View Full Version : Brooklyncook's 16-week Cut-A-Thon: 8/15 - 12/15
brooklyncook Thu, August 4th, 2005, 04:34 PM HersheyGirl's last challenge was motivation a-plenty. I dropped body fat, gained some muscle, and met some new people -- all of which were pluses in my book.
Now comes the next phase for me -- more cutting. I did good, but I can do better.
So here's my thoughts. From now until August 14th (Sunday), get back in the swing of things. Prepare your mind, prepare your body. Focus on the 16 weeks ahead.
August 15th, weigh in, measure in, however you care to do it. Set your goals, look ahead to what this Autumn holds in terms of weddings, parties, holidays, and plan in advance how you'll attack these.
Every Monday, weigh-in.
December 15th: you, improved. Tell your family to hold off on buying you clothes for gifts until after you've hit this point. :D
So...who's with me?
Lkwdchum Fri, August 5th, 2005, 05:40 PM This sounds awesome...
brooklyncook Sat, August 6th, 2005, 10:26 AM Nice! Glad to have you aboard on this one!
I plan on doing another weigh-in for myself on Monday (the 8th) so I can get a more concrete idea of what my goals should be, and then take it from there.
vatechguy Sat, August 6th, 2005, 11:57 AM Brooklyn - how tall are you?
We gonna weigh in with some photo scrutiny too? Maybe a start and end pic?
I'm working on really getting my head in the game this week - so this is right up my alley.

I'm 6 feet even.
Yeah, pics may be a good idea with this one, especially since I'm still not confident in my prowess with a caliper.
westside Sun, August 7th, 2005, 01:21 PM I'll join you guys. I'm cutting aswell. ;)
EnemytoPandas Sun, August 7th, 2005, 03:10 PM Yeah, count me in bro!

brooklyncook Sat, August 13th, 2005, 10:04 AM Well, we're a couple of days away from the beginning. So far, we've got:
Lkwdchum
vatechguy
westside
EnemytoPandas
auscott
and myself.
Anyone else who's reading and wants to get in on this, post!
I've had the occasional cheat meal, but have kept up the lifting. I've got a wedding later on this month that I'm looking forward to going to, just from the progress I've already made. These folks haven't seen me in *months*.
brooklyncook Tue, August 16th, 2005, 08:38 AM Well, the games have begun!
My starting weight is 211 lbs., estimated 19% BF.
My goal by December 15th: 200 lbs. and 14% BF.
EnemytoPandas Tue, August 16th, 2005, 08:34 PM Well I was at my biggest 3 or so years ago. Was at 315 and actually an inch and half shorter. Got myself down to where I am now with off and on dieting and exercising. I'm all set to lose weight in a more proper way to actually get my BF down. I'm excited! LEts do this!
Age-22
Height- 5'9
Starting weight- 257 lb / 31.4 BF% (electronic reading)
Measurements coming soon.
Goal #1- 230 lbs
I'm ready to go man!
vatechguy Wed, August 17th, 2005, 08:10 PM Today I got the electrical measurement - 17.4% - and I think its pretty close in my case. 222lbs.
At 6' 2" I could stand to loose 20-30 pounds easily......
Hope everyone is hard at it this week!
Royality Wed, August 17th, 2005, 08:44 PM Right first challenge for me. :)
I am 162lbs and about 24%bf.
My target will be 140lbs, what bodyfat I get I will not know.
Wish me luck guys. :tu:

Where do you go for an electrical measurement? Is this something done through a gym, personal trainer, or doctor?
I'd love to find out where I stand right now.
EnemytoPandas Thu, August 18th, 2005, 02:16 PM Well, i'm pretty damn sore today, guess that work out did some good! First time i've actually did some weight/resistance training in a while. Did it for about 30 minutes, had my shirt wet. Although not as much as it usually is after cardio.
brooklyncook Sat, August 20th, 2005, 01:51 PM I'm looking forward to a good long workout today and tomorrow -- I always have a bit of extra time on Sat and Sun to get in everything I want.
I'm debating starting SGX next month, especially after seeing the good testimonials all over JSF.

Our Gym (the YMCA) has "Meet the Nurse" days every Wednesday where she hangs out in the lobby doing this, giving Cholesterol screenings and some other little tests. Every once in a while when I see her I'll stop and let her "zap" me.
She uses this little doo-hicky - http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/om/body.html (Or one pretty similar)

Thanks. I do keep a journal here - http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=14006
I lost my first 60 lbs or so the wrong way (starving myself to death) - who knows what kind of progress I might have made doing it the right way....!!
wh0ah Sat, August 20th, 2005, 03:31 PM i want to join this challenge. i think it'll motivate me to lose weight and be a better person.

Welcome aboard! I've found that the challenges are a huge help, and I benefitted from the last one I was in.
Royality Sat, August 20th, 2005, 07:21 PM Well a Chinese tonight says I already put on a pound. :D
I NEED to sign up to a gym otherwise I won't do excersise. My diet isn't good enough to lose significant weight at the moment. :(
MOTIVATE DAMNIT, MOTIVATE!!!

