Is there any impact on how effective cardio is if a large fan is blowing on you in the gym? I have done it like twice and it really kept me from sweating and consequently it didnt feel like I had as good a wokout. I dont plan on doing it ever again but was wondering if the fan could impact the cardio seeing how it keeps your body cooler while working.

this is one of those large industrial type fans that feels like it will knock you over. It definetly kept me cool. just didnt seem like it was a good option but I guess if your burning calories you are burning calories.

I need "air" circulating around me or in my face when doing cardio, it just feels better. I mean, I sweat like a whore in church regardless, so it's not affecting me in any negative manner fat loss wise. I need my air!

The only problem I could see this having for me is that it would dry out my mouth and nose faster then normal. Which would be easily fixed with drinking water a bit more frequently while doing it.

When I'm doing my cardio at home, I put my stationary bike in my downstairs office which has a HUGE mofo airconditioning unit and remove my shirt.

Does it affect my cardio? Yes indeed, it makes it much better.

It's a little bit wasteful isn't it?

It's a huge benefit to have a fan keep you from overheating. It's a better workout if you have the fan and push harder. Your body does spend some calories sweating to cool off, but not as many as doing the exercise.

There is a famous episode where Eddie Merckx got on a stationary bike to measure his cycling ability. Which, for those who don't know and haven't already Googled, Eddie Merckx won five tours of France and is still considered my many the greatest cyclist in history. OK well he got cranked up on the bike and had to quit exhausted after an hour instead of the several hours normally involved in racing. It was embarassing, and nobody understood what was wrong. Then they figured out that without his headwind, Eddie overheated. That's when they figured out that you need to be able to have a fan blowing on people in serious indoor ergometric testing.

OK so get with the fan. Fan is good. Use it to increase your intensity.

Sounds like fans are good. It just doesnt seem right to not have sweat pourin of your face when exerting that much energy.

During the winter I ride my bike indoors on a trainer. I always use a fan to compensate for the air I would be getting outside on the bike. If I didn't have the fan, yes... I'd be sweating like the whore in church.

Actually, I just like pretending I'm Lance Armstrong and have an army of scientists studying the effects of my aerodynamic positioning in a wind tunnel.

You don't burn as many calories sweating as you do pumping the pedals.

Otherwise, people would do stationary bikes for relaxation and steam baths to burn calories. The days of anyone believing that steam baths alone were a good way to lose weight are long gone.

You want to really pretend you're Lance? Dial it up for about 1600-1700 calories per hour and see how long you can last. I can last about a minute. Lance can do that for hours.

I'm not sure about this but i'd be willing to bet sweating doesn't burn any calories! :D

Let's not get CRAZY now. 1700 cal. per hour. Again, I don't know but that sounds a little far fetched.
