I have read somewhere that drinking whey protein with milk makes it absorb slower in the body (because of the milk low GI).

Is it true?

right now I'm drinking my post-workout shake with 200ml milk 1% fat+100 ml water.

Should I drink less milk with it ? or should I not drink milk with it at all?

and what about the shake I consume when I wake up?
should it be identical ?

I would appreciate any reply.

I've also heard the same thing as you, but I can't drink my whey with water, I can't stand that taste.
But I don't think you'll notice such a big difference if you switch to water.

I have read somewhere that drinking whey protein with milk makes it absorb slower in the body (because of the milk low GI). How the hell does that work? Water has an infinetly lower GI than milk -- like zero, right?

Besides, if you're drinking your weigh post-workout you want it absorbed QUICKLY, so the protein gets to those muscles that need it the most. As such you'd want some dextrose or a banana, something that's HIGH GI.

Am I completely off my rocker?

milk has low gi, that supposed to slow down the absorption of protein, that's why I know some ppl take they're post-shake only with water.

I do eat like 10g of dextrose+1 banana after.

I was asking whether it's true ?

yes it's true. Milk proteins - casein, form kind of "gel" in stomach and so they slower absorbtion of whey proteins.

I have my pre workout drink with 3dl of milk and post workout with water + 50g maltodextrine.

So I don't understand why milk is a low GI food and therefore takes longer to break down. Isn't milk mostly sugar? And isn't sugar absorbed very fast by the body?

is also a major source of whey protein. For the record, I disagree with the slow release with milk dealio. I would say, if your concentrating on building muscle, use milk, more carbs/calories/protein, if you're concentrating on losing weight, use water.

Kugla answered your question. It's not the sugar that causes the slow or rapid digestion, it's the protein. Milk protein is about 80% casein and casein breaks down slowly. Supposedly casein coagulates in the stomach and binds whey in the process.

The fat content as well slows the gi.
Milk gets a bad rap for such a high protein nutritious drink. It is high in sugar though

I find water works fine for my protein shakes as long as I mix it in advance so the powder has time to disolve completely. I also through in a packet of splenda to bring out the flavor a little more. Makes the protein drink the same consistancy as chocolate milk.
