View Full Version : Anyone else doing cardio and can feel yourself getting skinny :)
CASD Sat, September 10th, 2005, 01:04 PM Well thats a extreme of course but I can feel myself slimming when I do 80-90% mhr for 60 min.
This is my second day with this feeling.. I did 60 min total ..45min at 145-147bpm and then the last 15min at 157-160bpm..
I'm sure it's only water.. but it's a nice motivational feeling :)
SwoleCat Sat, September 10th, 2005, 01:08 PM 90% of your MHR for an hour??
Whoa......
~SC~
CASD Sat, September 10th, 2005, 01:13 PM Well I did a refigure it was more of 15min 65-75% warmup and then 45min 80-85%
Is this too much ?

well some will say its too much and others will say other things but my general rule is if you can handle it, do it.
just make sure you have the right post nutrition and thruout the day
CASD Sat, September 10th, 2005, 01:58 PM After cardio I wait for an hour and eat ATW w/water, 1cup cooked Rolled Oats and water w/splenda and Cinnamon , 1/2 grapefruit
Food equals 40g Protein, 40g Carb and 4g fat

It's really not going to be too much.
The more important question is: what good was it?
You took some calories off the table.
Were you spending time over the ventilation threshold? (i.e. if you could talk easily the whole time then no, you weren't). If you did, then you may have increased the cardio capacity.
Did you "bonk"? If you did this, then it is too much, but it might still have done you some good by training up the cardio. But bonking means muscles are being cannibalized and if you're still at the point of asking what is too much, then bonking is too much.
If you want to do hard cardio - and there are many, many benefits - then make sure you get good sleep, eat enough carbs, and don't bonk. Then knock your self out and go for the VT. You will find it takes more and more work to take the starch out of you as you improve your condition. At which point you might wonder how much cardio you _want_ to do, and then just go for cardio maintenance.
CASD Sat, September 10th, 2005, 02:36 PM Fat loss and keeping the muscle is the goal...and only goal and of course the the beneifits that come with it :)..
I'm taking weekly weight and measurements starting last mon..I'll adjust if I see muscle loss :D..
Also I'll be starting Fullbody workouts 3 days a week next week..mon-wed-fri with 30 min cardio after and keep my cardio at 5-6 days a week.
The purpose of the fullbody workouts is more about getting back up to steam..and splitts , and also to help keep the muscle with the cardio.. Remember I was not working out from Nov 04 to Aug 05.. So I need to build back up to splitts ..etc..,
My daily intake because I'm carb senitive is 2200 cals avg. 243g pro , 162g carb and 63 fat split into 5-6 meals with the heavier meals earlier in the day.. I'm also zig zagging 3 low cal days and one high cal day..

DIET IS KEY

i said the same thing. where are these supermen coming from?
CASD Sat, September 10th, 2005, 02:42 PM hahahaha read my follow up/correction :) 15min 65-75% warmup and then 45min 80-85%
I didn't find it that hard... but I decided to bring my HR back down the last 5-10 min.. back to 65-75%.. from now on
And I totally agree...Diet is the Key/ most important thing you can do..
BD231 Sat, September 10th, 2005, 03:24 PM Try doing cardio in Ketosis, it'll blow your mind!
In ketosis you can actually feel your body releasing fat, it's crazy.
CASD Sat, September 10th, 2005, 03:28 PM Yea ..I did atkins for awhile and started back here doing CKD ...but I bought Tony V's BFFM ebook...and decided to try his diet and workouts...:)
When I was on Atkins... I had more dizzy spells then I could count..heck I'd bend over and when I came back up I'd almost fall over ...and I'm sure I lost alot of muscle...

Um ... I'm curious, what is "bonking"? Here in England that word means to have sex with someone.
CASD Sat, September 10th, 2005, 08:28 PM Same here in the States or at least where I'm from... or is it boinking :D lol
zenpharaohs Sat, September 10th, 2005, 09:27 PM i said the same thing. where are these supermen coming from?
I suspect they are coming from two places:
1. Not having an accurate MHR reading. Those age formulas are averages. Something like half the population will have an MHR above the age formula. Those people will think their MHR is, say 170, but it might actually be 185. Then they work out at 90% of 170, which is 153, and say they worked out at 90% of MHR. But they really worked out at 83% of MHR.
2. It's not that impressive for _some_ people to do this. It has to do with whether you have a high VO2max and have trained up your lactate threshold. If you do that sort of training (and this guy's signature "Cardio Freak" suggests that he has done some good deal of it) then you can work out at your lactate threshold until you bonk - which can take 90 minutes for some trained exercisers. The lactate threshold can be up around 90% of MHR, so if you are doing hard cardio, well, then 90% MHR for some people could actually be sustainable for a long time. Probably not most people, but it's not like a world record or anything.
There are reasons that people are told not to do cardio for more than 30 minutes at a time. But if you are an endurance athlete, they don't tell you that. There is still adaptation your body needs to do to build endurance beyond what you get from stuff like HIIT or even 30 minutes of hard cardio. It would be very interesting to know if there is anyone who trains for marathons by _never_ running more than 30 minutes a day. And how do they do in the marathons?
zenpharaohs Sat, September 10th, 2005, 09:31 PM Um ... I'm curious, what is "bonking"? Here in England that word means to have sex with someone.
When you deplete the glycogen, bad things happen. Either your blood sugar level dives, and you can get brain problems, or your muscles run out first, and they just stop working. Some woman bonked in sight of winning the Hawaiian triathlon and just laid down in the middle of the road and couldn't move.
OK that is an extreme bonk, but if it happens, you know it.
doordude42 Sat, September 10th, 2005, 10:13 PM I'll answer your original question. Whether it was psychological, physical, or whatever, YES. When I was doing LISS 2X daily I could've sworn I could actually feel the fat "melting". Whatever the reason, it felt great and kept me motivated!!! :tucool:
CASD Sat, September 10th, 2005, 11:38 PM Exactly :) I love the feeling because by the end of the day I feel bloated again..
Probably just sweating off the extra water but it does make you feel like pushing to the limit..
Back before I knew better ..last year before I found this site I was doing 90min cardio ..45min treadmill and 45 Eliptical same session.. I was running around 155bpm.. I know when I hit in the 160's it doesn't feel good.. huffing and puffing..etc.., So I feel my limit is in the 160's for now.. So I keep it below that....
