View Full Version : 8% Body Fat Challenge
Doug Miles Mon, July 11th, 2005, 09:05 PM The goal of this challenge is simple, to reach 8% (or lower) bodyfat by July 2006. Another forum member (jacknutz) and I have decided to begin this year long challenge to finally rid ourselves of unwated fat, while maintaining (or hopefully increasing) lean body mass.
The challenge will begin today, July 11, 2005. Anyone is welcome to join us for all or part of the year, depending on where you currently stand. I am sure there are a lot of people here who have accomplished the 8% mark, and are therefore enjoying their summer showing off their success. While we can't join the festivities this summer, we can certainly make sure we do next summer!
A year is a long time, so I think it'll be difficult to stick to a strict picture posting schedule. I think every few weeks to a month should suffice, but feel free to post pics more often if you like.
Good luck!
Doug Miles Mon, July 11th, 2005, 09:25 PM Ok, here are my starting stats:
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: 197.4 lbs
BF%: 26%
I calculate my BF by averaging 3 BF numbers. 1.) body fat scale, 2.) calipers (self administered), and 3.) Healthcentral.com. I think this gives a pretty accurate number.
Assuming my numbers are correct, this gives me roughly 51 lbs of fat, and 146 lbs of lean mass. I am picking a target of 165 lbs and 8% BF. At that weight/BF, I would have 13 lbs of fat, and 152 lbs of lean mass. So this makes my job very clear. I need to lose 38 lbs of fat, and gain 6 lbs of lean mass in one year.
I will be doing early morning fasted cardio, and weight training (possibly a 3 day split) for at least the next few months. My diet is in check, if not low on calories. I really need to force myself to eat sometimes lately.
Pics to follow soon.
Doug Miles Wed, July 13th, 2005, 10:29 AM Well, day 3, and I feel great. I've been able to get some extra sleep, which has made it easier to get up in the morning for some cardio. Right now I'm using an elliptical (30-45 min., mod. intesity), but I would really like to do some roller blading. I can't do it where I live, so I will need to get up a little earlier and get to a park.
I plan to begin hitting the weights next week. I will start with a 3 day split, and go from there.
Doug Miles Thu, July 14th, 2005, 11:50 PM Was able to get in 45 min. of cardio this morning. I really need to find my MP3 player. Music is really what drives me. The time just flies by when I listen to music.
Jack Rowe Fri, July 15th, 2005, 11:19 AM Big Doug....
well I am down to 202.4 now, bf if staying the same which makes me think I am loosing muscle as well as fat, so I need to increase my cals. I'll post some new pics this weekend, I finally signed up as a bronze supporter today. As of today Friday July 13, 2005 I am 5'11, 202.4 ,29% bf. I am doing cardio 5 times a week(early morning..fasted state). And in a week or two I will mix in weight training 3 times a week in the evenings.
Goal; 5'11, 170, 8%(or less) bf.
Doug Miles Fri, July 15th, 2005, 04:21 PM Sounds like our plan of attack is very similar.
I am holding steady at 194.4 lbs. Missed my cardio this morning (stayed up too late). And I won't get it in tomorrow morning either. We're going to a Trenton Thunder baseball game tonight, and then we'll be sleeping in tents on the field.
I was hoping to get pics up today, but that will have to wait til later in the weekend.
jsbrook Fri, July 15th, 2005, 04:29 PM I'd be interested in this challenge! I'm 5'7, mid 180s. I estimate about 12%. I was near 13% at the end of my bulk when I was professionally tested. I've lost a little bit of fat since then.
Doug Miles Sat, July 16th, 2005, 11:03 AM jsbrook, welcome. At 12% you should hit 8% or lower much sooner than us. The reason I like this long challenge is that I want to be 8% with some noticeable muscle (which it sounds like you have). What are your plans for your this cut? Or, how long do you think you will be cutting?
We went to the baseball game last night, and then got to pitch tents in the outfield, and see The Incredibles on the big screen. It was fun, but didn't get to bed until 1:30 am, and got up at 5:45 am. I did not however indulge in the Pizza, soda, Funnel Cake, Pretzels, cotton candy, etc. that everyone else was enjoying. Ok, I had a beer, or three. But hey, it's a ballgame, right?

Thanks-I have some solid muscle. I plan to and will have more. But leaning out first. I would like to hit 8% by the end of September. I have a wedding then. I don't think it should be a problem. I may get there sooner. If I do I'll just maintain until after the wedding and then do another bulk. I think you are taking a wise approach to maintain muscle by doing a long cut. For myself, I've started eating 2000 calories on off-days and 2200 on training days. For me, this should be enough to drop 1-2 lbs per week, at least for now. I don't plan to drop below 2000 unless I absolutely have to. And I'm more likely to up the cardio than do that. Right now, I've started doing 25 minutes of moderate intensity cardio 3 days per week. I'm weight training 3 days per week, full-body workouts. 2 days are heavy-one of them very heavy. The 3rd day is a strength-endurance day in a high-rep range. All of the days focus on compound, multi-joint exercises and supersets (antagonistic muscle pairings). Rest between sets is short. 1 day completely off each week.
Baseball game sounds fun. Incredibles was a great movie.
What do all your diets and training look like?
groomy Sun, July 17th, 2005, 09:37 PM Guys I'd love to join this one!
I'm 5'10" currently around 205lb and 17-18% bf.
I'll post results weekly and update photos when I can.
I do fasted cardio most mornings and lift 4 evening per week.
Look forward to seeing results from us all.

