View Full Version : Alternating LISS/HIIT?
Wonder Boy Thu, July 28th, 2005, 01:28 PM Hey guys-- regarding my cardio, I was curious if it might be a good idea to switch between LISS and HIIT daily? I am currently doing a 3 day split lifting, with (typically) HIIT on my off-days. However, I don't feel like I'm cutting to my potential with only 3 days of cardio. If I were to continue to do HIIT T/R/Sat, and then throw in LISS after lifting M/W/F... could there be a positive effect?
I mean, would I be hindering myself at all by doing so? Or should I switch the HIIT to after lifting? (I didn't think so because the exertion might burn muscle before fat) But any input is welcome. Thanks!

I agree. From what I've been told, it's the best way to go.

Your body needs to recover after lifting. IMO, cardio after lifting is a bad idea.

is the same thing as moderate intensity long duration cardio?

If you're cutting, don't worry about it. Do some cardio.
JabbaTheGutt Thu, July 28th, 2005, 09:23 PM Or you could work your butt off on weights day and consider that a form of your H.I.I.T., then recover the next day while doing your L.I.S.S. cardio.
I'm thinking of starting something like that very soon...
Good luck & keep on movin',

Demon Knight Fri, July 29th, 2005, 02:46 AM From what I have read, doing an HIIT session or an LISS session differs a lot in what you are doing to your body. HIITs strength lies not in its calorie burning during the session but in the fact that it raises your metabolism significantly for the rest of the day and can take as little as 4 minutes to perform.LISS on the other hand does not require the intensity of HIIT and its advantage is it uses a higher percentage of fat during the calorie burn. Personally, I've tried LISS for a while now and I'm about to try HIIT first thing in the morning (15s sprint, 45s walk) just to see if this metabolism thing will help me. I should also mention that I recently bought Bill Phillips Body For Life. Although he is quite heavily promoting these Myoplex supplements, he has some very good points. The cardio that he suggests is a modified form of HIIT.
NEdge Fri, July 29th, 2005, 12:42 PM I have gotten the best results when mixing them up. However, I have never done cardio after lifting (apart from a 2 week stint when I was doing something 'drastic').
Since you will raise your metabolism from lifting, optimally I would do LISS on lifting days, but at a different time and HIIT on non-lifting days.
I don't think I'd ever do LISS directly after lifting though, it's just too long to go without having a PWO meal.
Having said all that, if your diet is good and you know your body well, I think you can get away with doing almost anything for 1-2 weeks without loosing too much muscle or strength.

I am not talking about the fact he wants to do more cardio, just when he wants to do it. I would make sure I didn't do it so close to lifting. Here is a good post from Swolecat on it.

While I don't recommend everyone do cardio after lifting, I certainly see no problem with it for most. I do it, several others I know do it and many professionals in the field recommend it.
Swolecat's word is not the end all be all.
Tempered Fri, July 29th, 2005, 02:14 PM If you notice I prefixed my first post with "IMO" and the second I said "I would". I never said it was the only thing to do. I was merely expressing my opinion and trying to back it up with information from someone who knows more than I do.
Wow, excuse me for talking.

No need to get defensive. Just throwing it out there that just because one professional in the field does it one way, doesn't mean it's the only way. Many people seem to think this is the case, but it is not.
I even agree that it is better to separate the two. However, when that is not an option and someone is cutting, cardio after lifting won't hurt you if you do it properly.
