View Full Version : bench press
Jon Skee Mon, September 5th, 2005, 01:04 PM i was just wondering when ive done bench press i cant really feel it on my chest, i can feel it a little but never a burn, the only reason i cant do anymore is because my shoulders get burn feeling nearing 8 reps on 2nd set.
is there something im doing wrong? i use 10kg on it and i can do that fine just my shoulders burn is the only reason i cant do anymore.
thanks
Andrew Mon, September 5th, 2005, 01:40 PM I don't really "feel" bench press in the same way that I "feel" other exercises like I feel preacher curls in the biceps, but that's because bench press isn't an isolation exercise. That doesn't mean the lift is easy though, if you use a heavy weight, every rep is stressful. But, it might still be easy for you because 10 kg is a VERY light weight for almost anybody in bench press. I suppose if you mean 10 kg on each side of a 45 lb. bar, that might be difficult for someone who is just starting. I'm not really sure what you mean.

Okay, whatever weight you use is fine. 5 kg on each side is reasonable for someone to start with possibly, but I just mean you need to find the right weight for you. If you don't know what weight to use, you really just need to keep experimenting using heavier weights until you find one that's appropriate.
Edit: In your first post, it sounded like you were saying that your shoulders were what caused to reach failure during your sets of bench press. This is possible, because shoulders are one of the muscle groups involved in bench press. This basically means that your shoulders are a weak point, and you need to focus more on strengthening them with other exercises such as military (shoulder) press.
Jon Skee Mon, September 5th, 2005, 02:36 PM yea i think i do, i just looked at how military shoulder presses are done looks better than some other ones ive done where you lift dumbell out to side could hardly do it even on low weight
Jon Skee Tue, September 6th, 2005, 02:45 PM i watched that video that was posted before about how to do chest exercises and i did bench press and chest flys as he said tonight, and i could feel the burn on my chest on both, on my shoulders aswell but not as much.
yay :D
Hort Tue, September 6th, 2005, 03:49 PM Milos' video? Yes- it's excellent. If you really visualize using the pecs correctly it makes a huge difference.
txitalian Tue, September 6th, 2005, 04:16 PM How are you doing them? I see a ton of people bouncing the bar off there chest, but if you stop just before it hits your chest, you can really feel it. At least I can.

yea ive never bounced it off chest, i added a little bit more weight than i used before, and followed what milo said on his vid.
Sapperstang Tue, September 6th, 2005, 05:42 PM I never feel a burn during bench presses however the next day I am always sore. Nothing else gets sore afterwards but chest always does.

I think you're talking about lateral raises. I do those for my shoulders as well, and yes they are difficult to do with heavy weight. I think they're good though, once you get used to them. The weight you use will increase, I started with only 10 lb. dumbbells. Some start with 5 lb. dumbbells.

Did this seem to work?

yea really did can feel it today, never felt it before.
just my dad was saying that on my right side my pec has grown more than the left, is there a way to correct this? or do i just carry on?
Mikey27 Wed, September 7th, 2005, 05:02 PM when benching just imagine using your chest and nothing else...it works for me also do pec deck and squeeze your chest imagine only using your chest
for the pec thing you might wanna try dumbell benching i never do.....it's just a dominant side thing like my right bicep is bigger then my left