Welcome! I'm sure Doug Miles would welcome you as well. Sounds like you're getting things figured out for yourself. I'd recommend a scoop of protein powder before cardio rather than completely fasted. It will help preserve muscle, and the 100 calories will not hurt your fat loss. I probably won't be taking pictures till the end myself. But I have some at the beginning of my bulk and again midway through my bulk floating around in the media gallery somewhere.
Doug Miles Mon, July 18th, 2005, 01:01 AM Well, I had to compose this post in Word, and copy here. IE kept crashing, just when I was about to post. Note to self, get Firefox!
Anyway, yes, groomy glad to have you with us. I like your schedule, morning cardio, and a 4-day split. I’ve never had protein powder before cardio as jsbrook suggests, but I’ll try anything to preserve muscle. I’ll be doing a similar cut, but will probably start lifting 3 days per week, and gradually work into 4.
I’m having camera problems lately, and haven’t gotten many post worthy shots, but I am posting one anyway, to establish a starting point. I can hopefully post more soon.
Doug Miles Mon, July 18th, 2005, 01:07 AM I was able to get a shot of our baseball campout. This was the morning after.
groomy Mon, July 18th, 2005, 07:34 AM Well here's my starting pic for this challenge (taken last Friday, but close enough).

Thanks for the welcome. I've just started SGX program (one week in) so I'll be sticking to that plan for the next few months. Thanks for the pointers though.

Glad to be here Doug. I'm finding the morning cardio great at the moment. Although unlike over there it's Winter here in Australia and the mornings are dark, cold and wet at the moment. But we have to do these things!!!
I find the 4 day split great as I can usually get into the gym and out again within about 40 minutes. Well actuall that depends on how much chatting I do

What's up mate? Cold? I guess Western Australia is different than Sydney. I was in Sydney from February to July and never remember having to wear long sleeves cause of the weather. SGX is a great program. I'm sure it will do well by you.

our weather is supposed to be warmer than Sydney in general. We've had a few cold mornings with the temp dropping to almost 0 degrees. The days have been pretty good, almost like spring. There's a cold front ready to hit the coast so it's going to be wet for the rest of the week and into the weekend :(

Wow-that's about 32 degrees farenheit. I really lucked out with the weather while I was there. It stayed pretty warm the whole time.
Doug Miles Mon, July 18th, 2005, 11:25 PM Australia is on the top of my list of places to visit. I don't think a week goes by that I don't think about planning a trip there. I know a group of scuba divers who are headed there next month. Only wish I could join them.
jsbrook, not sure where in Pennsylvania you are, but you must be getting similar weather that we're getting in New Jersey. I think the heat index was 38 degrees (100 degrees Fahrenheit). The humidity was horrible.

Yeah-it's been hot and humid here. I'm outside philly. Definitely get to Australia if you get a chance; make sure you'll have time to explore and travel . I did a ton of diving there too. I lived in Sydney but was able to travel a lot.
Coachese Tue, July 19th, 2005, 01:21 PM HI Guys,
I've just passed Day 90 and have not been able to realize the commitment needed to get to where YOU and I want to go: 8-9% BF. I'd like to join up with this challenge to help kick start my FAT butt into gear.
Age: 36
Weight: 217
BF: 26% (according to an avg. of calipers and Healthcentral.com)
LBM Breakdown: 58.1 lbs of Fat; 158.9lbs LBM
Assuming that these measurements are accurate (and even if they are not, they are still useful as a ground zero/starting point) I will get to 180lbs by Thanksgiving (this is an adjustment of my orginal goal found in my Journal Thread). Once at this weight, I will determine BF% and adjust diet and exercise accordingly; all the time keeping the 8%, next Summer goal in sight.
Also, in order to achieve ANYTHING in this challenge, I am going to incorporate a 30-day no alcohol challenge to myself, with the understanding that fat loss, strength gain and not drinking go hand in hand (for me)!
Good luck to all.....!
I'll post Week 0 and 90 Day pictures here this afternoon/tomorrow morning.
-Steve
jsbrook Tue, July 19th, 2005, 03:02 PM Welcome, Steve!
groomy Tue, July 19th, 2005, 05:43 PM Hey Steve and I hope this challenge provides the motivation that you (and I) want.
Doug Miles Wed, July 20th, 2005, 12:00 AM Steve, I think you found the right place. Congratulations on the first 90 days. Just think, this time next year you'll be ripped! :tucool:

I live in NJ now, but I actually grew up in West Chester, PA.
Jack Rowe Wed, July 20th, 2005, 08:24 AM So far workouts are going well, I'm a little sore but down to 205 from 211. I'll post some pics asap. I don't have a digital cam so phone pics will have to do for now.
soz Wed, July 20th, 2005, 10:04 AM I would really like to join this challenge if that`s alright with you guys.
I dont really have any long term goals when it comes to fitness and I think this would be a good one.
Staring Stats:
Weight: 200lbs
Body Fat: 23% (46lbs)
Goal:
Weight: Between 175 and 185.
Body Fat: 8% (between 14lbs and 15lbs)

Coachese Wed, July 20th, 2005, 12:33 PM Welcome Soz...and thanks to everyone else for being around.
7/20/05 - Last night and today: So far so good, and that is all I can hope for!!
Keep it clean and work hard Guys!!!!!
Doug Miles Wed, July 20th, 2005, 11:41 PM Hey soz, looks like about 30 lbs should get you there. How tall are you? I have a feeling you are a little taller and a little leaner than me.

