Here's what I'd recommend...

Pre-lifting : Eat 3/4 cup oatmeal about a half hour before your lifting workouts. It's easy, use a 3/4 cup scoop from your kitchen and put the oatmeal in a ziplock baggie. To make it, put the oats in a cup of water and stir it for about 5 minutes until the oats are mushy. It's not the best tasting thing, but you really get used to it and it's one of the best things you can eat pre-lifting.

Post-lifting : A protein bar is excellent and makes it really easy for you to have something ready right after your workout. Find something that has around 35g protein and 65g carbs (maltodextrin should be in the list of ingredients). That's around 300 calories. A lot of protein bars fit this description, MetRx would probably be a good fit for you. Drink LOTS of water with it.

Pre-aerobic : Before your aerobic workouts, which I'm assuming you do for football as well, try to eat something like what I recommended for pre-lifting. Don't have something with sugary carbs, you'll likely crash during your workout.

Also, at 13, make sure that you're working closely with your football coach on a weight lifting program. He will be able to give you advice on what exercises to do, how to perform them and when and how often to train. Limit your supplements to the protein bars alone, they will be all you need, and try to eat lots of natural protein too, like chicken, fish, eggs, turkey, things like that. Good luck! :tucool:

Personally, I strongly prefer LIQUID protein post-workout, using whey, dextrose and maltodextrin

I do too, but I was going for simplicity. A protein bar is something he can carry in his backpack and eat right after his workout with no measuring, no powders, etc, and it gets the job done just as well as a shake.

StormsPlaya88, try these out...

MetRx makes great bars and these are particularly good in any of the flavors they offer. These bars have 27g protein and 50g carbs. They are delicious and would be a great post workout protein bar.

Agreed. I don't think a 13-year old needs to bother worrying about a PWO shake.

That's all? Just oat meal and water half hour before workout?

Any kind of oat meal? What brand do you use?

Just regular old fasioned Quaker oats. Don't get the kind of oatmeal in a packet. Get the stuff in a tub that's nothing but oatmeal with no extra flavoring.

Oatmeal is a good, slow-release carb food, as opposed to the protein bar which has contains fast-release carbs. You eat the slow carbs before to sustain you through your workout and you eat the fast carbs after to replenish your energy/glucose quickly.
