View Full Version : caught the flu, can't workout
davey_fl Thu, March 4th, 2004, 09:04 AM I started my program Jan 13th and to-date I've lost 16lbs, and have about 15 more to go. I just got back to the cold north from sunny San Diego and it's either the sudden weather change, or my body being worn out from all the workout out, but I've got the flu. I have no energy, sore throat, and I'm hot and cold :( Looks like I'll have to put my training on hold until this blows over...
:(
The Mike Thu, March 4th, 2004, 10:30 AM Do you find it absolutely impossible to train, or do you work out in a gym where you risk infecting a bunch of other people (assuming that bothers you :P )?
I ask because it's pretty easy to lose motivation if you stop training and the momentum goes away, that's been my downfall twice before, but if I feel a bit off I train regardless now, I just try not to sneeze on anyone :D

Personally I've been able to fight off the cold and flu by working through it. I may sniffle a lot while I'm working but I ended up being healthier as a result.
I'd at least give training a shot. If you just can't do it that's fine. Just try though.
My $0.02
davey_fl Thu, March 4th, 2004, 10:33 AM I workout at home so spread of infection isn't a worry. But with my head spinning the way it is and the hot cold feeling, I can't face the workout. However, I am motivated to workout, I just think it will prolong the flu...

I cought a flue two weeks ago. I still have it, although it is almost gone. But I never stopped working out. Idid not even stop doing weights. In fact I even gre in reps and weight on certain excersise. It is true, that it is very easy to excuse yourself from working out. I can't aford that. I an very close to my goal and I will do everything I can do reach it. Of course, if your body tells you it does not have energy, that you should listen and take a few days off.
In your situation I would seek professional help. Ask your doctor for an advise.
davey_fl Thu, March 4th, 2004, 10:35 AM daveo you're correct we had rain on some of the days, but afternoons were usually not too bad - keep in mind that coming from Canada where it's currently minus 20, even your lower than average 15C in San Diego feels good. Plus it was nice to see the ocean again :)
Jingo Thu, March 4th, 2004, 10:41 AM If you're ill, stop.
Training while ill is as bad as training on an injury and it's also likely to cause an injury if you're training while weak and lacking concentration.
I fully beleive in giving your body what it needs, and while ill it needs rest so your immune system can sort things out.
Derwinator Thu, March 4th, 2004, 11:28 AM Woke up yesterday AM with that "funny" tickle in the back of my throat and sinuses draining. I ran down to the store and picked up a bottle of Airborne (homeopathic cold remedy) and took it every three hours through the afternoon and evening. The trouble is by dinnertime I was feeling aches and was running a low grade fever (99.4F). I went to bed early and feel a little better today (no fever), but not 100%.
I feel motivated to workout anyway since yesterday was my normal workout day and I missed it. I feel really guilty and that I'm losing progress if I miss my workouts. My wife keeps telling me to give myself rest and not go to the gym today. But I already feel like I'm starting to lose muscle (my weight has dropped 2 lbs while still eating as normal and no workout). What do you think? Do you think working out will prolong the illness or help my body be stronger to fight it?
JetGirl Thu, March 4th, 2004, 11:36 AM I got sick earlier this week. Sore throat, stuffy nose, hazy icky feeling, etc.. I decided to take a few days off from the gym. This way I can recover, get some well deserved sleep and let my body rest, and catch up on cheesy soap operas. The results? I feel awesome today. My cold is mostly gone and I feel well rested and ready to tackle the world (roar!).
I totally agree with what Jingo said though, give your body a rest. If you've been training nonstop for a while you deserve a little bit of a break - you're body would appreciate it.
d_samuylin Thu, March 4th, 2004, 01:05 PM After careful consideration of what beens said, I will take Jungo's advice and take a few days off to recover from my flue completely.
brownguy Thu, March 4th, 2004, 01:09 PM I just want to agree that taking some time off is a good idea.
You can work out through a cold, but a flu is a different story.

Decided to follow the majority opinion of most of the posts here and my wife - I took off a few days and I'm feeling a lot stronger. I am planning to workout later this morning and I'm hoping that it will be a great workout so I can get back on track!