Lookin' good Coachese. Sometimes it's one day at a time, or even one minute at a time (at least for me).
groomy Thu, July 21st, 2005, 07:33 AM Wow what a leg workout! I love working my legs. By the end of the session they are trembling from having worked so hard.
This week is going great so far, diet has been pretty well spot on as has the cardio and weights. Only stuffed up Tuesday morning when I slept in. This was most unusual and was the first day in about three weeks where I didn't do a cardio session. Oh well, nevermind I had a good sleep in...
Hope everyone is going well and keeping on top of their plan. :tucool:
Jack Rowe Thu, July 21st, 2005, 09:33 AM Down to 204 this morning 29% bf. I have a long way to go , but his isn't the get to 8% within a month challenge now is it. It helps to remember that this may take a year for me to reach, but how good will it feel if by the end of this year, I can get below 180. I have been over 200 for 2 years now, I am so sick of being fat. How everyone is doing well and I still promise to get some pictures up asap.

Yup you're right. I'm 5'10".
For me this week has been going pretty good. I've been eating properly every day. I had to rechedule one of my workout days to my off day (today actually) because I had problems waking up. Tomorrow the showers are closed at the gym so I'll try to fit my workout in right after work. I dont really like doing that since its really busy at 5pm. A guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do eh?
Here are my starting pics.
jsbrook Thu, July 21st, 2005, 02:43 PM Why don't we post our progess/fat loss once per week? Overall, I'm down 6 lbs from 188.5 to 182.5 since I've started leaning out. I'll update once per week. I'm feeling like I might not hit 8% at 175 like I had originally thought. Might be closer to 170. But that's ok.

Sounds good to me...I'll update my progress Monday (7/25). I'm hoping that with the added responsibility/accountability of weighing in on Mondays will HELP keep me on track...

5' 9"
190 lbs
24% BF
i'll try and update every couple of days. talk to you guys later.

Age: 18
Height: 6'1 (73")

Belly: 40"
Neck: 17"
I want to be down under 20% by the time I move into my dorm at college (August 19), and I want to be at least at 15% by Thanksgiving Break. I don't know if that's realistic or not, but it's my goal.

Doug Miles Thu, July 21st, 2005, 09:19 PM Welcome guys. I think we have great group going here, and I see no reason why we won't all hit our goals.
I have a short term goal (and long term too I guess) to get more sleep, and begin my weight training next week. Well, off to watch a movie (speaking of not getting enough sleep, right?).

Same here! It's actually the same one. 6 hours of sleep is certainly not good enough to be working out in the morning. But I did go check out a new gym today which isn't that busy around 5pm. Well it might be as busy but they have lots more equipment then my current place. I think I'll be switching gyms and switching routines before the end of summer.
groomy Fri, July 22nd, 2005, 10:55 AM Friday night update:
Everything going along well. Cheat meal tonight was worth the wait. Pizza.... hmmmmmmmm :)
Weight: 204.6
BF: 18.3%
Coachese Fri, July 22nd, 2005, 12:06 PM I seriously cannot believe I am posting these pictures here. I am not completely happy with the progress that I have made, but I have no one to blame but myself.
Pics are Week 1/Week 2 Comparison and the other 2 are this morning.
Welcome to Adam and Ilikemyself.
jsbrook Fri, July 22nd, 2005, 02:37 PM Current Stats:

kevatl, come on in. I think pics are the best way to keep yourself accountable, especially when you post them publicly. Can't wait to see your 6 months progress.
I think I will update my first post in this challenge with a list of the current 'challengers'. Anyone else interested in joining can post at any time, and I will add you to the list.
I also like the idea of posting current stats once a week.

I still think you can hit 175 at 8%. Let's see, you're at 182 and 11%. That's 162 lbs of lean mass to about 20 lbs of fat. And, 175 at 8% is 161 lbs of lean mass and 14 lbs of fat. So, you should only need to lose less even less than 1 lb/week (while maintaining your lean mass, I know, easier said than done) to hit your mark by the end of September. Anyone feel free to check my math, it's late, so I claim no resposibility for accuracy.

I think you can do it. If you can maintain your lean mass, I think you would need to lose 8 lbs by 8/19, and than another 5 lbs by Thanksgiving. The 8 lbs is about 2 lbs per week, which is probably the max you can lose, and hope to retain your lean mass.

That's very encouraging! Math looks right to me. The 11% is an estimate. But I really don't think I'm much higher than that. At the end of my bulk, I was about 10 more lbs of muscle than my avatar and 5-6 pounds more fat. Now I've lost that fat and not any muscle. So, I think you're right. I can do it! Thanks

BlueThunder Sun, July 24th, 2005, 05:52 AM Mind if I join? I'm 5'10'' and in these pics taken today, I weigh a little under 180. Id like to get down to around 155 lbs. That should take me close to 8% bodyfat. My plan is to do fasted cardio in the mornings along with a moderate weight training program.
Brad5150 Sun, July 24th, 2005, 04:04 PM well now since im trying to gain some mass, i still have enough time to beat the 1 year deadline, i just may come into my goal at the last minute!

