View Full Version : Am I doing somethin' wrong?
simpshawn Thu, September 8th, 2005, 05:57 PM hey Ive been working out for about a month and a bit, basically from the end of july till now and I havent lost a pound, nothing, and i notice no change, I weigh 212 give or take 5 pounds, and its not like i eat unhealthy, in fact im not even sure how i got this fat in the first place i eat incredibly healthy, seeing how my father is diebetic and my mom doesnt always wanna make two meals so most of the time im eating the same thing he is, i think its genetic both my brothers were fat but they seem to have grown a lot and now are skinny, that gives me some hop but i just feel im going to be different just because ive been fat for so long, since grade 4 onward i recently lost about 40lbs, doing nothing i just sorta lost it which was weird and then im starting to work out and its doing nada for me. heres my workout tell me if im doing something wrong
30 cardio - jogging
seated press - back
chest press - chest
tricep pulldowns - triceps
shoulder press - shoulders
seated row - back
leg press - legs
bicep curls- bicep
60 crunches including obliques
back extensions-30
I see myself improving but i see no results at all, this is really discouraging, im going to continue until i do get results because im just that determined but if you have any tips please tell me because this is horrible
212lbs 5 10' 15 yrs
SwoleCat Thu, September 8th, 2005, 06:03 PM It's great you listed your workout, however the TRUE CHANGES will come from your nutritional protocol/approach.
The old adage "you are what you eat" has never been more true.

this is very true... can you post what you typically eat in a day?
also, when do you do your workouts? is it a full body workout or do you split it up over multiple day's? how long do you jog?
good luck reaching your goal :gl:
Resilient Thu, September 8th, 2005, 06:20 PM I'm no expert, but I would bet some people would say that you're gaining muscle... That might be why you've only lost 1 pound! Keep up the good work :tucool:
wh0rume Thu, September 8th, 2005, 09:14 PM there's no way to assume he's gaining muscle, although its definatly a possibility seeing as he's 15 years old and lifting weights.
anyway - its all about calories. you consume more than you burn per day.
you could eat 100% healthy, but if you eat more than you burn, you wont lose any weight.
there's ALOT more to it than that, because it's the amount of carbs/protein/fat you eat per meal, and if your eating enough protein per day.
so.... post what kinds of foods you eat per day.
seeing that your 15 years old - you probably havnt had your growth spirt yet.
(altough - if you're 5'10, maybe you HAVE had it?)
my question to the forums is if someone's eating at a calorie DEFICIT, will that stunt growth during growth years? (assuming they ARE getting the nessessary vitamins/minerals from eating healthy)

yea i havent had my growth spurt yet, i dont think, ive been growing steadily over the years, both my brothers had major ones when they were about 16, im different though because by the time they were in grade 11 they were already 16 for awhile and im in grade 11 and im only 15 caz my brithdays in october :(
im hoping for one...but ye i dont really have a set diet
im a vegetarian so i have like maybe a pouched egg on a bun in the morning then i dont have a lunch period because im taking 5 courses sucks, but i ususally get in maybe a muffin or a sandwich if im lucky, then for dinner i usually have like lentils or like for example today i had vegetarian chilli
i dont eat mcdonalds in fact i dont eat take out unless its something like mr sub or subway and even that i dont get, and as to the jogging issue im usually jogging for about 5 minutes then i walk for 1 minute then run for 5 etc for 30 minutes, sometimes 20 if im really tired because usually i go straight after school and i do that routine i posted 5 days a week with one day rest and one day heavy cardio, usually playing squash for 50 minutes or something.
thanks for the feedback, im also trying to lose weight because i has gyno and i hate it, its having some major impacts on my mind i think lol my day revolves around how my gyno looks that day. its horrible.
thanks keep the feedback commin'

