I am about to add the regular DHEA to my supplement and Vitamin regimin because I am post-menopausal and my testosterone levels have diminished (not tested but I can tell by my physiological responses to sex...) I am only going to add 5 mg's a day, which is what is recommended to women for such purposes. I am hoping for no side effects.

But I am disturbed by the following report that many DHEA supplements, even those that claim pharmeceutical grade have only a fraction of the DHEA they claim: http://www.consumerlab.com/results/dhea.asp
They give a list of 3 they have tested and approved. There are 11 more but you have to become a subscriber to find out what they are and I am not willing to do that.

I bought Maximum Nutirients' 5 mg DHEA from BB.com which claims to be pharmaceutical grade. It is not on the list of 3 of the above site. I don't know much about brands of supplement. Does anyone know about the reliability of this brand?

Another thread I posted a while back, someone who had positive experiences with it with his wife recommended Enzymatic Therapy, which is on the above reports list. But I did not see it until today which is well-after I bought the Maximum Nutrients Brand at BB.com

I hate to throw away a good bottle but I also don't want to waste my time. Anyone know Maximum Nutrients' rep for quality control?

Well, I took the DHEA and it definitely made me energized and a little speedy. My cardio was definitly improved after several days of being low energied. I am doing LISS anyway but I usually go at the high end of my range. For the last few days I was at the low end. Today I was in the middle. SO at least for that, I am happy about the DHEA brand I have.

I will keep people posted if it makes me horny... :D

No, I have not heard of this brand, sorry. :( When I was looking into it a while back, I saw BB.com's "Higher Power" brand as a really cheap route, but I don't think their brand is very reputable. That's about the extent of my knowledge on DHEA, sorry. :(

Looking forward to hearing about your experience with this though.

Just as a side note, if you have a history of cancer within your family you may want to reconsider using DHEA, like most supplements, the research and findings are so hotly debated by both sides that it's hard to tell what the truth is, but some studies on DHEA as well as other pre-cursors have been shown to accelerate the development and heighten the risk of cancer, I don't really believe it but because I have a very strong history of cancer in my immediate family i've never even considered it nor would I ever try it.

Besides, anything that makes the list of banned substances in most collegiate, international and pro sports is usually something i'll stay away from, i'd hate to fail a drug test because of something as trivial as DHEA  , it's also probably not gonna be able to survive it's next go around in congress and will be eventually added to the banned list of controlled substances.

I do know people who have taken it without side effects, namely the brand AST which most of them swear by, don't know much about the particular brand you mentioned though, wish I could be more help...

Yes, I checked into more detail about the cancer promoting possibilities and I don;t fall under any of the risk categories. By the way, it is just a suspicion and not a conslusion.

Unfortunately, AST does not make 5 mg capsules only 50 and 100, which is generally recomended for men. Though the low dosage route, which I am taking it is 5-10mg's for women and 25-30 for men.

I think the quantity depends on your goals. Mine is more of a hormone replacemtn therapy.

I woke up with a nightmare this morning, the type I ususally associate with drug induced ones. I am prone to vivid dreams and nightmares. If that is a possible side effect of adrug, it will usually happen to me.

Does anyone know if nightmares can be a side effect of DHEA?

I am also going through a lot of emotional turmoil for some months now and it just increased this past week with an unhappy incident. So I have not been sleeping too well anyway. But the nightmare was not the typical kind I have and as I said, one more associated with drug inducement.

Sorry to hear about the unhappy incident Justitia. I hope things get better for you.

I don't know anything about DHEA causing nightmares, however I would assume that changes to hormones and t-levels might induce some awkward changes. Nightmares are not one side effect I've heard about though. Sorry, wish I could offer some help. :d_frown:

Rememer, Justitia, DHEA eventualy becomes a steroid in your system, even if it has to go through multiple conversions to get there. You very well may experience steroid reactions, including mood swings and nightmares. DHEA was the one prohormone that made it under the radar through congress.

Congress wants to ban everything including our multivitamins.
And speaking of which  , DHEA will not be banned anytime soon because too many older senators enjoy it's "fountain of youth" qualities. It's only evil if they don't use it...

Yeah I suppose being a dietary supplement lobbyist and having a senator in your pocket would be pretty good to have :p Mr Hatch won't be around forever though and he's been the loudest voice when it's come to the opposition.
Are you playing a sport which is drug tested? Curious...
Played, but not anymore :( but that was actually more directed towards the student athletes we have here that do play college sports.

Never heard nightmares, but restless nights and trouble sleeping aren't way out in left field, maybe just a lot on your mind or you watched a particulary scary movie? :D