Yes, you should not be in this challenge. Not it the short-term at least. Go about eating at maintenance and lifting hard as discussed. You'll gain muscle and lose flab, leaning out some. When you have the muscle mass to support it, it's time to worry about 8%. :tu:

soz Tue, July 26th, 2005, 01:09 AM Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been extremely busy with personal stuff this past week and will be for the next week or two.
On a good note, I'm down to 197.4. :D

Nah-buti it's too soon to plan ahead. You may continue adding muscle with no to minimal fat gain for awhile and be happy with how you're looking and want to hold off on a specific bf %. You'll know better as you progress.
jsbrook Tue, July 26th, 2005, 05:49 PM Mind if I join? I'm 5'10'' and in these pics taken today, I weigh a little under 180. Id like to get down to around 155 lbs. That should take me close to 8% bodyfat. My plan is to do fasted cardio in the mornings along with a moderate weight training program.
Welcome! But I very much doubt that you have 25 lbs of fat to lose. Just wait and see how before setting a number.
BlueThunder Tue, July 26th, 2005, 11:36 PM Welcome! But I very much doubt that you have 25 lbs of fat to lose. Just wait and see how before setting a number.
Thanks for the welcome! About a year ago when I joined the gym I go to, one of the trainers there said I had 13% bodyfat and I weighed 157 lbs. I think maybe I have small bones or I gained a few pounds of muscle since then.

Yeah, maybe you gained muscle or the trainer was wrong. It happens too frequently. Someone posted a thread a short time ago about horrible miscaluation and measurement by trainer. But it doesn't look to me like you have 25 lbs to lose to reach 8%. But take it one day at a time, and judge by your progress.
Coachese Fri, July 29th, 2005, 07:07 PM Hey there 8% club. Hang in there and stay clean this weekend!!
groomy Fri, July 29th, 2005, 07:37 PM Hi All. Hope everyone is going well. I'm at the end of week three and I managed to put on 0.9lbs this week! Good news is my body fat has dropped. For consistency I'm going to swap to using the bf figures a gym instructor is doing for me. At least (even if the readings seem high) the same person is doing the reading. So according to their figures I was 23.7% on Friday July 1st. Redid the stats yesterday (Friday July 29th) and the reading came up 19.28%. That's a 4.4% drop while loosing only a pound in weight. I'm fairly sure at that rate that my LBM is increasing.
I'm sure this is because I've been on SGX program for the last 3 weeks. Here's a side shot for comparison between starting SGX and end of the third week (yesterday).

Cheers and have a great weekend! :tucool:
randyl Sat, July 30th, 2005, 01:35 AM Sign me up! I am 221lbs with ~24% bodyfat. Goal is to be 185lbs (or more if possible!) with 8% bodyfat.
Hoping to hit that by year end if possible, but if not, next summer will do. Heck, who cares, as long as I make it happen this time!
Gonna go sleep now so I can be up early to HIIT cardio. Let's go! :jumping:

Welcome!
It's great to see all the new faces arriving for the challenge. What's particularly good for me is that there's quite a few of us with what would appear to be very similar physiques and goal weights etc.
randyl Sat, July 30th, 2005, 10:52 AM Just had to post a breakthrough on a plateau I have been trying to work past. This morning I weighed in at 119.5lbs. Kinda cool since I have been 220 or more for the past year. Also, BF down from 24% to 22%. (Stats I posted were a couple weeks old)
Feeling great! :tucool:

Fantastic effort on breaking through the plateau! Wow - down over a 100lbs! just kidding - i realise there's typo there. Well done on your achievement. What's next?
I've been focusing too much on the weight lately so I'm not going to be too bothered if I go up, down or stay the same. Currently on SGX I know that I'm increasing muscle mass and decreasing bodyfat so stressing over my weight isn't achieving anything apart from frustration and anxiety.
Hope everyone is working hard and continuing to focus on their goals.

Um, whoops! :o Yeah, down to 219.5 lbs as of yesterday. Next short term goal is to cut down to 210 lbs. by September 1.

How many calories are you going to shoot for? I am using the 10x bodyweight rule, and I have dropped about 2lbs per week.

I was eating 2200 calories, plus a piece of fruit and lots and lots of "I can't believe it's not butter" spray. I'm gonna try to cut out the fruit and butter spray and see how that works.

Yeah, if you're not losing with your current program, time to start scaling back until you get it low enough. Right now I am on 2200 calories per day, and I am always fighting the hungries (but then I weigh 220). Have to drink lots of water to convince myself I am full...
Jack Rowe Mon, August 1st, 2005, 08:55 AM 208.2, 31 bf...I went on holiday last week and just pigged out. I look like a giant toad this morning..so bloated. Oh well time to get back on it. Pics posted this evening.
randyl Tue, August 2nd, 2005, 09:39 AM I don't want to spark off any contraversies here, but could I get some of your thoughts on fasted vs. non-fasted cardio? I have been doing fasted cardio first thing in the morning for the last several weeks and have had good success in terms of fat loss. I am aware that I risk losing muscle with this approach, but to me it seemed like a high risk/high reward proposition, justifiable so long as I closely monitored my results. Lately, however, I have been bonking my cardio, that is, my blood sugar drops and I get all shaky, and have to stop before I plan to. This morning I lasted only 15 minutes before I had to call it quits. I am probably going to scrap the fasted approach in favor of a preworkout shake (same as I do for weights, whey and oatmeal) but wanted to see if anyone here had any thoughts.

I do fasted cardio (45 minutes medium intensity) every morning and it seems to work for me. I haven't lost any muscle mass having done this.
Coachese Tue, August 2nd, 2005, 01:08 PM time to start over after a semi-disasterous weekend nutrition wise. I have however, been able to workout regularly.

If and when I manage to drag my fat butt out of bed for cardio days, it is fasted. Within 30 mins of the cardio session, I drink a PWO shake, then within 90 mins I have a big breakfast.
It works well for me (as long as I ACTUALLY DO it!!!)

I usually have a big bowl of kelloggs corn pops before I do my run. I was going to try fasted cardio, but I was hungry when I woke up. Not sure how it is for fat loss as I've only been trying to lose weight for about a week now.

Jack Rowe Wed, August 3rd, 2005, 03:34 PM Back on track, and rocking a new version of HIT. Monday morning...208.6, Wed Morning 203.4, stomach is really starting to slim down. 175 with sub 8% bf here I come.
randyl Sat, August 6th, 2005, 11:49 AM Hello out there, just got back from an awesome weight session (back/biceps). I'm holding strong at 220lbs, but bodyfat down to ~20% from what the calipers are telling me. That's a loss of 4% bodyfat in just a few weeks! From the looks of the numbers and the mirror, I am putting on a bit of muscle as well. That's cool, we'll take it. :tu:
Is everyone staying on track? It's been pretty quiet the last few days...
Jack Rowe Sat, August 6th, 2005, 12:08 PM Hey guys,

Jack Rowe Sat, August 6th, 2005, 12:12 PM By the way, anyone using ephedra? You can't get it here in Texas, if anyone has access to some and would be willing to mail it to me, I'd appreciate it. Last time I used it, the fat flew off.

Not using it, don't think I can get it. Are you using anything else, like caffeine, aspirin, or green tea, or are you holding out to get the ephedra? I thought it was totally banned?
Jack Rowe Sat, August 6th, 2005, 01:02 PM it's taken about 17 days....Overall I'm happy with that number, but I'd like to start to see more physical change, not just numbers. I'm going to bump cardio to 5 times a week and weights to 4 times. Right now I'm 203, I haven't been below 200 in over 2.5 years. I used to be a consistent 175.
Jack Rowe Sat, August 6th, 2005, 01:14 PM Before Pic.......211, 31%bf. Man I am fat as hell here. Sorry about the low quality, it was taken with my phone. Hope to have some new pics up soon.

5% loss BF in 17 days is awesome. Know what you're saying about wanting to see changes in the mirror rather than just the scale/calipers though. The mirror changes are what it's all about.
Have you been tracking measurements? Do you know where you are losing from? I lose from my waist first, still have a ton of fat to burn on my chest, butt, and legs. Still, helps to know it's coming off somewhere to keep motivated when I still look the same in the mirror.
You say you are going to increase cardio to 5x and weights to 4x. How many days/week have you been doing so far with weights/cardio to get fat loss? (whatever you are doing is definitely working if your numbers are accurate)
BlueThunder Sun, August 7th, 2005, 02:17 PM Week #2 update
Well I'm 175.5 lbs, up 1/4 of a pound from last week. Same bodyfat of 20%. Eating wise has been pretty bad this week. Only managed to stay on diet for 2 days and yesterday I ate out with friends and had lots of fried chicken and french fries. Lifting has been alright. I'm hoping to increase the weights while losing bodyfat. Managed to do all 5 of my runs last week. So basically this week was a standstill week. Hopefully I'll be moving forward this week! Hope everyone has a great day.
soz Sun, August 7th, 2005, 11:08 PM Due to some personal problems I've fallen off track these past few weeks. I'm going to take a week to mentaly prepare myself again then I'll be jumping back on track as of Monday the 15th of August.
8% BF here I come.
Jack Rowe Mon, August 8th, 2005, 12:05 PM I finally made it through a weekend without a cheat meal, and it paid off. Usually mondays I am bloated and retaining a ton of water, today I am 202.4 26%bf. This is the week I break 200 lbs, I feel it. New pics up tomorrow. Keep up the progress guys, and let's get some updates going.

Great work Jack - keep it up.
My weight is staying constant at the moment. I might make some minor adjustments to the diet at the end of this week. I'm hovering around 206-207.
It has been a bit quiet, but then again this is a long challenge.

groomy Fri, August 12th, 2005, 01:24 AM Just a quick pic taken this morning. I'm really starting to see a diff esp. in the upper ab region. You can just start to make out the seperation of my top abs. :)
I'm also noticing that I don't look as "soft" as I did before. Weight wise there's only about 2lb diff between the two photos. Currently on 206.
It may be a bit difficult from this shot, but I'd appreciate some BF% guestimates.

Wow. You're definately making progress. I can really see a difference in the area around your stomach and love handles seem to have shrunk too. I'm a complete amatuer on bodyfat estimates. In fact I just bought a bodyfat scale today to track my progress. It's 3% off of what I got from an internet site. But I think I'll just use the scale because its easier. Great work. :tu:

I'm currently at the end of the 5th week of SGX. I think that consistency is key to this (and every other program). Although my weight hasn't dropped significantly I'm leaning out quite a bit.
I'm guessing I'm around the 18-19% erring towards 19% as I hold a good layer of fat on my back :(
Thanks everyone for the comments.

Weight: 175.8 (Up .3 from last week)
Bodyfat: 18% (according to new scale/ down 2%)
Well, I am doing everything with the exercise consistently. I just have a really hard time eating right consistently. After a few days I begin to say to myself that I can't eat this way forever so what's the point. Then I cave in and have a binge for a few days. Anyway I'm gonna try really hard this week and maybe try to get up earlier in the morning so I can go to bed earlier at night since nighttime is when I usually get the hungriest.
soz Sun, August 14th, 2005, 11:06 PM Ok, time to get back on track. I fell off the wagon a bit and took a couple of steps back from my original starting point but that's nothing to be down about, these things happen.

I'm not too concerned. I'm on Swole's SGX program and the bodyfat is dropping, but scale weight is moving down oh so slowly, which is a good thing. I'm guessing that after a few more weeks the muscle growth won't be as dramatic and then the weight will drop a bit quicker.

eat clean, do what you can, but don't try and over do it. Best thing is to rest up and get better and get back into it when you are ready.

