View Full Version : Are you hungry?
guava Thu, March 4th, 2004, 07:01 AM One piece of wisdom I heard a while back:
If you're not hungry in the morning, then you ate too much for supper the night before.
This really wised me up, and now, I go to bed just a little hungry each night.
Strange thing is, I stopped being hungry in the morning. Usually, I get up, have a glass of water, and do some stationary bike. After the bike, I have some breakfast, then go to aerobics class. But I really only eat the breakfast because I "have to". Am I just too focused on my exercise that I'm denying my hunger or is someone slipping me food in the middle of the night?
So, who's hungry?
Do you eat at scheduled times, or only when you feel hungry?
Do you skip meals when you overdid it the day before?
:: kna :: Thu, March 4th, 2004, 07:28 AM I really can't face breakfast in the mornings (I get up about 6:30), which can obviously make eating a real struggle as clearly it's hard to eat if you feel like you're going to throw.
I'm still undecided as to whether I ought to force myself to get used to it, or just wait until about 9am and have something in work.
The Mike Thu, March 4th, 2004, 07:35 AM Yup I'm usually a little bit hungry when I go to bed, but in the morning I've alwyas struggled to eat anything though I do now.
I'd never starve myself the day after eating a bit too much the day before, I would just go back to the normal routine, you're body can deal with a few extra calories and raise your metabolism accordingly.
As long as you don't do it all the time a big meal once a week (maybe twice, though not for me) won't do any harm.
Jim Thu, March 4th, 2004, 07:40 AM Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. So I always eat it.
Sandbag Thu, March 4th, 2004, 07:47 AM When I go to bed I can't stop thinking of how good breakfast is going to taste in the morning! Sometimes I am not that hungry, but last night I didn't have much to eat and today was famished for breakfast.
Jingo Thu, March 4th, 2004, 08:09 AM i eat at scheduled times, hunger isn't that accurate, it's not a good measure of when you need food.
i'm never hungry in the morning but always eat now, never used to. Only times i realy get hungry is mid morning and before my evening meal, when i've done a work out and it's been a while since i ate.
Two Step Thu, March 4th, 2004, 09:10 AM I agree with Jingo - hunger is not always a good indicator of the food you need. Especially considering exercise tends to suppress appetiete.
When I am training, I follow a simle rule - eat before you are hungry and drink before you are thirsty because if you get hungry or thirsty it is already too late.

Interesting thought.
However, I do eat breakfast. I get up so hungry in the morning that I can't wait till I come back from my morning run to eat breakfast. However, I am very hungry about 2.5 hours after my lunch. I usually eat lunch around 1 PM. So by 3:30 PM I am starving. So I eat an apple at 3:30 then a half of protein bar at 4:30 and a light dinner at 6 PM (usually either a can of tuna or a can of salmon with bowl of home made salad. I work otu after all and about 10 PM I eat one serving of non-fat cottage cheese. I am very hungry between the time of 3:30PM and 6PM. I understand that my post is kind of off the topic but any suggestions woudl be greatly appreciated.

Do you skip meals when you overdid it the day before? I haven't been physically hungry since I've started (about 1 month ago). My brain may have gone a little wonky and said I was hungry, but I tend to ignore that big lump ;)
I eat at scheduled times, or close to it. I have this ability to go far too long without food -- to the point that my body temp starts to drop and I start going numb, before I notice it. That's obviously not too healthy and probably the classic definition of 'starvation mode'. Since I know I can neglect food like that, I just eat when I should to make sure I get enough calories. My problem has been getting enough, not too few calories.
I never skip meals, unless I pass out from lack of sleep or something.
I don't think about eating too much, I just eat what I should when I should. That works out pretty darn well :tucool:

From what I've read, the conventional wisdom says that you need to start the day with good fuel to keep you going all day. I find that the MORE I eat the evening before, the MORE hungry I am in the morning. I've noticed almost universally that folks who've had weight problems have indicated that they generally skipped breakfast. I myself had fallen out of the habit and found that it took a period of time of making myself eat at the same time each morning to get back in the habit. I have definitely noticed that days I've skipped breakfast or ate junk (read: sugary processed carbs, little protein) I had less energy at workouts and found myself hungry all day promoting overeating. I think the key is to eat a balanced meal of protein and complex carbs to help your body have an even burn of calories through the day.
Sheepish Thu, March 4th, 2004, 12:18 PM I can't remember where I read it, but a good rule of thumb I heard was that if you feel hungry, you should rate your hunger on a scale of 1-10... 1 being satisfied, and ten being starving. If it's only 1-4 you shouldn't have anything to eat.
It works for me, but I guess it depends on how honest the feed-me! part of your brain is :) I certainly don't want to feel really hungry on my diet, 'cos if I am then I'm not eating enough...
acappy Thu, March 4th, 2004, 08:21 PM I tend to eat a later dinner (7:30-8:00) which I know is bad because I go to bed at 10:00 so I'm on a pretty undigested meal when I hit the sack, which can't help in the weight loss arena. I always eat breakfast (6:30am) because I know I'll be starving before I can go to lunch (2:00pm-crappy work schedule) I'm really not that hungry when dinner time rolls around, but I eat it anyways...
Hmmm, looking back over that makes me think that I should really incorporate some light snacking throughout my day and make dinner more of an evening snack...
Anyways, the only time I'm actually "hungry" is around 11:30-12:00 which makes sense since that's 5 hours after my breakfast and 2 hours before my lunch ! !
Wop Thu, March 4th, 2004, 08:50 PM I've always eaten breakfast. I just can't start my day without it. Since I started my cutting plan, I actually eat more for breakfast than I used to. Granted, I also workout in the morning, so I need that extra fuel. Also, since I started eating more meals throughout the day, I rarely find myself hungry. I figured when I cut down my calories I would be starving all the time. Not so.
It works out really well because I never feel the need to snack, since I know I have a meal coming up soon. I'm just worried about being able to get enough calories once I stop cutting!
dstaver Thu, March 4th, 2004, 09:35 PM I'm always starving in the morning and can hardly wait to get my breakfast. And I'll feel even more hungry if I've had a huge meal the night before.
Actually, I can't remember ever waking up and not wanting food... :eat:
Dave_Indeed Mon, March 8th, 2004, 03:02 PM I have trouble eating too much for dinner, this work thing really cuts into my eating freedoms, so it's hard trying to sneak back to the break room to get a snack in.
Dinner is just so tastey too.
tan_pao_wei Tue, March 9th, 2004, 12:06 AM Ever since i started a proper diet about a month ago i have nv been hungry, but instead scare i eat too much, so i usually have too little calories in the day, and so i end up eating more caleries in the evening to hit my daily needed calories.
Abigail Tow Thu, July 20th, 2006, 12:56 PM you know what ...i'm always hungry ... but i cant eat big portions at a time. so i guess my diet pretty much takes care of itself
plus i have great discipline when it comes to food ... i find it's one of the easiest things to do. i was drinking 7 mugs of tea a day ...which is about 14 cups. a friend of mine pointed it out to me and the next day i quit... ofcourse i experienced really bad withdrawal and M@-like mood swings :p
when we were kids, my mother tended us like a hen... we couldnt step out for school till we had finished all of our very huge asian breakfast ... now i'm down to porridge :(
Elby87 Thu, July 20th, 2006, 02:10 PM I don't go to bed hungry, but I sure do wake up hungry. That's pretty much the only time I feel hunger, every once in a while I get a little tummy rumble before my 4pm meal, but it's wierd because I don't -feel- hungry, it's just that little rumble. Maybe it's just my stomach saying "K I'M READY, LETS DO THIS!"

I always go to bed on a full stomach (cottage cheese, PB, fruit) and don't have a problem with fat.
But seperating out my (smaller) meals does help not to over eat at any one meal.
Usually hungry in the morning, although cardio definitely supresses hunger to the extent that I can often delay breakfast a bit and certainly the next meal.
Last time I didn't feel like eating much the next day, although I did have a small breakfast, was when I went out to a restaurant and ate a lot (mostly 'clean' though). Probably hit 4000kcal for that day, almost double my usual at the moment and I definitely did not feel like eating much the next day.
Abigail Tow Thu, July 20th, 2006, 03:57 PM this reminds me of a song we used to sing in elementary school.. i cant remember the lyrics
Hungry, hungry, I am hungry
Table, table, here I come
I could eat a goose-moose burger
Fifteen pickles and a purple plum
I could eat a bowl of noodles
Half a pound of ....meat
Hungry hungry i am starving
table table table here i come

kribrg Thu, July 20th, 2006, 04:56 PM If I am eating right I never get hungry even if I am on a calorie deficit. Let me miss a planned meal and my body lets me know within a half hour that it is time to eat!
Alan Finger Thu, July 20th, 2006, 05:12 PM Yes. Yes I am.
Gordo Thu, July 20th, 2006, 05:29 PM A thread back from the dead.
If one is hungry, their meal spacing is messed up or their fat intake is likely too low.

