Today I got back from the gym and, being out of protien powder (hurry up UPS!) instead I fixed myself a big bowl of quick oats (2 servings) w/ davinci syrup and a small glass of milk to drink ( a no no for PWO I know, but I wasn't in the mood for water)

At any rate, sucked the whole thing down, and felt great for a while, then I literlaly couldn't keep my eyes open for maybe 20 minutes. AFter that, felt totally refreshed. I get down-spikes like that a lot during long classes, which I'd always associated with my blood sugar spiking down after eating refined sugars or white bread.

Didn't think quick oats would qualify in that category though...would it? What could I add to a post-workout meal to keep that kind of downer period from occuring?

Sorry, don't have much info to add to help - I'm still learning myself. But I had a quick question. Why is milk not good PWO? What kinds of thins (generally) ARE good PWO? I usually have a protein shake in water and fiber - usually keeps me full for a while. Then Fatfree Cottage Cheese or natty pb.

Don't mean to hijack your thread...just curious.

Good luck :tu:

People generally advocate staying away from fatty foods (like milk, which even as skim has a bit of fat) PWO because the fats slow the absorbtion of everything else into your system. The poitn of a PWO shake or meal is to get protien and carbs to your muscles as fast as possible

Thanks! I think I should look into getting Dextrose/Maltodextrin to add to my protein shake PWO...that'd give me a nice source of protein/carbs.

Ummm... most Whey powders I've looked at have as much or more fat as skim milk, fyi.

I used to think milk was bad PWO because of the low GI (I wanted something high). However, it has a very high insulin index and probably doesn't slow the absorption of when too much.

The sugars - lactose, are not optimal cabs PWO though.

Remember, if you go high GI PWO, eat something slowly digesting within an hour or so.

FYI lots of people use quick oats to spike their insulin. Anytime you eat something your blood sugar goes up and insulin is released.
