View Full Version : Suggestion: Limit to the # of posts a user can make in the same thread
Sweet_16 Tue, July 26th, 2005, 10:15 AM Hey everyone,
I think it would be pretty useful for this new rule to be made. I think perhaps adminstrators and/or moderators should create some kind of block feature which will only allows a user to post up to a certain number of times within one thread.
I often go through threads wherein a user will post more than four or five times, either to randomly rant about something, tell off another user or add extra information to his/her original post rather than simply editing the original and adding the info there.
Anyway, this isn't meant to offend anybody and I'm most definitely not trying to point fingers at anyone here, but it's just a suggestion that I think what would be a useful feature to have in the JSF.
Toodles! :tu:
John Stone Tue, July 26th, 2005, 10:27 AM Such a rule would limit the ability for useful discussions to progress beyond a certain point.
Posts that violate forum rules should be reported to a moderator by using the "Report Post" icon. They will be dealt with swiftly.

People post multiple times in a thread to add information that they didn't think of the last time, or to argue what was said counter to their opinions, thus creating a lively discussion. The edit feature is for when a person posts something that they later decide was insensitive or too personal. I don't think it's meant as a tool to add information to their original thoughts. Otherwise, people couldn't follow what a person has said when they're just checking up on new posts.
The point of a thread is not to be as short and succinct as possible, but to show a wide variety of different thoughts and subthoughts on the subject.
Bluestreak Tue, July 26th, 2005, 12:38 PM With an upper limit on posts per thread, there'd be 82 separate "Streams of Consciousness" in the Journal section by now...
Inane banter post: done.

You're right, I didn't quite think of those threads. However there are a few that don't create great discussions, in my mind I was referring to those.
Thanks for the responses though, that's what happens when I'm not fully awake in the morning. :p
Nico Wed, July 27th, 2005, 01:53 PM I think what you wanted was a feature that would limit one person's bad posts. Unfortunately there is no function in PHP that can do this for you.
1FastGTX Wed, July 27th, 2005, 07:18 PM Limiting "bad posts" is a good idea in theory but I cannot really see a way, technically, that this can be done. Sure you have filters but they are mostly for replacing words or filtering out things like swear words or "visit randomanabolicsalesfromoverseaswebsite.com" type things.
Such maintenance, IMO, is best done by moderators and I really feel JSF does a fantastic job with this so far.
Limiting posts per user to each thread wouldn't be a good idea. It would limit the good debate that we see on this forum. It would also ruin journals (as Blue stated), although I assume you could apply such filters to only particular sections of the forum. (I've used DNN forums as well as a few PHP forums and have seen this functionality.)

Right. It's really a matter of opinion. To you and I something like "your post sucked, kiss my butt" is a bad post. But how does a computer decide what is good or bad? (Besides the obvious filtering of certain words.)

I should've added one of these  to the end of my post.
I'm not sure what type of post she was objecting to-because if you keep reading a thread long enough to see someone repeatedly posting-what caused you to keep reading?
It reminds me of people who want to censor Howard Stern. They always say "I don't listen to his trash" then proceed to ask "Did you hear what he said this morning?"
A post that violates John's rules should be reported. Otherwise there shouldn't be censorship. Of you tire of someone continually posting in a thread then call them out for what's bothering you or avoid the thread.
chicanerous Wed, July 27th, 2005, 10:18 PM If you tire of someone continually posting in a thread then call them out for what's bothering you or avoid the thread.
And, by call them out, please respectfully discuss with them in a Private Message what exactly you have a problem with! Don't do so in the thread itself.
Kino Thu, July 28th, 2005, 11:13 AM An IGNORE THIS MEMBER option might be nice for those concerned.

Not sure if you were suggesting John offer one or people who dislike particular members use it but there already is one of those.

How does this work? Do you not see threads where the ignored member has posted? Or do you not see their posts?

There ya go.
And for anyone wondering, it's under the User C/P towards the bottom of the list of options. It's paired with Buddy/Ignore List.
