View Full Version : Macro split and low blood pressure
Gila Monster Wed, August 10th, 2005, 06:04 AM OK, 6 months on the board and I'm still trying to figure out my diet. :o
My blood pressure is inherently low. Sometimes I can wake up after an afternoon nap with bp as low as 80/50. My normal bp is 90/60.
My question is, is there a connection between higher carb intake and, err, raising the blood pressure?
Well, I'm not certain how to put this question. The thing is that I feel my energy level rising when I eat more carbs than protein, and when blood pressure drops I naturaly feel weak and non energetic. Bottom line, I feel better when I eat more carbs, and feel bloated when I eat more protein.
So should I eat more carbs? Are carbs and low blood pressure connected at all?
Thanks in advance,
G.M.

Not sure but i'll say this. If you feel better eating carbs, have at it and eat em'.

Funny you should ask because I have the exact same issue. When I was younger any animal proteins would make me lethargic and bloated. Carbs do cause us to retain mor water (as does sodium) so I would say that they do affect blood pressure. I find that when I reduce carbs I feel like crap, especially in the morning.

Oh, that's exactly how I feel! I MUST have my carbs in the morning!
So do you eat more carbs than protein?
Actually, I can handle fish - they are considered a light food. But chicken breasts can be mission impossible! I can sometimes get a mild headache if I eat too much of them... How weird.

I rarely get 40% protein and before dieting was doing well with less than 20%. Of course, my carbs have always been the healthier type :) Over time I have watched my rate of fat loss and determined that there does not seem to be much difference between 40% protein and 30% so I typically end up somewhere in between. Increasing fats worked better for me.
Besides drinking a lot I make sure to get some added salt in my diet so I'll retain a little more water. Caffeine also helps a lot. That usually keeps me from getting too low, (although I regularly see diastolic numbers in the 40s).

That helps a lot, thanks! :)
For now I'll stick to the 50:30:20 split. Maybe in the future I'll incorporate some more fats, but for now I'll stick for a while to a certain program to see how it works.
And eat pickles with my tuna.
Thanks again! :tu:
