If its just a cold I say go for it. If you really have the flu you'd probably be too sick to even consider working out ie: puking, dizzy, fever, chills, headache... If you could ask the question you can workout.

I think that if you feel your body needs the rest then that's what you should do.

Personal thing. Your energy will be split up between repairing muscle fibers and producing white cells (to fight infection)....so both are going to take longer and recovery from either won't be optimal.
My rule of thumb is:
stuffy nose, head cold type stuff....yeah sure workout.
flu/virus....sweats, fever, muscular ache....don't bother, get your rest and get over your bug.
You have your life to work out. Your body will probably like a couple of days off any way.

I never workout with any signs of illness. All it has got me in the past is more ill and a delayed recovery. Not worth the one hour I spent in the gym trying to power through it.

I agree with karatekicker. If I start feeling sick I'll usually do something physical, be it my workout or other activity, and see how my body reacts. The vast majority of the time I feel crappier afterward, and I take that as a hint to lay off until I'm well. I just try and get lots of sleep, drink lots of water, and load up on Vitamin C.
