I think that this belongs in this forum:

This morning when I was doing my Hiit cardio routine, about 5 minutes into it, I had a huge pain in the side of my abs, I managed to work through the pain to about 19 minutes but it was killing me and I couldnt stand it anymore. Does anyone know what would cause this?

I would say you're not ready for HIIT yet. Go back to moderate/high intensity cardio for a week or two and then try again.

I normally get a slight ache at the bottom of my rib cage and outside of my upper abs when I do my HIIT sessions. This is caused by lack of oxygen. It normally starts after about the 4th or 5th 100% 30 second interval which is when I get pretty winded. Then after some deep, concentrated breathing the ache goes away. I really go hardcore on my HIIT sessions, so I get pretty winded during my 30 second-100% effort bursts and then calm down during the 90sec-50-60%% effort jog. I used to get these cramps when I ran sprints when I played in Highschool football. Anyways, if this is what you're describing then take long, deep breathes and push through the pain. It'll go away and is only temporary. If it's not what I described then I have no clue. Good luck though..:)

If you still prefer HIIT you may want to switchup your intervals. Instead of doing something like Zeke's 30/90 sprint/rest you could go with 15/45 and build up to the longer intervals.

I have been doing Hiit for about 2.5 weeks now and I noticed a slight pain on Tuesday morning and I easily worked through that, but this morning it was almost unbearable. I am doing 60 sec. splits at about 90% and 60%. I think that I am going to try and concentrate on those deep breaths and if that doesnt work for me, I will change up the splits a little bit. Thanks for the ideas!!!

Zeke - thanks for the advice, I tried that this morning when I started feeling the pain and it worked great, and I was able to get through my whole routine.

I have the same pain about 18-19 minutes into my running workout. Does your chest move up and out when you breathe? Or does your stomach move out when you breathe?

Cool, netzig, glad it helped.;) It really helps me to get some good, deep breathes in while busting ass in HIIT.:D

I just really try concentrating on breathing throughout my whole HIIT workout and even my weight training.....breathe, breathe, breathe! :tu:

Pain in the ribcage is pretty normal. If I get it, I usually just concentrate on breathing deeper. If it's really bad, I might skip an interval to get my oxygenation back up and the pain is reduced.

I dont feel it very often. If the pain is extremely severe and you feel it every time you workout, then you might need to cut back slightly until your condition improves.
