View Full Version : Parkour (Freerunning)
jonathan D Thu, July 28th, 2005, 04:54 PM Hey guys i have recently got into a "sport" called Parkour aka Freerunning. I'm not sure if you guys have heard of it but I have been doing it for about 1 week now. What you do it go around vault over things, run on things, jump off things. It's hard to explain it's I will say gymnastics out side. To give you a better idea what it is look it up on the internet or download a video from limewire, just put in Parkour or Freerunning. Anywho when i did it wow....... I work out and everything but this gave me the workout of my life the next day I couldnt walk, it's a full body workout I'm tellin you. My question is can I use this as my cardio im climbing running and jumping everywhere for about 1 hour. Thanks for replys. :jumping:

Long story short: if you get your heart rate up for a sustained amount of time, count it as cardio.

Exactly. However, I would guess that most people cannot do that kind of cardio for long. It's like most sports -- heart rate goes really high for about 20 seconds, but then you need to rest for several minutes (slow jog). To determine the value as cardio conditioning, I would want to wear a heart rate monitor for that sort of thing to make sure my heart rate stayed high, but not too high. It obviously has far more fitness value than just cardiovascular conditioning, though. It looks like a great workout if you can do it.

What I am thinking about is that even if I had to try this, where would I do it? On the roads??
JabbaTheGutt Thu, July 28th, 2005, 09:30 PM I like to watch 'em go but I think there would be too much risk of injuries to do it as serious daily cardio... I think I twisted my ankle just watching it on TV the other day. :D

My own opinion is that you'd be hard pressed to find many exercise routines that are as good as this one, because it utilizes so many principles in fitness, ie. fast twitch muscle fiber, larger muscle groups, entire body, cardio...I could go on. You certainly do need a high fitness level for this though, as it will eventually wear on the joints and/or result in sprains. With that said the best fitness teachers are children....I mean it, we condition ourselves out of the things we need most as we grow older, exercise is one of them. Who do you think came up with free running first? The question is "why did we ever stop?"

KMD Mon, September 12th, 2005, 01:14 AM that link ^ was not just parkour. It had some aspects of it but it is mostly tricking. By tricking I mean doing flips and what not.
I have however now been doing Parkour for about 6 months. Its pretty fun. I've been in Martial arts now since I was 9 so going on 11 years now(I 'm turning 20). My martial arts styles are BBJ(Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) and Myui Thi. I have been tricking now for the past 5 years and its been fun.
Anywho with Parkour you tend to look at the world in a whole new way. At my college I see tons of places where I can trick/parkour but I don't want to because of the girls. But ya any PK, tricking or any of those related to it I will try to answer them to the best of my ability but I don't know everything.

dreadsword Mon, September 12th, 2005, 03:39 PM Wow - we used to call this "street trials" here - going for a jog and mixing in lots of that sort of stuff. Interesting that its actually a discipline of sorts... won't be too long before TonyHawk/ESPN/??? and the rest of the business world co-opt, package it, and sell it to highschoolers.
Chopaholic Mon, September 12th, 2005, 04:53 PM That sound?
That's my knees crying...
chicanerous Mon, September 12th, 2005, 05:21 PM Heh. The movie Ong-Bak (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368909/) has a pretty good "parkour" sequence. The flavor that combines free running and (more spectacular than needed) tricks.
KMD Mon, September 12th, 2005, 09:44 PM ya I don't want to fall in front of them lol. But yes Ong bak shows a bit of parkour its more tricking then park our though.