I eat every 2-3h. I rarely go over 3h anymore because i get hungry. :) Has with breakfest i think your onto something. If i eat alot before bed i'm usually not that hungry.
karl78 Thu, July 20th, 2006, 09:47 PM I eat every 2 hrs and 45 mins and I usually start getting hungry around 15 mins before my next planned meal. :)
digitalnebula Fri, July 21st, 2006, 01:35 PM My hunger intensity has a lot to do with what I ate last before hitting the sack.
I find if I have something sugary after 8:00, I wake up ravenously hungry.
If I simply eat dinner or have a night time protein shake, I am not really hungry in the morning.
For me, it is not really driven by how much I eat, it is what I eat... :eat:
HevyMetal Fri, July 21st, 2006, 03:45 PM According to those more learned than myself, If you eat within one-half hour of getting up....and....if the breakfast contains protein you then Kick-start your metabolism into high gear. Which is a good thing.
One study I read said that those who eat a breakfast with protein in it generally consume less calories overall per day than someone who skips brekky.
I always eat breakfast. If upon getting up I don't feel all that hungry due to revelry the night before then I will just have a whey shake with milk.
Due to different demands and activities its not always easy to get the proverbial "six small meals a day" in. Also water intake sometimes gets messed up.
But I'm a card-carrying "evening grazer and forager".
This is typical of the Pacific Northwest Ironus Pumpus which can be found usually shortly after dusk silently rummaging through the nearest convenient refrigerator for left-overs and pizza-slices. (Rigger & Metz 1993)
The Ironus Pumpus mostly hunts alone but oftentimes a mate will be nearby. This particular species will feed all day if conditions allow but has a penchant for chowing down while watching evening/late-night television. Considered harmless as long as there is a plentiful food supply.(Valens 1996) Can be approached for hand-feeding and will accept bon-bons that are left in its natural nesting area.
The original Ironus Pumpus species of pre-1970 is almost extinct now (Clemens 1998)and has been replaced by a sub-species, the Urbanus Softea Ironus Pumpus which has a higher bodyfat content but domesticates quite readily. Ther are only 400 of the pre-1970 species in existence today.
The Ironus Pumpus is gregarious and can be seen congregating in fitness clubs in an effort to recapture it's pre-1970 traits but the effort is futile(Johnson & Schmidt-1978) as the genes are permanently altered due to dietary changes and toxic food chemicals (Wallenby 1981)
The Pacific NorthWest Ironus Pumpus and it's eastern cousin are harvested commercially by fitness clubs, diet centers, and personal trainers. Last year the gross annual catch was 13 million in the continental USA and Canada.(Piklen 2006). Prized for its bottomless wallet and inability to stop eating the Ironus Pumpus remains at the top of the list for annual revenue.
The Ironus Pumpus is harvested year round (Sanders 2001) but peak periods are right after Christmas and early Spring.
Hort Fri, July 21st, 2006, 09:20 PM Hunger is a very misleading sensation. Often time it might be just active digestion... and frequently it's just thirst. Something to think about.
tedpod Fri, July 21st, 2006, 11:55 PM i love food so much that im not sure when im hungry...sometimes when im taking the last bite of my meal..im thinking...MAN! 3 more hours and i get to eat again....i dunno..i love to eat...good thing i really like chicken , oats, veggies and such..or id be screwed, or wellid be fat AGAIN
but my breakfast is huuuuuuuuuuuge.....well not really it jsut seems like alot...plus i work out in the a.m now so ive taken in just over 1000 cals by noon
mikeg Sun, July 23rd, 2006, 08:00 PM I've never been hungry in the morning regardless of what, when, or how much I have eaten the previous day. Until I started working out and eating healthy, I never ate breakfast. Now about all I can stomach is a good-tasting protein shake like chocolate Nitrean, and maybe a little fruit like grapes or berries. And I have to force myself to do that. Left to my own devices, I wouldn't eat until lunch.
bfl_redhead Sun, July 23rd, 2006, 11:15 PM I'm never hungry in the morning....
whether I eat or not the evening before..
I eat in the morning because I must..but it's forcing all the way!