Okay -- well, you know you need to sign up for a gym, go sign up! If the need is there, and you've got the impetus behind you, do it! Call work on Monday, tell them you're coming in late, and go straight to the gym you want to belong to.
As far as your diet goes, how is it not good enough?
vatechguy Sun, August 21st, 2005, 09:39 AM 222lbs.
Weekly checkin - Proud to commit to 220 this shiny Sunday morning.
2 lbs a week is right where I want to be.
Even had my bi-weekly splurge on Tuesday on my way back from Orlando - chocolate cake.....mmmmm.
Thats what its all about fellas - keeping it under control for a week or two - then you can enjoy the not-so-good-for-you stuff in limited quantities guilt free!
:tu: Hope everyone's liftin hard and watching that diet. Recently I've been addicted to fitday (http://www.fitday.com) for tracking diet. Its free - and its pretty cool.
EnemytoPandas Tue, August 23rd, 2005, 12:10 AM Starting weight- 257 lb
Current Weight- 251.5 lb
This week went much better than I expected. My diet could have been much cleaner...but hell, I'll take what I can get! I'm more motivated to keep it clean.
soz Tue, August 23rd, 2005, 12:45 AM I think I'm going to join this challenge. It fits perfectly with my goals before christmas.
I'm not going to check my BF every week. I'll just workout hard and have it measured before the end of the challenge. I tend to focus too much on little things and all I really need to do is keep working out hard and eating properly and I'll see what the result is at the end. It'll also make it a greater suprise.
Starting Weight - 8.14 - 205lbs ~ 24% BF
Weight - 8.22 - 200.2lbs
brooklyncook Tue, August 23rd, 2005, 06:32 AM Good! Glad to have you on with us!
I've pretty much ruled out measuring the BF each week myself, although if I either (a) come across someone with one of those electronic measuring devices like vatechguy mentioned, or (b) buy one myself, then I'd start. However, for now I'll stick to the scale, and my own personal appearance.
Did the weigh-in this morning (since for me it's every Tuesday): 211 lbs. I seem to have plateaued off here. My workouts have been good; I kicked ass on Saturday, and Sunday worked other muscles so as not to overtrain the ones I worked Saturday.
Yesterday was a day off.
I'm ready to get back in there and have at it; problem being, I can't get over 211. My upper body is looking better (to me); the arms are coming along and the chest is getting there. It's all midsection at this point -- that's the problem area. Someone at work suggested "more sit-ups," and I didn't want to get into how spot reduction doesn't work.
On the upside, I'm definitely using more weight than I was initially when I work out. I'm curling 60 lbs now, which is probably my favorite of all the exercising. Killing my arms is a good time in my book. ;)
I'm hitting the gym today, tomorrow and Thursday; Friday through Monday morning I'm out of town for a wedding, but I've already got info on a gym that lets non-members in for $10 a visit. I don't want to kill the momentum!
Everyone keep up the good work!
vatechguy Tue, August 23rd, 2005, 09:46 AM Someone at work suggested "more sit-ups," and I didn't want to get into how spot reduction doesn't work.
Your immediate response to these people should be - sitting up doesn't help show off your midsection - putting DOWN the fork does.
And leave it at that. ;)
hemburger Thu, August 25th, 2005, 07:58 PM Hello all,
I am joining a bit late but have the same goal.
My profile:
Height: 6 ft.
Weight: 177 lbs
Body fat: 25%
I want to reduce the fat to 15%. Don't know if its possible but will try. I've got a wedding on 12/15 and my own on 12/25. Of course, I want to look good for mine ;)
I am off now to workout my shoulders and maybe 6 minutes of HIIT.
Hemang.
brooklyncook Mon, August 29th, 2005, 03:21 PM Well, this past weekend was the last major event on my calendar where I'd be eating "dirty" (versus clean).
I'm currently weighing in at 214. I'll admit it, I went a little nuts. Being in my hometown and celebrating all weekend...I got a lot of compliments from people I'd not seen in ages, telling me how good I looked -- but I ate the wrong stuff.
I'm back to concentrating now. The next major hurdle is going to be Thanksgiving, but I've got all of September and October to make magic happen and keep working hard.
vatechguy Mon, August 29th, 2005, 09:36 PM I'm currently weighing in at 214.
Probably a lot of water/sodium weight.
I'm feeling pretty good winding down the month of August - in the past 6 weeks I've brought the BF% down almost a full 2 points.
I saw my lowest weight in a long while on Sunday morning - 215! :D

Congratulations, man, that's fantastic! :claplow:
Royality Fri, September 16th, 2005, 12:23 PM 5 weeks in and I've lost 4lbs.
Not terrible but definetely not what I was looking for.
I am not calorie counting however, I am just eating healthy stuff and mucho water. I also weeded all the diet coke out of my diet.
Only excuse I can think of is the fact that I just started school again and I'm finding it hard to eat properly there. :( However, just today I learnt they seal low calorie chicken pieces which taste great and are full of protein. Also I buy grapes to fill me up from there because they are lush.
I also got a 4 month membership to a gym so that should help. Been about 6 times, though I am aiming for more around 4 times a week. It's really hard to find time with school, work and dieting.
Oh well. I hope to be 2lbs lighter by next week.
brooklyncook Sun, September 18th, 2005, 10:14 AM I have to get back on the wagon here.
I went home to my girlfriend's mom's place in VA over Labor Day. Since then, I've been slacking big time. It's really rather disappointing -- I mean, I should know better.
I've probably put on a couple of pounds -- I haven't even bothered to weigh myself. I haven't ballooned out or anything, but I'm not pleased with how I'm feeling lately.
