Any idea if the guy seriously hurt from this mishap? doordude42 Thu, September 22nd, 2005, 09:14 AM Any idea if the guy seriously hurt from this mishap? That's definetely gonna leave a mark! seoulnewfie Thu, September 22nd, 2005, 09:38 AM That's sick. But it reminded me of a question I had meant to ask after watching MNF. They had a segment showing Larry Allen BPing 700LBS. But it looked like the guy had 3~5 spotters. How is it that they can say "he can BP 700LBS" if he needs spotters and still only does it once with what looked like A LOT of help from those spotters. Mind you, I would never get it off the rack! :o So hats off to him for that much. justingodin Sat, September 24th, 2005, 07:25 PM That's sick. Good for them for acheiving a goal they set, but their bodies won't hold up forever. So I hope that 700 pound bench press and 800 pound "squat" was worth it. Also what went wrong in that clip? It sort of seems like his wrist gave out. I guess it wasn't meant to hold that much weight... chicanerous Sat, September 24th, 2005, 08:00 PM The body of the guy who's never lifted a weight in his life isn't going to hold up forever either. Existance is meaningless unless you give it a purpose. Timbermiko Mon, September 26th, 2005, 01:25 AM It's all silly basically. Why do any of those guys do what they do? Or his shirt failed him Haban Mon, September 26th, 2005, 09:43 AM Or his shirt failed him That's exactly why ALL equipment is EVIL. Belts, straps, everything. I find it incredibly stupid to eliminate the weakest link with UNNATURAL means instead of strengthening the weak muscle(s). TheRyanator Mon, September 26th, 2005, 10:44 AM UGGH. I just do not understand those guys. I mean, yeah, they can lift some large amounts of weight, but 9 out of 10 of them are so overweight they would be considered obese...I would not trade being able to lift that kind of weight for being relatively strong and still look and feel like I was in good shape. Despite being "obsese", they're also so strong they could deadlift 3.5+ of themselves off the floor, squat with 3+ of themselves on their back, and bench press 2.5+ of themselves. :tucool: Yes, provided they are using their shirts and suits and wraps, but removing those makes their numbers by no means unimpressive. There are many olympic lifters who weigh 200+ lbs and have a 35+ inch vertical jump! Did you know the average division 1 basketball player has only a 28" vert*? When these powerlifters and strongmen cut away the fat, what do you see? Something that, to the untrained eye, is almost indistinguishable from a bodybuilder's physique, yet still insanely strong. Fat, aesthetically, is nothing more than a superficial layer that hides your muscularity -- it does not contribute to strength. If you're as strong as a powerlifter, you have to have great muscularity in order to possess that level of strength. To think otherwise or forget what's hiding under that layer of fat is just plain ignorant. Check out this article for a few examples of powerlifters and strongmen who have shed their fat: http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=727966 *http://faccioni.com/Reviews/VJperformance.htm Mick Mauldin Wed, September 28th, 2005, 08:02 AM Personally, I would rather be ripped than fat. I would rather "look good with my shirt off" and if that means I can't lift 700lbs, oh well. :p Everyone has their own goals, I just don't understand why ppl. would want to be a powerlifter, "aka strong as an ox but fat as hell!.  NewSkin Mon, October 3rd, 2005, 02:20 AM Personally, I would rather be ripped than fat. Many sports and physical activities can be detrimental to one's aesthetics. For instance, running long distances can burn off muscle. |