SGX is great! I still get a bit spun out with the physical weight thing. I've been hovering around the same weight for 6 weeks now, but the program is definately leaning me out! Absolutely no doubt there. I'm going to stick it out until I hit the 8-10%.
Welcome Smooth Criminal.
Smooth Criminal Fri, August 19th, 2005, 12:53 AM Alright fellas i promised a game plan and here it goes.
I'm going to break this down into 3 month segments. Sort of give you guys the Cliff notes version for now and work out the kinks and specifics in my database.
Month One will primarily be an attack on BODYFAT. I'm going to do AM CARDIO 5 days a week which will consist roughly of a 2 MILE JOG. I am going to follow MAX OT principles and train Monday through Friday also. I like the 5 day SPLIT because it allows me to devote all my attention to that specific Body PART. Mentally and Physically that has been the best course of action for me since I started lifting.
My philosophy for month one and this whole process is to train like a champion every minute i'm lifting. I think i've been guility of going through the motions before and need to acknowledge that.
MONTH ONE SPLIT
Monday - Chest
Tuesday - Biceps
Wednesday - Back - ABS
Thursday - Legs and Triceps
Friday - Shoulders - ABS
MONTH ONE DIET
M1 - 5 EGG WHITEs/1 Cup Oatmeal with blue berries and PB MIXED In
M2 - Lean MEAT/ GREEN VEG - Low fat yogurt
M3 - Turkey Sandwich on Whole Wheat with Apple/some Almonds
M4 - CHICKEN BREAST/Turkey BREAST GREEN VEG and BROWN RICE
M5 - GNC MRP SHAKE w/ FLAX OIL (Post Workout Shake)
M6 - EAS Whey Protein shake before BED
The MRP Shakes and Egg Whites are pretty much set in stone.
Some other foods I will mix in once i get some $$$$ is Turkey Bacon, Whole Wheat PITA, Tuna, and some other recipes that fit my plan. But basically the MRP Shakes, and Protein shakes are set in STONE. I might go ahead and mix in some additional creatine with my PWO shake. Also I'm going to go ahead and mix in some lean red meat one or two times a week..probably a Ribeye or Sirloin steak. Oh, and i'll have a cheat meal on Saturday night. Nothing out of control. I don't want to sabotage my goals. I'll probably have one slice of pizza for Sabarros or my local pizza joint..maybe a coke also.
There will also be a few days in SEPTEMBER where I'll probably have to break my diet...nothing like a binge..but im in the Army reserves and will be doing training..so i'll have to rely on some protein BARS.
I wanted to make sure I was getting a good balance of food. Meats, Dairy, Nuts, Veggies, bread (whole gain) I want to feed my body the best nutrients possible.
I'm going to go ahead and continue with my current program until the 22nd of AUG (upcoming Monday) and then embark on this journey.
Month 2 will be primarily a muscle gain month. I'll stop doing morning cardio and instead transition into a sprint program. Running Hills. Recruit my fast twitch muscle fiber and will allow the natural release of HGH. I'll do MAX OT but throw in an additional SET.
Month 3 - I'm going to look at my progress pictures and decide what direction I want to take.
Finally - My problem areas right now are Chest and Biceps. They seem to be the hardest areas for me to develop. The rest of my body responds very well to weight training.
:gl: guys..i'll be with you 100 percent of the way and see you at the finish line.
BTW - sometime over the weekend i'll post my exact workout routine for month 1. I'm going to use the MAX OT as a skeleton and modify to fit my style.
Smooth Criminal Sun, August 21st, 2005, 12:31 AM Played a little B BALL today..did 10 push ups after taking 10 shots...it's out of the old school Bobby Knight workout program..also did some coast to coast dribbling drills to mix in a little cardio and hand eye coordination work.
Started to implement a deep breathing meditation exercises to increase lung capacity, reduce stresss, and give me energy boosts. This stuff is really powerful and is very simple.
Next week should be pretty hectic but I'm going to make it a point to mix in my workouts and eat clean. i'lll report back to you guys a little bit later in the week to chart my progress.
soz Mon, August 22nd, 2005, 04:41 PM After one week: Monday AM weight : 200.2
I'll start posting pics after the second week.
jsbrook Tue, August 23rd, 2005, 05:23 PM Haven't really been keeping up with this thread. Hope everyone's been doing pretty well. For myself:
Current Stats:
5'7
178.5
Estimated bodyfat-somewhere in the high 9s %
I plan to maintain for a time. At least until the end of August. I might choose to loose more beginning September, but I might just maintain until the end of September when I bulk again-potentially for the last time.
Best of luck to everyone!
GONNA-C-MYABS Wed, August 24th, 2005, 10:26 PM Im in 100% on my 3 week. Finally a summer were clothing is optional :tu:

Glad you found your way in here okay. Put some starting stats up (maybe a photo if your comfortable doing that) and your away.
Cheers, Groomy
Jack Rowe Thu, August 25th, 2005, 11:37 AM Had to give a quick update...after a little set back, I am in @ 201, 25%bf......I'm having trouble getting below 200, but his is the week(i've said that for the past 2 weeks..lol)
randyl Thu, August 25th, 2005, 09:21 PM Hey Everyone,
Things have not gone smoothly for me this last week and a half, I'm afraid. First, I got hurt (much better now though), then I had my bodyfat checked by a trainer at my gym and it turns out I am down to 22.5% rather than 18% as I had thought. Apparently, there is some nuance to checking your body fat that I had not become accustomed to before reporting my extremely rapid fat loss. :o
I spent yesterday extremely frustrated, but I am calm about it now. Only thing I can do is move forward and learn from the last month. And hey, I lost 5lbs of fat, not bad even if it's not the 10lbs that I thought I had lost!
The bad patch is officially behind me, I will be lifting and doing cardio again for the first time in a week and a half starting tomorrow. :bb:

