View Full Version : The Milk Diet?
dist0rted~ Sat, July 30th, 2005, 12:09 AM I've heard people say that drinking 3 glasses of milk a day (Versus 0-1) can double the rate at which you lose weight by burning fat and maintaining muscle mass...
Is there any truth to this?
tennisball Sat, July 30th, 2005, 12:13 AM No. This is a daily industry misrepresentation of some claims about protein and calcium. I think there was a thread about this a while back...

There is something that should tip you off as to why that claim is complete bullshit. There is no one magic food you can eat to suddenly double the rate that you burn fat. The only thing that's gonna do that is liposuction.

And even then, liposuction won't change the rate at which you burn fat, liposuction merely removes it leaving your body to burn (at the same rate) what remains.... they don't suck all of it out. :)

JK2005 Sat, July 30th, 2005, 10:04 PM I did read a few articles where calcium was the key which aids weight loss.
But milk is one thing that plays suc an important role in getting your balanced food. Its undoubtedly one of the best source of protein (for muscles) and calcium (for bones). Weight loss or not, milk IS good - very much so for vegetarians.
On another note, smoking decreases the body's ability to absorb calcium. This was one of the reasons I quit smoking. The metabolic rate increase by smoking is not worth the catastropic effects of it, lack of energy and also the point above.

When you grow up you get to drink beer.
I wonder how many other people recognized this quote.

Read those and form your own opinions. If someone here can come up with some good reasons as to why these threads are bunk, i'll be suprised.
I am cutting and drink 3 glasses of milk daily. Obviously it is calories and I account for it as such. But, it hasn't hindered my progress and I feel it has benefited me.
So, if you are on a 2k a day calorie diet you need to account those 3 glasses into that. Which may mean skipping a meal. But, its a meal I don't mind skipping, I like my milk.
Plus, not getting the shits from it is a definate plus!
TheLemonSong Mon, August 1st, 2005, 07:15 PM I could be wrong, but was it Jeremy Likness that had written an article about many people having problems with dairy that made them retain fat (I hesistate to say lactose intolerant, but I think that might have been part of it) and not even really knowing it?? I know personally when I cut out dairy my progress went significantly quicker.
Thrice per day just sounds a bit disproportionate.
Also, milk is a simple carb with very little protien and for the amount a moderate bit of fat (none EFAs as far as I understand). You can guzzle all the milk you want 3 times a day, but I don't think that thats such a good idea. If you're staying within your calorie range you can eat ONLY McDonalds BigMacs, and it won't "hinder your progress" but that doesn't make it a healthy choice...
jfordyce Mon, August 1st, 2005, 07:24 PM i think the debate with milk boils down to what your goals are. If you are cutting at around 2000-2200 calories per day, I think it is smarter to get more of your calories from "solid" foods so you will feel fuller and be less likely to overeat. However, if you are bulking, milk can come in handy to add quality protein and low GI carbs without making you feel that much fuller, which is a problem for myself. If you simply add 3 cups of skim milk a day to your diet, that is 24 grams of protein and like 30 grams of carbs and no fat, which is a good start which switching from a cut to a bulk. It is a lot easier for me to bulk without eating a lot of unhealthy foods simply by adding milk and lots of juice back into my diet. You can easily add 600 calories this way and not feel too much fuller.
Oh and another thing I should add, I may be a bit biased in this debate because I am the son of a dairy farmer and grew up on a dairy farm :D
Support my father!!!
Haha, just kidding, but seriously I would think at least one cup of milk a day would be good for anyone, simply to get some quality calcium and prevent bone loss. I guess I may be a living testament to the "milk builds strong bones" myth: I have drank milk prolifically throughout my days and I have yet to break a bone; I am 20 years old.
And seriously, albeit expensive, who doesn't like fat free cheese?
tennisball Mon, August 1st, 2005, 08:07 PM Did you read the ORIGINAL post? 3 glasses a day double fat loss? Absolutely not. I drink more than 3 glasses during a cut or a bulk.
Milk protein and calcium are great, but admittedly, the dairy industry has been trying to capitalize on the recent research linking calcium DEFICINCIES and hindered weight loss. I don't think they're going out of their way to debunk any false claims about milk's effectiveness (or ineffectiveness) in terms of losing fat.

Yes, sorry. I thought this thread was more about bashing milk all-together, than just the "fat loss" qualities of it. Which is why I posted the links.
I wouldn't say it causes more fat loss. But, I would say that it is better than just drinking water.