o yea i forgot to ask, how many calories would be ideal to burn to get the quickest results i know it prolly revolves around what my BMR is but just a ball park
wh0rume Thu, September 8th, 2005, 10:40 PM ball park - don't go under 2100 calories a day.
you're going to need alot of protein, so you might want to rethink that whole vegitarian thing. (unless its a medical condition?)
if you really swear by it - just think really hard about it, and you should be able to easily talk yourself out of it with a little logic ;)
...swolecat had a GREAT post about this way back in the day
vatechguy Thu, September 8th, 2005, 10:48 PM If all you're eating in a typical day is a pouched egg on a bun, a muffin or a sandwich if im lucky, then for dinner lentils or vegetarian chilli I have a couple thoughts.
1 - Bread is empty calories - ditch it. (Especially white breads)
2 - this diet sounds like you're starving yourself around 1000 calories a day - stay on it for long and you'll not only lose weight - you'll loose any muscle you do have.
3 - Wh0 is right - whats the motivation behind vegetarianism? You can effectively build mucle on it - but from what I've read it's a major pain in the arse. (Maybe whey is an option for you? Otherwise - crank up the egg whites)
Start with the 2100 Wh0 suggested for a couple weeks - and keep the protein ration in the 40% range - if you're still not losing weight - drop it 2-300 calories per WEEK til you drop a few.

i dont think being a vegetarian makes me have any less logic than someone who does eat meat, in fact with all the dieseases spread by meat these days maybe it would be more logcial not to eat meat, but i do know that not eating meat could be a problem when building muscle and i guess losing weight too, to be honest i dont know why im a vegetarian, just a personal challenge i guess. After a year of being a vegetarian its going to be hard to go back to meat...im seriously considering it though
thanks for the help
GreaseVeteran Thu, September 8th, 2005, 11:20 PM Don't lose that hope simpshawn! I too have been overweight since 4th, but only recently have I begun to see dramatic results.
Before I knew better, I did the following things:
Ate Poorly/Bad Weight Training --> virtually no improvement in muscle strength and mass in the long run; got fatter too!
Ate Poorly/HISS Cardio--> improved endurance; no substantial fat loss
Ate Healthy (no knowledge of meal frequency and timing)/Good Weight Training --> increased muscle strength and mass; SOME changes to appearance but nothing promising in the long run; got depressed and gave up this program
Ate Healthy (no knowledge of meal freq and timing)/HISS Cardio --> decreased muscle strength and mass; ended up looking THINNER but not LEANER!; got depressed and went into a slump
what i'm doing now:
Eat SMART/Awesome Weight Training/HIIT Cardio
--> Gradual decrease in fat; improved cardiovascual fitness; gradual increase in muscle strength and mass
Use your feelings of discouragement as an opportunity to educate and motivate yourself. So, keep that head up!

If you start eating meat you can give yourself a new challenge: Improve your health and fitness. It seems wrong to me to be eating in a caloric deficit before you're done growing. But I'm sure you can make dramatic improvements in yourself by eating clean, healthy foods and eating on a 40/40/20 split. Do some research on how to eat clean, macronutrients, exercise nutrition and weight lifting. Everything you need is on this site, but there are plenty of other great resources out there too.

Hm, there is nothing wrong with (good) vegetarian diet, you just need little bit of imagination.
I do get more then 1 gram/lb a day on vegetarian diet (I'm not talking vegan)...and I feel great on it.
Don't put down vegeterians, we are not stupid!

You can bodybuild on vegetarian diet and you can be lean on it...unless all you eat is pasta and sugar LOL
I am a vegeterian too and I dont consider that to be a problem....all you need is a little imagination.
I get almost all my proteins from food, I take whey only in the am and after workout. Yes, a lot of egg whites but I LOVE omlets :D
Good luck :) :tucool:
wh0rume Thu, September 8th, 2005, 11:53 PM easy easy...
im not defensive about my carnavorism, you shouldnt be about your vegitarianism :tu:
SwoleCat Fri, September 9th, 2005, 09:31 AM im a vegetarian
Ahhhhhh, therein lies a host of issues.
I won't go into it, but I do see why you are having problems now.

