View Full Version : Maltodextrin
neptuneL38 Sat, September 10th, 2005, 10:21 PM the most solid PWO meal as i understand it, is a mix of protein, dextrose and maltodextrin
do i buy maltodextrin online? perhaps someone could explain this maltodextrin to me- im puzzled
Edit: been reading more- is oatlmeal a good source of maltodextrin. is maltodextrin a long word for a complex carb ? was this post useless
edit2: what would be a good ratio for a post workout meal. do i keep the 2-1 on carb to protein like, 40 grams protein 30grams dextrose and 10grams maltodextrin? or do i do the maltodextrin separately from orignal 2-1 protein to dextrose ratio. what do you guys do ?

To the best of my knowledge maltodextrin is made from corn.
It is available on-line. I buy mine from bodybuilding.com. It's called Carbo Gain by NOW products. I use a 2:1 ratio. 30gP/47gMalto/13gdex.
or thereabouts. Individual preferrences vary.

just a question, why do you use 47malto and 13- why not the other way around- from what i read dex is a simpler sugar than malto, and isn't that what our bodies need after a workout ?

I believe 13g of dex is enough to ensure the required insulin spike. That's 5 full tsp.
1FastGTX Sun, September 11th, 2005, 12:17 AM I like running 50/50 dex/malto personally. :)
(Warning: malto does not taste like dex at all...more like chalk.)

Just too damn sweet for my taste. Besides, as I said I don't think it's nessessary. Just the thought of all that dex makes me cringe! :d_eek:
krosspyder Sun, September 11th, 2005, 02:29 AM okay... basic question here... sorry... but what does malto do?
and if dont get it straight like you guys... where else can i get it from... oatmeal or something? something i can buy locally... not online.
what does malto do? is it a complex carb or a simple carb or what?
i know dex is a simple carb/sugar it aides in spiking insulin levels which is primary right after lifting... so how does malto fit in?
if i cant get malto what can i use instead?
im using sprees to get my dex post workout.
Hort Sun, September 11th, 2005, 08:19 AM Maltodextrin is a complex carb that behaves like a simple carb but it still must be processed through the liver so you get prolonged digestion and replenishment. It's derived from corn starch. Dextrose is glucose, a simple carb also from corn that can be absorbed straight from the gut into the blood.
People experiment with combos of both in varying ratios. For some people, too much dextrose can lead to increased fat storage while maltodextrin may only cause a slight increase in water weight.
I also use the NOW carbo gain for malto and get it from BN.... WAY cheap.
I may try THIS (http://www.trueprotein.com/store/cu_order.asp) which lets you choose the ratio of ingredients and they'll premix for you. A little more expensive but convenient.

maltodextrin is an ingridient in oatmeal, so im using that until the malto i ordered comes in. the shit is hella cheap. check out google i dont even remember where ordered it from
oh and how many carbs are you getting from the sprees? are you eating a whole package?

okay so its just in oatmeal. thnx.
im eating one serving size of spree.. which is like 8 pieces. i know its probably not as much dextrose as i should be getting... but im doing what i can with what i got.
i still havent been able to cross that line and order food over the internet. i have no issue with ordering anything else other then food.... i will do it... but i just would like to understand how much dextrose and malot i need per serving for my goal of cutting... fat loss and muscle gain or maintenence. everyone has a different preference in serving size... and im clueless as to what mine would be. if someone can provide me with some type of formula it be appreciated. since i know too much malto and or dextrose can contribute to fat storage ( you basically have to know how to use it or it uses you) i need to be careful with it.. and find out how to properly take it. 8 pieces of spree and a 1/2 cup of dry oatmeal is hardly risky. it may not be giving me what i need in term of dextrose and malto but its not giving me more then what i need thats for sure.

Eh, maltodextrin is NOT in 100% rolled oats or steel cut oats. It's in the sugary, processed packets. It is technically a complex carb that the body treats as a very fast-acting simple carb. As such, it's only real purpose is post-workout. Not a good thing to consume at other times. If you get non-sweetened oatmeal, there's no problem. :tu:

Believe it or not it has not been uncommon for me to put away 75g of dextrose PWO during a bulking diet....PLUS maltodextrin.
Takes a while to drink the shake though!
Pan Mon, September 12th, 2005, 05:09 AM Does anyone know of anywhere in the UK (without hugely inflated prices) I can get malto and dex from (including online)? I've looked but no luck at all. Currently still making do with my oats and bananas.
Thanks

But looks expensive compared to what we pay here.
BN ships overseas but I don't know what the hassles are: http://www.bulknutrition.com/?page=ordering

Malkavian Tue, September 13th, 2005, 05:13 PM Places that sell beer brewing supplies and ingredients usually have malto and dex in bulk by the pound.
Not sure if that type of establishment is common in the UK but it might be worth a shot.
dafish721 Fri, September 16th, 2005, 05:08 PM I put about 1-1.5 tbl of plain oatmeal, 1 tlb of wheat germ and 1 tbl of natural peanut butter in my PWO shake and used to also use 1 ripe banana but after reading multiple postings about how fructose doesn't do the same thing that Dex does as far as muslce glycogen is conserned I stopped doing the banana. Do I need to add dex or can I use what I already use or can I add something else sweet to the shake? BTW, I am trying to cut fat and maintain/slowly gain muscle.
Hort Fri, September 16th, 2005, 05:14 PM As much as I love the flavor of PB in a choclate shake, I'm strongly in the camp that you want NO fats in that immediate pwo shake. Doing so kinda makes the whole point of fast-acting dextrose and malto pointless, imo.
Gordo Fri, September 16th, 2005, 05:45 PM Immediately PWO is a really bad time for fats....save the PB for your evening shake
1FastGTX Fri, September 16th, 2005, 05:57 PM Agreed. I like very low fat PWO.
dafish721 Sat, September 17th, 2005, 12:59 PM Thanks. I will put it in my last shake. What do you think about whole almonds vs natural peanut butter for clean fat in my last shake. Any difference. Is it just perference? :tu:

There isn't reallly a difference between almonds and natty peanut butter, assuming you are using the same calories for each. They both have lots of good fat, VERY low saturated fat, some protein and a decent amount of fiber.
That said, I don't think whole almonds would mix up too good in a shake. Even my crunchy peanut butter leaves some chunks at the bottom of the cup. You could try all natural almond butter, but that might be expensive.
