View Full Version : Fish oil suggestions?
xman Fri, August 12th, 2005, 06:11 PM I'm looking to start supplementing my diet with omega-3 and omega-6 from fish oil. Can anyone suggest a manufacturer that makes a really high-quality product, preferrably in capsules? (My wife HATES seafood, so if it tastes even remotely like fish, she won't go anywhere near it...thus the capsules)
Thanks in advance!
dodus Fri, August 12th, 2005, 07:17 PM I'm not really sure that the quality of fish oil capsules varies significantly. Just make sure it's not cod liver oil (salmon, mackerel, or just "fish" will work), and make sure its EPA and DHA add up to at least 300 per serving. You might also want to get the coated kind, so that you won't burp up the fish taste.
thirtysomething Fri, August 12th, 2005, 07:26 PM A friend of mine tried the capsules and was so close to barfing it was not funny. Apparently they come back up a little as they digest. Maybe someone has a means to avoid that or perhaps flax oil is a better choice for her?

LOL!! I thought I was all alone... (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showpost.php?p=103058)
tennisball Fri, August 12th, 2005, 09:27 PM The google ad that pops up at the bottom of this thread has fish oil pills for sale, and seems to have a selling point of "deoderized pills for no fishy 'repeats'". Maybe you should look for that too.
Kino Sat, August 13th, 2005, 07:02 AM Personally I've been using Spectrum's Norwegian Fish Oil Caps (http://www.myvitanet.com/nofioi250cas.html) for the past 4-5 months with none of the side effects mentioned above. That link is just the cheapest I've found them on the net...you can get these at any Whole Foods for about $20.
I take 8 a day split up between morning, noon, and night. This amounts to around 1500mg of EPA/DHA daily. Don't ask me to explain that one...it was suggested to me, and I just took the advice.
Recently, in an effort to keep more money in my pocket while keeping supplements on my shelves, I picked up a couple of bottles of Nature's Bounty Fish Oil cap's (http://www.naturesbounty.com/pages/products.aspx?PID=168&PPID=54). Walgreens often has a buy 1 get 1 free sale, so I got 2 bottles of 250 caps for about $14. I haven't tried these yet (I try to keep 2-3 months worth of supplements on hand just in case) but I'm hoping that these will be what I'm able to stick with. I'll open a bottle in a couple of weeks and know better then.
Hort Sat, August 13th, 2005, 09:09 AM I just bought THESE (http://www.bulknutrition.com/?products_id=44). Only $3.25 for 100 x 1000. Haven't tried them yet but the price was right.

If you have a membership to sam's they sell enteric coated fish oil caps which don't give you fish burps and have I think like 450 mg of epa/dha per capsule (about 1.5 times as much as normal). The epa/dha is the good stuff, the stuff you want. I'm not sure about the proce but it's better than any I've seen. Also if you don't mind the fish burps they have regular fish oil even cheaper.