Exactly, now where is my Rib Eye!!!!!!
Bottom line is you have to be REALISTIC!!!!
It's MUCH HARDER and impossible for some to attain the body they wish to have when they are Vegan/Vegetarian.
I equate this to one who wishes to be a doctor, but doesn't want to go to medical school. Some things just aren't realistic!!!
If you have gyno as well, stay away from SOY products as this can enhance your gyno, and I bet you probably use quite a bit of soy being a vegetarian.

yea i know i think im gunna go back to eating meat, will it help me lose weight do you think?
sorry if i came across defensive, im just saying logic has nothing to do with being a veggie,

I did not understand this relation. Can you please explain more?

A host of evidence suggests that soy turns to estrogen in the body. Particularly soy isoflavanes. Things like soy beans are not so bad, but many of the mass-produced soy products and soy-containing products are. I generally avoid soy (there's no real reason to eat it anyonw) except in Japanese restaurants on occasion. I like edamame.

sorry if i sounded defensive im just saying that im not any less logical than someone who eats meat, and no i dont eat a lot of soy, i eat a lotta fish and lentils tho, im half east indian so its not like we eat a whole lotta meat anyway, i think im gunna go back tho, its too hard i think i need the protein

Soy Isoflavones are actually anti-estrogen. Moreover the body is not able to convert phytoestrogens into estrogen.
Here are some links I found:

JK2005 Sat, September 10th, 2005, 01:19 AM I also browsed through a lot of pubmedz articles, didnt find anything negative.
Rather...
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=15544549&query_hl=8
Recent studies suggest beneficial health effects of soy and recommend increasing the intake of isoflavone-rich soy protein to the level of intake commonly
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=12450882&query_hl=13
ingestion of soy protein associated with isoflavones and flaxseed rich in lignans improves glucose control and insulin resistance
swankinrosco Sat, September 10th, 2005, 02:32 AM also keep in mind that for the first 1-2 months your muscle may be growing (see your gym improvements) but it's still not showing through the fat
your body fat % is key in "seeing results" ... i didn't really see a change in my own body until i dropped from ~30% - ~24% ... that's a 6% BF difference!
hang in there good things will come i promise.
if you need any advice with routines, food, supplements, etc i would be happy to help via pm or email.

Robertohas Sat, September 10th, 2005, 02:45 AM It's good to build muscle and lose fat at the same time, but doing that will probly discourage you because you may not know that you're gaining muscle/losing fat until there is a big difference. Just make sure you slow down a little on the weights. That's what I did, but i don't know if it will work for you.
Also, it's very hard to lower the visuals of the gyno, trust me I have it too. I lost 75 pounds and I'm still much unhappy with the way my chest looks, I don't want surgery either. If you weight lift, bench press a few times to at least give your chest a muscle-like appearance.

yea man, im trying to do a lotta chest press, its hard, i found that when i started working out my chest was really weak, i can only do like 2 sets of 100lbs right now....i feel like i look the same that i did from when i started working out tho i see improvements on my weights and stuff. Since i became veggie i lost about 40 lbs but nothing since im afraid if i start eating meat again ill balloon up, but i dont know i know itll be easier to gain muscle because you obviously get more protein, maybe its easier while eating meat too...the problem is its hard for me to keep a steady diet because my eating habits vary like somedays ill be hungry all day and cant stop eating and others i dont wanna eat much at all, for example i just ate dinner like 30 minutes ago and im starving again, its seriously screwed
also does anyone have any ideas on how to pass the time while jogging/doing cardio because i find i stop not because im tired but because im bored and i end up just watching the clock on the threadmill go by, i try music but its hard with a big bulky CD player and i still end up looking at the clock, its frustrating because i should be doing cardio a lot more than i am right now
swank thanks man ill definately pm you
later