Don't fret the numbers. it's funny how knowing a number can actually change the way you look. I know in the past I have been feeling really great, thinking how good I'm starting to look. I jump on the scales and it's up a couple of pounds. Next time I look in the mirror, I'm suddenly fatter again. It's all in the mind!!!!!
Jack Rowe Fri, August 26th, 2005, 10:22 AM Today I am 199.8
For the first time in over two years I am under 200 lbs...it's working

hemburger Fri, August 26th, 2005, 05:16 PM Hello all,
I am currently between 23 - 26% bodyfat. Height: 6ft., Weight: 177 lbs.
I'm really sick of being out of shape for most of my life. I am ready to take the challenge and immerse myself in training the right way.
Earlier I used to train right with the wrong nutrition, or vice-versa and now's the time to change.
I'd be more than happy to join you.
Hemang.

Welcome Hemang. At 6ft and 177lbs I'm surprised that you are 23-26% BF. Post a photo if you can, it's a great way od keeping track of the changes.
Cheers and good luck :gl:
randyl Tue, September 6th, 2005, 12:45 AM Please welcome my new baby, Greta Giselle Lemke!
Needless to say, I haven't, uh, had time to work out the past few days. And that's NOT just an excuse!
Down to 216lbs. waist is down to 35" too!
xbrantarx Tue, September 6th, 2005, 01:01 AM Hey dough, im interested in joining this challenge also.
Im 6'.5" 172lbs 15%bf
With those figures i have 25.8lbs of fat and 146 lbs of lean mass.
I would like to be 165lbs with 12.6lbs of fat and 151.8lbs of lean mass.
So i need to loose 12.6lbs of fat and gain 5.6lbs of lean mass.
I work out 4-5 days a week, hopefully i should reach this goal, do you think?

Welcome. It's a slow moving challenge. I must update with some new photos soon.
Resilient Fri, September 9th, 2005, 03:10 PM This seems like a great challenge! I've been doing some LIIS for the past few weeks, so I think I'll join in, but I'm not quite sure what BF % I am at right now... Can anyone help me guess?
I'm 5'5" 133 lb.
hemburger Fri, September 9th, 2005, 05:20 PM Hello all,
Thanks for the welcome. I was away at a conference for a week but I am happy that I managed to workout on 4 of the 6 days I was there.
I am looking for a good bodyfat calculator. I just entered my numbers on healthcentral.com and it gave me 19% bf. However, some other sites have told me that I am at 23 - 26% bf.
Some measurements 2 weeks ago:
Waist: 36", Hips: 41", These are relaxed
Biceps: 14", Calves: 14"; forearms: 11" (Flexed on a cold body)
Frankly, I look really thin because of my height (6 ft.) and weight (177 lbs). However, I carry mass around my tummy and hips.
I don't have any pics but will try to post soon.
Hemang.
Smooth Fri, September 9th, 2005, 07:36 PM http://www.linear-software.com/online.html
Try this website guys, but I guess accuracy would depend on which method you end up using.
Just the other day I took it and got a reading of 7.87%!? using the 3 tape measurement method.
Take a look at my sig.. under my progress. Looking at my pics do you guys reckon I've broken 8%?
Cos if I have, damn I'm gonna have a good time bulking! :bb:
And resilient, I would say you're at about 15-16% bf, tho I have pretty much zero experience in guesstimating, but based on what I've learned thus far, yeah.
groomy Fri, September 9th, 2005, 09:46 PM I'm finished my 4th month now. I'm happy with the progress so far. Not sure what my bf% is.

Great work, man! I'm not good at guessing BF%, so I won't even try.
Awesome improvements all around. Keep it up! :claplow:

Am I too late to join this challange? I am a new member and just could use the extra "push". I *was* at 9% a year or so ago but wasn't able to hold it. I just returned from a month in Europe with no gym and entirely too much of the wrong food and too much wine. Anyway, I feel *very* soft and am probably at 12%-14% now. I pic taken last year when I was at my best can be found at the link in my sig. Would like to get back to that level again. This challange will help keep be on track and accountable. So guys....let's keep on each other's butts. I'm fired up!

Welcome Kenchi. The only time that's too late is after July 2006 when the challenge is due to end.
groomy Sat, October 15th, 2005, 07:58 PM Well the past couple of weeks have been not too good. I've had a few weeks vacation and I've stacked on a little weight. I'm back up to 216 at 21.3%, so I've got some work to do to drop it again.
Today I'm starting in ernest and have even entered a 12 week body transformation challenge that is featured in the Australian IronMan magazine. So I've got from today until 8th of January to reach my goal of 186. At present that's a 30 pound loss in three months. Might be a tall order, but I'm expecting a big drop initially as I'm certain I'm retaining a bit of extra water weight with all the food I've been eating.
I'll keep you posted on my progress.
Numbski Fri, October 21st, 2005, 11:04 AM I'm jumping onboard a bit late, but I figure this is a good motivator. :) It's mid-october, which means that I'll need to hustle it up! ;)
As of yesterday, I'm 5'10, 186lb, and 28.7%bf. I've been working this for over a month, and I've been as low as 14-15% in my adult life, but never down to 8! Be a good goal for me. Right now I'm just trying to get myself into a good cutting routine. Over the last 4 weeks my weight has stayed pretty much the same despite tearing it up in the gym using Max-OT, and cardio. I was even doing 2 a days for a while (fasted cardio in the am, weights in the pm), but it's jsut not happening, so now I'm monitoring my diet more closely. Hopefully I get it figured out soon! :)

