View Full Version : Losing Fat
Ve3Mike Mon, August 1st, 2005, 12:14 PM Hi, I am 18 years old and I am currently 5'11 and 166 lbs. I checked my BMI recently on a chart and it said it was 23. I still have some fat on me, around the chest area and legs. I was wondering If I should stick to a good diet and cardo or should I add some weight training in there?

Beyond that you won't get much help unless you tell more about your goals.

Why would that be? I thought Cardo burns the fat?

Cardio-free workout schedules are an advanced concept. Generally, they involve doing exercises at a high enough, constant intensity to keep your heart rate up, so you get the benefits of cardio, too. But if you're just starting out with weight lifting, take it slow, and keep doing your cardio. Save the cardio-free workouts for when you're a little more experienced.
But, yeah, if you're really short on time and have to choose one, choose the weight-lifting. I love cardio and, like many people here, wouldn't have made much progress without it, but weight lifting (or "resistence training") will help you more with body composition all by itself.
Yes, you should definitely be doing weight workouts. You'll look better and feel better pretty much right out of the box, expecially if you're 18 years old.
But diet is #1 - keep eating healthy! At only 18, a balanced diet and some hard work in the gym can get you in great shape fairly quickly.

If your body is a car (that runs on a fuel which is at least partly fat, the analogy is as follows:
Cardio revs the engine harder, so you burn faster for a short period of time.
Weightlifing gives you a bigger engine, so you are always burning more fuel.
Over time, the bigger engine will burn more fuel than the small - even if it isn't revved as much as the small engine.
It's not a perfect analogy, but it's pretty good.
