View Full Version : would this diet work ?
cubs730 Mon, September 19th, 2005, 12:23 AM im 5'7..about 155 pounds now [ not sure But I think 22 % bf..just started lifting 2 weeks ago again..I still have fat mostly around my belly area... So i want to lose around 15-20 pounds more of fat but i dont want to lose any muscle/plus maybe gain some ?
would this work out..
I read about a diet of eating pretty much only tuna..like 4-5 cans a day..plus fat burning sups and stuff.
but what if I do that, Tuna, and I add 2 protien shakes.
Would the protien shakes and tuna + lifting keep me from losing muscle..and will i lose fat only doing this ?
or do i really need a full diet like adding chicken..etc..to keep from losing Muscle.
1FastGTX Mon, September 19th, 2005, 12:28 AM No, this is a bad idea. You need more carbs and fat than this.
At the very, very least, add fat to those protein shakes you want to take. And then have carbs pre and post workout.
At the very, very least.
SwoleCat Mon, September 19th, 2005, 12:38 AM I agree with the above, there is much more to a solid/intelligent approach for the goals you have set.

Can I just have like..the instant oatmeal for breakfast and something else with carbs..thats enough for carbs for the day ? or do i really need to add carbs pre and post workout ?

adding oatmeal for the morning is fine.... but you need carbs pre and post workout as well... this is one of the most important times to get carbs if you are lifting and cutting.
do not neglect this. your body needs carbs to use as energy for lifting purposes and it also needs carbs for muscle building purposes.
karatetricker Mon, September 19th, 2005, 10:20 AM If it were as easy as 4-5 cans/tuna per day, don't you think everyone would do it?
Sounds like a bad attempt at Atkins to me.
I suggest you check out the Nutition sticky up top this forum and see where to get your food sources from. What ratios you use is up to you, several will work, but make sure, as has been said, to consume carbs around your workouts at the very least. I recommend more.
Eat healthy fats: peanut butters, nuts, fish, fish oil, olive oil, etc.
Vary your protein sources. Besides, 4-5 cans/tuna per day is boring as hell and the mercury level may be worth considering.

That's it tuna, fat burning sups and stuff???? Bad idea.
You need a complete diet. Carbs, fats and protein.
Make your carbs sources slow burning which are good for you: oats, brown rice, barely, sweet potatos, bran cereals that sort of thing
Protein:
lean meats: chicken, fish, turkey, extra lean beef (occassionally), game meat (buffalo, deer, ostrich) skim milk, egg whites
fats: say one yolk/day, nuts (almonds, peanuts, walnuts etc...) seeds, olive oil, fish oil
veggies (vitamins, minerals, fiber)
a piece or 2 of fruit: grapefruit, apples, pears, berries
Plug it all in to free nutritional tracker ( nutridiary.com or fitday.com ) to see how many calories you take in to maintain your current weight and then start playing with the numbers. You can ask here for further advice. Check out the stickies on how to lose.

1FastGTX Mon, September 19th, 2005, 02:31 PM I'm not trying to be mean, but you really sound lazy. Why don't you just come out and admit it, and say "look, I'm lazy, how can I lose fat while doing the least amount of work?"
I can understand the desire to keep it simple. Believe me I don't want to spend all day in the kitchen. But tuna, tuna, tuna, tuna, tuna, instant oatmeal, protein powder, and fat burning supplements do not make a good diet by themselves. I think you should research some. I will come back and try to help you later when I get time (gotta go make some chicken! hehe).
Oats in the morning are fine. If possible I'd go with real oats and not instant oatmeal but hey if you're just starting out it's better than nothing (and it sure tastes better). I'd also go for carbs pre and post workout though, it really does add a lot.

Ok I'm back. :) Anyway are you still there? Have you made any further progress or decisions? We are here to help you...
It's not just carbs that you are lacking, it's also fats I think.
You don't HAVE to add carbs pre and post workout, but I find it to be really the best time of day to have them. I also like to have some in the morning as well, personally, but it depends on my lifting and cardio schedule at the time.

That must be what an eskimo's cardio consists of: kayaking from the north pole to the south pole to catch penguins!
Eating a clean diet for them mostly means not eating yellow snow. ;)
