View Full Version : Tinned Tuna - How to get rid of that "taste"
OmeN March 4th, 2004, 08:29 PM You know that stinking nasty dead fish smell - sick sick sick
Does anyone know how to get rid of it?
I heard that washing the stuff under cold running water for a few mins worked - I havent tried that but i can imagine it all going down the plug hole...haha
J-Man March 4th, 2004, 10:21 PM I have wondered the same thing. I was told Mrs. Dash's spice works. I tried it and it seemed to be ok, but there has to be something better
Wop March 5th, 2004, 12:40 AM Try the tuna in a pouch. It doesn't have that "tin" taste. And go for the albacore tuna. It tends to not be as fishy.

The pouch tuna has much less smell than the can tuna. The albacore has too little "taste" for me though.
senimoni March 5th, 2004, 09:30 AM The pouch tuna is really good. For canned I would put it in a strainer and rinse with really hot water, then cold, pat dry, works for me :-)
dstaver March 9th, 2004, 08:12 AM Fry it with tomato sauce, rice and some vegetables and spice it up with your favorite spices. Shrimp and shellfish are good with this.
tommyspoon March 9th, 2004, 09:16 AM From the former Seafood Chef...
How to get rid of that "tuna" taste:
1. Get a collander or a fine mesh sieve.
2. Extract tuna from can (holding nose if necessary).
3. Place tuna in collander or sieve.
4. Run it under cold water for about 2 minutes.
5. Use as desired.
How does the former Seafood Chef desire it to be used? Well...
Tommy's Tuna Rollups
1 can of tuna
1 small onion, chopped
1 small red or green pepper, chopped
1/4 cup of tomato-based flavoring of your choice (i.e., salsa or pasta sauce)
Salt and pepper to taste (You can add additional seasonings by taking a cue from your choice of "tomato-based flavoring" above; for example, when I use salsa, I add some cumin, chili powder and oregano.)
4 8 inch tortillas (can be flavored or plain)
1. Preheat oven to 350.
2. Combine the first five ingredients in a small pan over low heat. Heat completely through.
3. Heat the tortillas in the oven for 5-10 minutes.
4. Remove tortillas and spread equal parts of the mixture over each tortilla.
5. Roll up tortillas and serve.
These taste even better the next day, and the next day after that. I usually make a batch of these and then have them for lunch for the week. Good either hot or cold.
Bon appetit!

fatboylvr2000 March 11th, 2004, 05:41 PM The pouches are cool but are way more expensive than the canned tuna. I put relish in mine, only downfall is sodium.
Lemon juice is supposed to help too. I tried a few cans that come with lemon juice because they were on sale 2 for 1. I found out why, it was horrible. Might be different if you use fresh lemon juice though. :eat:
kc0kcn March 11th, 2004, 06:41 PM I'll second the lemon juice. I can hardly taste the tuna with a dash of lemon juice added to it.
Vlar March 11th, 2004, 06:46 PM Yum :eat: former Seafood Chef! Going to give that a try :D

Okay, I finally checked this link, and let me tell you, most of these recipes are completely disgusting (I wouldn't go near a tuna shake, nor a tuna souffle, or tuna soup), but I'm sure that's the point. I was starting to get a little nauseous reading through them, but once you get past the first dozen or two, they are VERY tasty-sounding recipes. (Anyone for Tuna & Shrimp Crepes Neptune?)
I'd try the GRILLED TUNA OVER BLACK BEANS - LACED WITH CHILE AND CUMIN WITH SPICY TOMATO CHUTNEY, but I think you need to be a real chef to make this. :read:
LizardOfOz April 15th, 2004, 07:22 PM Get the tuna out and into a bowl and whack in some worcestershire sauce, tabasco sauce, paprika and cayenne pepper. mix in half a can of flagelot beans, job done. high protein, no effort - sweet :)
Gregg S April 16th, 2004, 11:29 AM The Albacore pouches do taste a lot better than the canned stuff. They have 7 Oz of tuna in 'em so some of us can eat it all at one sitting.
I like to mix up the tuna with fat free Miracle Whip and cut up a slice of fat free american cheese. Then I put it inbetween a couple of slices of Stone Ground wheat bread and make a grilled tuna and cheese sandwich. Oh man, that's livin'! I let my 9 yr old daughter try some of my sandwich (normally she HATES whole wheat/fat free stuff) and she really liked it. I didn't tell her it was really good for her LOL.
