Rotorblade, Jardin de Cecile, God Is God. Rotorblade and God Is God especially blow my mind. For straight up relaxing music, you have to look to Sphongle. It's ambient with goa/psy and all kinds of crazy influences (salsa and trip hop particularly come to mind).

JR and Sphongle are electronic music based, BTW. QMS is just good old psychedelic rock.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Explosions in the Sky. They are a great band that are pretty soft, but with a lot of crescendos and climaxes that just make them simply amazing(i hate using that word to describe bands). All of their albums are really good but I would recommend downloading their self-titled cd first and giving them a listen. I have not heard of one person who didn't like them.