Welcome Numbski,
There's not much movement in this challenge, not sure where everyone is. I'm still here and on track for the July deadline. I'm doing the 2 times a day thing at the moment and it's going great. I enjoy the fasted cardio AM and lifting PM.
If you are comfortable putting some photos up it's a great motivator. I'm also interested in seeing your build as you are the same height as me as well as currently being my goal weight.
Good luck with getting to 8%
Cheers,
Groom

randyl Mon, October 24th, 2005, 12:10 AM Howdy all, just letting you know I'm back. My wife and I had a daughter 7 weeks ago, so I guess I have been guilty of poor focus, but I haven't put on any weight! That was more my goal for when the baby was born, I knew losing would be hard, but I didn't want to back slide. So I am still around 215. I am going to be pushing hard for the next ten weeks. My short term goal is to drop 20 lbs by year end. We'll see. At any rate, it's good to be back.

Hey randyl - great to see you back! Hope Mum and new bub are doing well.
There's not been too much movement in this challenge while you've been gone. I've been lurking around. A couple of new entries recently.
Good luck with moving towards your goals.
I'll be updating stats etc next Sunday. Will be doing fortnightly updates from now on.
Cheers,

Numbski Mon, October 24th, 2005, 10:21 PM *grumble*
I'ts 9pm, and I'm still at work. I got a short period of cardio in this morning, >20 minutes, expecting to lift weights tonight. Then a client's server failed, and I'm still here fixing it!
I'm debating whether to hit the gym when I'm done here at 10 or later, or to go in the morning. I have a hockey game tomorrow night, so if I don't go tonight, I'll miss a day in my schedule. If I can get my set in tonight, then perhaps I could go for a short walk in the morning, and hit the weights tomorrow around noon or 1, and then my game tomorrow night? Hmm...
Anyhoo, weighed in this morning at 181, and if my bf meter is to be trusted at all, 28.1%.
Numbski Tue, October 25th, 2005, 02:30 AM Well, just got home around 1am, so off to the gym with me.
not. :P
Gonna get some sleep, get up tomorrow refreshed, hit the gym and do a weight set and then do my hockey game tomorrow night, and pray that I can drag myself out of the sack wednesday morning to do my fasted cardio again. ;)
Seriously. I want to fit into 33" jeans again by new years. (Wait, did I just make a new years' resolution???)
oh, btw groomy? How does one go about getting an invite at sickofbeingfat.net? I'm liking some of the tools they're making over there. I'd like to try it out! :tucool:
bklyns ant Tue, November 1st, 2005, 01:36 PM im 5'9, 150 pounds. im not fat i just have a little flab and little love- handles. i how do i get a 6 pack and lose those love handles without losing muscle?
randyl Wed, November 2nd, 2005, 12:57 PM Just a quick post on how things are going. Things are hopping with my work, so that in addition to my new baby has kept me off balance. In an attempt to get organized, a few weeks ago I hired a trainer at my gym to review my workout and diet plans. Hiring a trainer is something I have always resisted, I assumed that I was well-read enough about fitness that I would be able to figure it out for myself. But when I injured myself in the gym a few months back, it got me thinking that maybe I could use some assistance in getting myself back into shape.
So far my experience has been very positive, I have been exposed to different exercises and an approach to working out that I had not tried before. My trainer is also meeting with me about once a month to follow up and measure BF%; he also has done a complete lift analysis on the exercises that I commonly do in an attempt to correct any problems with proper form that I was unaware of. As it turns out, I have a strength imbalance that causes me to heavily favor my right side. This is a real problem for me when I do heavy lifts, particularly anything overhead, because I torque my hips and shoulder girdle to compensate. I was completely unaware of this before my trainer evaluated my lifts, and he suggested several exercises that I could do in an attempt to bring balance to the area. In time, I can return to heavy lifting, but for now, I am doing a lot of dumbell work, working one side at a time in an attempt to bring balance. It's going well.
Just wanted to offer my experience up to anyone here who might have considered a trainer to help them acheive their goals. It has been a very positive experience, and I am excited about what lies ahead. Keep in mind though, I have seen some trainers at the same gym that I would not want to work with; they are in worse shape than I am! It seems like the kind of thing that can be good if you get with the right person who knows what they are doing.
Doug Miles Tue, November 29th, 2005, 03:04 PM I haven't been around for the last few months, so I was happy to see that this challenge had a few more people interested. I have gained a whole bunch of weight, but I think there is still plenty of time to run this challenge to the end.
Today a few co-workers invited me join their 'Fat Club'. It's a 2 month challenge to lose weight. I have decided to join them as a way to jump-start myself back into this challenge. I think this is great timing to help get through the remainder of the holidays.
randyl, don't know if you still check this thread, but the trainer sounds like a very beneficial thing to do.
Anyway, just checking back in, and I plan to be posting more updates soon.
groomy Sat, February 18th, 2006, 06:38 AM This challenge has been mighty quiet for a few months.
Currently I'm sitting at 20% -
5 months to go until July.... might be tough, but I'm hoping to be down around 10% by then.
