View Full Version : Cardio after leg day
BusyChild81 Wed, August 31st, 2005, 10:06 AM I've been struggling for some time now with being able to do cardio (treadmill, bike, elliptical, etc.) the day after leg day. Usually, It takes me a couple days to get over the squats, leg presses and all that.
Most of the time, I have to ride the bike slowly or walk on a treadmill. What do you guys do?

I normally try to avoid cardio the day after legs, but if I want to do cardio, I'll usually stick to the elliptical since it's not as hard on the legs as say running on the treadmill. Of course, if it's the first leg workout in any extended period of time, there's a good chance no form of cardio is possible the next day.
sabre Wed, August 31st, 2005, 11:17 AM Im the same way. I try to make sure my leg day splits my chest/tri and back/bi days and do cardio on other days. I did legs yesterday as a matter of fact and I wouldnt want to do cardio today and I havent had a leg layoff in a while.
Buddha Wed, August 31st, 2005, 11:51 AM I do a cardio session the day after legs, and I am sore for the first 5-10 minutes, then it gets better. I usually just go at a nice and easy pace, and try to not overdue it.

Intensity of the cardio is the key, probably not beneficial to be scheduling in a grueling session of IT on the tread the day of or after a heavy leg day, but a nice relaxed to moderate pace and intensity is fine.

Seriously... I'm very average at this and I still manage to get my 45 minutes of cardio in after my Swolegenix leg day.... trust me. My legs are fried after that (come to think of it... today is leg day... ) but I'm still back in the gym 11 hours later doing cardio. 5 minutes warmup and no problem.
You might want to look into the recovery product John STone has been recommending.

I know exactly what you mean! BUT, I can't miss my cardio so I usually jump on the elleptical on some machine that has arms involved as well. That can relieve some of the pressure on your legs and your heart rate still gets up there.
Good luck :)
Ves Thu, September 1st, 2005, 10:38 AM I can tell you that my leg day is brutal but I still do my cardio the next day. In fact I am convinced that it helps as wierd as that sounds. I also take ETS and stretch very well the day after leg day. But I consider cardio (bike riding for me) part of the stretching process. Cardio for sure isn't at its normal pace but I still do it. Usually the DOMS is a little better after the cardio in fact.

Skoorb Thu, September 1st, 2005, 10:39 AM I rarely get sore from legs and even if I do it's not so severe it impacts my cardio work.
Hort Thu, September 1st, 2005, 11:40 AM Agreed with Ves- I did drag my butt in for cardio this morning at 5a... after five minutes the legs warmed up nicely and I had a good 45 minutes. It's funny though... my heart rate always gets to target much faster the morning after leg day. :p

Thank god someone said this. I was getting worried that I was doing a bad job when lifting.
Gordo Thu, September 1st, 2005, 02:09 PM Yup, the day after it sucks a little for a few minutes but I tend to get back into the swing of things.
For me, so long as my nutrition is in check and I get a good nights rest (really key) I'm fairly good to go the next day....cardio, workout whatever.
I don't do any cardio type activity on my leg day anymore as I found it to be very counter-productive. Also, no evening cardio if the next day is legs.
I think it becomes slightly a mind of matter issue....but if you have poor joints or flexibility issues, you may want to take it easy anyway. There's still 5 good days that you can sneak cardio in and that's doing better than 95% of the population anyways.
So maybe approach from that angle. You could always double up cardio on another day if you really felt cheated out of a day. Food for thought. Some people need more repair time....simply genetics....some are gifted and can rush back in fresh the next day some can't.
Accept your limitations because an injury will REALLY set you behind. Also if you don't get adequete rest, you'll never make gains.
Good Luck!
