I fell off my program several months ago after some personal setbacks. Not making an excuse, but life happens. A couple of weeks ago I decided to get my butt in gear again and got back with my original program of 3 days weights and short cardio, 2 days long cardio.
Anyway, last week I went to get an eye exam because I was noticing some degraded vision in my left eye. During the eye exam they took my blood pressure. First time I've had it checked in a number of years. It was 145/101. The doctor thought it was a mistake and they took it again, 144/102. They suggested I get it checked by my physician.
Took me awhile to get an appointment (changed HMO's and no one could find my medical records), and I checked my pressure every other day at the local pharmacy. Regularly mid 140's over low 100's. I also stopped working out after reading about people having strokes while working out with undiagnosed hypertension.
Finally saw the doctor today, blood pressure was 148/108. He put me on meds, told me to make sure I wasn't taking any energy enhancing supplements, and to continue with my diet and workout routine, with moderate levels of exertion.
So I've been trying to figure out what "moderate exertion" means...is it determined by heart rate, fatigue, what? I'm 34 years old, weigh 225lbs, and have high blood pressure. I tried searching the internet for some examples of good build up programs that weren't "dangerous" for people in my situation and found nada.
Anyone have any suggestions, experience or links they could provide to get me on the right track? In the meantime, I'm planning on sticking to a brisk walk on the treadmill keeping my heartrate between 130 and 150.
Thanks.
