View Full Version : Can't use whey, what's the next best thing?
karatetricker Thu, August 4th, 2005, 12:23 PM Well, I've been putting off my next order of Whey Protein until after today when I had an appointment to see a kidney specialst due to problems I had last year that are nothing too serious, but I won't get into. Anyway, long story short, I mentioned how I had been using whey protein and regardless of how "safe" the stuff is, he would prefer I stopped using it. I had stopped for several months and then started back up again, but looks like I'll be stopping for good now.
What non-supplement would you say is the next best source of protein for PWO? I use dextrose too, so carbs are covered. Is there anything that doesn't require cooking you can think of? The cheaper the better. :tu:
Thanks.
Kino Thu, August 4th, 2005, 12:34 PM Did you get clarification as to whether they wanted you to stay away from whey...or do they want you off of the high protein intake? When many doctors hear the mention of supplements...they automatically assume that the patient/client is overdoing it. If you're getting this advice in regards to kidney function...they may be thinking all protein above and beyond what they consider normal. (whatever that is) You may want to ask what amount of protein intake they would feel comfortable with you maintaining.
There's always the EAA/BCAA route...if you want to keep the amino intake high while dropping protein intake/processing.
Proteins function is to be converted to amino acids that the body can utilize, so...

Nah, it wasn't so much the amount as opposed to the supplement itself. I consume more protein than the average person, I'm sure, but I am nowhere near the levels of most people here. I take in maybe 100-140g/day tops and I weigh about 157 lb.

On the surface, this doesn't make sense, ulnless I am overseeing a critical aspect. In other words, you can have steak, milk, chicken, fish... but not whey?? What is it about the whey specifically, that has the physician concerned?

Not sure. Let's pretend I am allergic to whey. What would be another good PWO protein option?

A whole food meal with additional amino acid and dessicated liver tabs.

Why not just buy soy protien instead of whey protein? They make it with identical nutritional value. Its less of a complete strand of protein, but its still protein. Would that work?
A couple times when I was just starting out and only occasionally having a protein beverage PWO, I bought Soy instead of Whey protien powder and really didn't find much difference in the taste or anything.
Also, I think there is actually a third type of protein suppliment too but i can't recall what it is...
tensdanny Thu, August 4th, 2005, 03:54 PM If you've got balls of steel karate, just down 3 raw eggs with a lot of dex sprinkled on them.
Otherwise, there is always the option of soy or egg protein powders. In terms of solid foods, I guess chicken, pork, or steak?
It is tough because most protein sources correspond with fat which is a no-no pwo.
slowpoke Thu, August 4th, 2005, 04:02 PM I was going to suggest egg whites. I've been blending in about a dozen of them a day with PWO or breakfast smoothie. They mix pretty good with cottage cheese, but it's not much on flavor.
I've been eating so many eggs, I may be cheaper to buy some chickens.
Kino Thu, August 4th, 2005, 04:08 PM I'm all over Mastover's idea, since I've got the aminos, BCAA's and Ultra 40's at home already. :D
Egg protein powders right now are expensive as hell because of that chicken virus thing overseas. Beverly quit making 100% Egg all together, because it just wasn't cost feasable. It taste like crap too... :(

Haha. Realistically, I acquired a taste for it and enjoyed drinking it. This was the best protein powder I've ever used. Darn bird flu!
karatetricker Thu, August 4th, 2005, 04:46 PM You couldn't pay me enough to down raw egg whites. I guess I'll just make egg beaters or something when I get home unless someone else has any other good ideas.
I'd prefer to limit my soy protein as I already consume a good amount of it between breakfast and lunch.
michael2938 Thu, August 4th, 2005, 05:17 PM I guess I'll just make egg beaters or something when I get home unless someone else has any other good ideas. Grilled chicken and water in a blender? :eat: I can't imagine drinking chicken chunks. :p

TheLemonSong Thu, August 4th, 2005, 05:31 PM Ok, here's a good way to take down the egg whites...
Buy yourself some chicken broth (usually the kcals are nearly nothing, but if you want bouillon cubes work too)...heat up however much you want to near boiling...then beat the egg whites until they're well beaten (I like to do mine until they're foamy almost) then slowly (can't stress that enough SLOWLY) pour them in to the hot broth while stirring the broth...it makes a really quick and delicious faux-eggdrop soup. I add hot sauce to mine. I bet you could "drink" like 30 egg whites like that in a matter of minutes :)!

Just one of many brands that make soy protein.
HevyMetal Thu, August 4th, 2005, 10:44 PM Tuna is supposed to be pretty good for bodybuilding. Ditto for salmon and chicken. Egg whites also. I would certainly go for the BCAA's. Heard Tofu was good too.
tennisball Thu, August 4th, 2005, 11:25 PM Use whey and limit your other protein intake, and spread it throughout the day. Whey gets broken down into amino acids just like any other food source; it's just that whey is a little quicker digesting. GPs and even urologists aren't nutritionists (they usually only take one nutrition class during med school).
However, I'm no scientist or nutritionist either. If you have a kidney problem, maybe you should look at your entire diet, rather than a singular food.

Yes. Or if you're looking for another powder for PWO shake, consider egg protein. But this puzzles me very much. Egg powder or normal food should have no favorable impact on kidney function. If your doctor can't explain to you why whey would be any worse than anything else, I would be wary. It would make me question his overall judgment and ability.

Hmm. I didn't realize that. They sell them at my gym. Not sure wha the prices are like these days given what you've said. I've never looked into it.
